Anheuser to Be Sold for $52 Billion (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/15/business/worldbusiness/15beer.html?ref=business)

The all-cash deal, for $70 a share, will create the world’s largest brewer, uniting the maker of Budweiser and Michelob with the producer of Stella Artois, Bass and Brahma. Together, the two companies would have sales of more than $36 billion a year, surpassing the current No. 1 brewer, SABMiller of London.

------------------------------------------------------

Now this is probably THE most important news event at the moment. I don’t even drink the shit so when I first heard the news I really didn’t pay attention. A simple observation by a casual acquaintance put it all in perspective... “A foreign company is buying Anheuser-Busch?”

Its like Belgium... Belgium? Did Belgium just step over the Pacific in one step, drop money on the table, and buy America?

Belgian beer is better than American beer anyway.. this can only improve a lackluster Budweiser product.

Check out the article. They aren’t buying product. They are buying brand. And distribution. But I suppose they are buying back their own product to some extent.

Busch Gardens and Sea World will probably be dropped as part of their $1-1.5bil cost reduction plan.

AB has been a really solid buy since the 1960's. I recently read they outpaced GE's stock growth in that time by almost 10x.

I'm going to Busch Gardens Tampa tomorrow after work just for the hell of it.

SHEIKRA FTMFW. The secret to this ride is to sit on the outside for an extra thrill I'm told... haven't had the opportunity yet. I've rode it at least it 40 times and f'n love it.

I'll enjoy the hospitality house and their security consist of sticking a stick down into your cooler/bag/luggage.... they only sell AB aluminum cans of beer for like 5 bucks a piece. I'm sneaking in a 4 pack for 4.50 this time. Blend right in.

Is it really that bad? We have free tickets and were thinking of going but I'd skip driving 4 hours if it sucks.

So, what is left as an inexpensive American beer (good ol' swill)? I can think of Linies's (sp) off the top of my head. What about PBR? I know they sold the brand but I thought it was still made here somewhere?

Haven't been there in ages. "The Big Bad Wolf" was a decent coaster, though..

Tough break on the troubles finding good swill, here in Philadelphia we have a load of awesome local microbrews, many as cheap or cheaper than the generic.

Ummm...I remember there was one summer (2004? 2005?) where PBR was outrageously expensive. Where I bartended, we were selling it for $5/can, and it consistently sold out, night after night.

No accounting for taste, I suppose.

PBR is $7 a 12-pack at some places around here. I wouldn’t bring it to a party but it works for home consumption.

Theres no cheap beer in NYC but you can find a lot more interesting beers. That's why I drink Leffe Blonde, Affigem, or Duvel Red/Blue when when I cross the Hudson.

Honestly? What’s next? Ghana walking over and buying Coca-Cola with a suitcase full of Euros (1.68 to the dollar)? Kim Jong Il dropping a few on Mickey Mouse?

With all our economic problems this disturbs me. And not just because it is beer, ladies and gentlemen... oh no. This is brand. This is brand America. Bought with cash.

I’m not worried about the quality of beer at all. American microbrew? Are you kidding? The homegrown is the best. Better than corporate piss.

Were you concerned about America buying up Mexico when AB bought 1/2 of Modelo to get Corona?

Best post in this whole thread. It's what I've been saying around here since everyone in St. Louis is freaking out about the takeover.

Also, everyone thinks their beer is going to change but why the fuck would InBev overpay a shit ton for the brand if they planned to change anything about it?

People complain about our trade deficit then bitch when a foreigner buys something American.

In the end, capital flowing into this country is a good thing.

Fact is, with the weak dollar, America is on sale, this isn't the first or last type purchase you will see.

In the end, I would be more worried if Europeans or the Oil Shieks STOPPED buying US equitities. If they want to invest their money in the US, good.

Budweis is a place in the Czech republic, er meaning one from in German... thus Budweiser means from Bedweis. The only thing they have in common is the name.
