Oddly enough everytime I see someone bring up using a runestaff I see plenty of cons but not so many people shouting they are happy to be using their runestaff. Is there anyone out there at all that believes they are better off with their runestaff than 1x/.5x weapon/shield training?

It's up to you... you can do the whole weapon/shield thing... but you will not have the extra tps to really progress your magical skills.

Personally, I believe it's worth the slight drop in DS not to have to worry about a weapon and shield that you are only using for DS. And the extra magical powers you can gain outweigh the ds loss.

My sorc and my empath, 26 and 12 respectively, both use runestaves.

I'm completely happy with the way the staves work for defense. It frees up so many TP's for other, more applicable training. Like MIU and Spell aiming and Harness power and all that.

Runestaves = good.

I'm happy with runestaves as it allows those that have no shield and being magic user to be viable for a long while too, Ì'd presume.

And for halfling, swinging as a mage is a no-no situation anyway

I'm very happy with my runestaff. My DS is just as high, I have 20 more spells, and I have 60 more mana. Hooray.

If you plot out your skills right (at least as a sorcerer..I've not worked with a mage much on it) the TPs you save by doing runestaff can be used to off-set the small loss in DS. 102 and 120 both grow with ranks in the 100's circle, both uncapped. Throw a few extra spell ranks in there, and bam, your good to go.

Also, a method that works for wizards, as well as sorcerers is to pump your extra TPs into your 400s. By level 40 I had maxed out my bonus for 425 and 430, giving a significant boost to AS, DS, and CS.

right well thats good to hear, just hadnt seen too many people praising them. I for one cant see any other option for RP purposes only... halfling wizard walks into the room sporting his trusty backsword and tower shield ......

Yes, but don't over train it in. the growing spells in 400's cap..I've noticed a lot of people getting 30-40 ranks in spirit, then doing a whole bunch of sorc and elemental..Those elementals cap, the spirits don't, think about it ;)

Personally I walk around like Gandalf. Staff in one hand, warsword in the other. :)

The tower shield in question is 1.5 time the height of the halfling by the way, roleplaying my butt ;)

Yeah, they don't cap Adredrin. But Wizards don't have access to spirit. What else are they gonna overtrain in, major elemental? Heh. And actually I was wrong. I didn't have mine capped at level 40. MnE caps at 100 ranks now, not 74.

Perfectly happy as a runestaff user.

It gets irriting training for a weapon skill you don't ever intend on swinging ever again. And if you did, it'd be so feeble that it wouldn't do damage.

I'm happy with my runestaff, at lvl 32, i use a runestaff, i hunt pookas, which are 33, and in offensive with only my spells on my DS is like 230 still, in defensive its over 300, and i dont take hits when i hunt...

all bonuses to 712 102 120 430 etc cap at level so having over 100 spirit spells for 100 elemental spells is stupid because you don't get the defense for it

In fact, if you look at spells circle avaiable to professions, the least to do the runestaff way would be the wizard (509, 506). Rest are just having boots to bolt AS as well.

Empaths? pfff, hunting with a spell that cost 6 mana per, poor em :D

I'm very happy with my staff.

Askip (at level 76), your skill bonuses and ranks are:
Skill Name | Bonus Ranks Goals Time to Goal
Armor Use..........................| 20 4 4
Physical Fitness...................| 90 20 20
Arcane Symbols.....................| 176 76 76
Magic Item Use.....................| 252 152 152
Spell Aiming.......................| 256 156 156
Harness Power......................| 176 76 76
Elemental Mana Control.............| 102 24 24
Survival...........................| 178 78 78
Perception.........................| 120 30 30
Climbing...........................| 120 30 30
Swimming...........................| 120 30 30
First Aid..........................| 178 78 78

Spell Lists
Major Elemental....................| 66 66
Minor Elemental....................| 76 76
Wizard.............................| 76 76

I wish I could be as happy with Lores. :D

P.S. The Tower is fairly easy to hunt self-spelled, and I'm in no rush to try the Aquaduct. Still, it's nice to have 30 ranks each swim and climb and still be almost 3x spell ranks plus a decent skinner.
