So I'm moving into a new apartment this weekend and my brother is selling me a nice 50 inch 1080 HDTV. Currently he has his computer hooked up to it. I hope to do the same thing, few problems\questions
1.) My video card sucks 1300 fx quadro. I would like something that will play Oblivion well and also run at high rez to take advantage of the new tv. Completely ignorant as to how this works or what I need cables, etc please any advice in that regard appreciated. the new card would ideally be in 150-200 range.
2.) Is it possible to split the screen in two? 1 half shows my digital cable and the other half allows me to search the web or play games?
3.)Moving sucks somebody snd me money
thx

All those are easily answered with a quick google. I'm too tired to fuck around and explain it right now. I'm managing a 20 room motel for weeks now with 4 more to go and it's annoying as hell. Not that I have a problem with anyones sexual preference but for fucks sake would the homosexuals stop calling my motel cell all night looking for a deal for a two hour rental.
/end rant
Even 3) is answered by searching craigslist.

As for 2, that could be a function of the tv - PIP but side by side instead of imbedded.
We definitely played Wii tennis with the NBA Finals split screen. Awesome.

so you're saying it's a function of the tv, not something a video card can do?:help:

Correct although you need a video card with some kind of output that your TV can receive. Mine happens to have a VGA output so I use it like any old monitor. I use my TV in the same way you're describing all the time with any combination of digital cable/ps3/pc. Although mines only 37" instead of 50 :(

Yeah, you just need the cable to connect the comp to the tv. Most newer TVs will have an input for an RGB cable, likewise with laptops in case you need to do a presentation.
Once connected, you just need to find the Picture-In-Picture function on your TV.

Firefold.com has really good prices on cables and converters. If you get a newer HD tv it'll have HDMI, and DVI-HDMI cables are dirt cheap, and any modern graphics card is going to have a DVI out. I'd avoid using VGA if you can (the VGA-DVI converters are cheap, usually come w/ the card, but VGA-HDMI... for some stupid reason are expensive)

To offer suggestions on a video card it really depends on what connectivity your PC has? VGA, PCI, PCIe? And yea to run TV and Game at once the TV will need a PIP (picture in picture) or PBP (picture by picture) feature which from the simple description of 50" and 1080p ... probably goin to have that just fine. Basically what your doing is running the picture function and selecting a secondary source for the other picture pretty simple process.

So you guys that use your tv. Do you just leave your cpu set up in your main room? Or do you use a laptop?

You mean AGP not VGA. Connecting to the PC is PCI (rarely), AGP, PCIe; Connecting from Card to TV/Monitor is VGA, or DVI (mainly, other cards support S-Video, HDMI, etc directly)
Skeeter; I have my computer setup in my living room with a TV hookup, but I mainly use the monitor, switching to the TV when the source/company warrants it
