View Full Version : Uphunting for loot

So I've got a level 32 half-elven rogue, and am currently living in the landing. I headed there with the intention of hunting my former favorite victims, the stone gargoyles. 7 levels over my head for the uphunting bonus, and life is grand, right? Wrong.

They changed gargoyles at some point. They were always somewhat crit resistant, but these days (swinging a veniom hilted fal) I can whack away all day at a leg and only rarely get them down. Even if I do, they take forever to kill by bleeding them out of one leg. Once they're down? No problems, but it can sometimes take 7 or 8 swings to get them there. Didn't used to be that way.

So... looking to keep uphunting, and feeling my oats a little bit, I headed out to roa-ters. The boxes were great for my lmastery ranks that I needed (and still need), and I was shocked at how much living I did out there. Probably 80% of the maneuver attacks were dodgable (assuming that's a word), and even when I got hit it wasn't usually a death crit, and once I was unstunned I could get out of there and back to town. But a few deaths in a row killed my taste for that action, especially since it inevitably lead to decays.

SO... long story short (heh)... I'm trying to find something that I can hunt successfully that's 6 or more levels above my head. In the 40-range, and I would prefer something that drops hard boxes so I can get my lmastery ranks. Something crittable, that I can nail with a 299 AS swing, would be awesome. I thought about trying shan, but that's a scary prospect. Undead won't really work because of the weighting on my fal. So... any ideas or suggestions?

I can hunt giants and titans on the glacier with zero risk (literally), and fry in under 5 minutes, head back to town, unfry, etc. There's not much excitement out there though. And by excitement I mean hard boxes, good treasure, interesting critters, etc. NOT Death (like with roa'ters). I could keep doing what I've been doing for five or six levels then give shan a try, but it's my hope that there's some critter that I'm just not familiar with that would be perfect for my situation. Thoughts?

if you have like 10+ AS ranks you can always give Sheru a shot if you have an MC ring.

Hmmm... never hunted out there. I've got the AS ranks. Maybe I'll give it a whirl if I can get a ring for the MC. Thanks for the suggestion. Anything I should know / watch out for out there?

It's been a long time since I hunted there so I don't remember the particulars. But keep in mind once you read the runes you're no longer foggable if you die.

If you're not set on sticking in the Landing. The Nations have some good stuff that's 40ish. The Bendiths and Wood Sprites are good as well as the Vourkhas and Baesrukhas. The last two are corporeal undead so they crit just fine.

Scratch that about the undead. Didn't see the part about the weighted weapon. Hehe.

Icemule has storm giants and greater and lesser ice giants that would be right around what you're looking for....

But yes, that would require you leaving the landing...

No worries on Icemule. I lived there for a LONG time the last time I played. I can honestly say I've never hunted anything in EN, but I'm open to anything I suppose. Does that Icemule Glacier area still have those ridiculously nasty avalanches?

Only if you go into the pass.. Olblins' pass maybe? But its a small area, and only happens from greater ice giants occasionally. Plus it gives you like 15 seconds to run from it if it does happen

On a related note, I've got a group of characters ranging from 40-48, and am looking to upgrade past shan. Mostly looking to take advantage of group + uphunting for phat lewt, and avoiding undead if possible. So decent treasure, around 50-55 range.

Unless they've drastically changed, especially with a group, you could play with stone sentinels. The whole key is to get them before they pop a ring in your ass. And run from the banshees.

I definitely think Sheru beyond the runes in the MC are the best for you. They are ridiculously soft skinned if you're an ambusher, from what I remember. They swarm, which can be a bit of a problem, but if you keep your head about you and you know what you're doing, no problem.

First hunt through sheru unscathed, a couple rubies, and one box (1500 coins and a lapis lazuli). But it was a nice change of pace. Certainly something to mix in with gargoyles and roa'ters depending on my mood. Thanks all for the tip.

(Ice giants ftl - maybe in a train or three... got my ass handed to me)

They swing pretty hard and use spirit strike occasionally. A few manuevers as well

Just watch out of the harbs in sheru and the occasional nightmare steed if you don't like undead.

The maneuvers didn't bother me, but their defense is just too strong for me to get any kind of reliable crit when ambushing. 259 or something like that, and I swing at 299. Just too dangerous. And I missed one, who promptly stuck his massive icicle right into my throat. Charming bunch, really...

And I saw on Tsoran's map that Harbingers and Steeds hang out there occasionally. Set them up in my highlight list as bright blue and red. As soon as I see them, I'm outta there. :medieval:
