I'm REALLY careful about not getting sunburnt, I know from growing up that I didn't like it, and I've never found deeply tanned skin that attractive or important to me anyway. Soooo... Sunday I put in a garden rock wall, basically took all day. I spent the majority of it with a t-shirt and short on, but towards the end, the sun was very overcast and not "bright" or "hot" at all. You can see where this is going.

I took off my shirt and finished up in a couple of hours. The long story short is, My ENTIRE back, from my hairline on the back of my neck down to the crack of my ass (yes, I my baggy shorts had sagged) is so red, lobster red doesnt' give it justice.

I've taken off THREE days of work it hurts so much. I haven't really eaten, will occasionally take a cold shower which hurts like hell, I take ambien each night so I can get like 4 hours of sleep before the pain wakes me up again.

Is there no cure but time, realistically? I've never had a burn this freaking bad before. So far, just two blisters, and small ones... but damn it hurts. Just WALKING hurts -- anything that causes the skin to move.

if it's bad enough to blister, i might go see a dermatologist. that's brutal. sorry to hear that.

Ouch... yeah I hate the sun... I'm a white irish ginger without red hair. I've gotten sunburned (blister sunburned) in november at a football game.

Best advice is lots of aloe, and drink lots of water (stay away from booze... it sucks but you don't want to dehydrate), pain medicine never really worked to help me relieve it.

<<if it's bad enough to blister, i might go see a dermatologist.>>

If you're a pussy, sure. I had a sunburn on my neck so bad that my skin didn't peel off, it literally melted. I'd rub my hand on it and have a bunch of liquid skin fall off.

Black people get burnt don't they? I thought they just had a lot more pigment, so it was harder for it to happen.

There's some blue spray, the name escapes me at the moment, but it's aloe with lydocain. It's the best stuff I've ever found.

Edit: And it's already been linked.

Go to the dr, get some prednisone & if it's bad enough sylvadine. Especially if it's still that painful after 3 days.

Do not use that fake aloe, the stuff that looks neon green. That will just trap in the heat and cause you to blister like a mother fucker.

Since you already waited three days, the worst is almost over. Get ready for the nastiest peeling you have ever seen.

Keep drinking water. Loads of it. That sick feeling is partly due to dehydration. Those cooling lotions you hear about do not work. I know. I've been exactly where you are. Pain meds, rest and water. Regular lotion will help with that healing itch when it starts to calm down. Someone told me to mist the my back with cool water. Don't do this, it dries you out faster.

I've only gotten sunburned once in my life. I was in Florida. Things happen there. Butt things.

Anyway, I used this neon green broken-glow-stick concoction you speak of. I applied it topically with much emphasis. I resembled the Incredible Hulk.

To make a long story short, 3 days passed, and I was sitting on the train -- and my skin started to feel a bit... Different. And, I turned apple green again. Because, apparently, it has to incubate for 72 hours before your epidermis vomits it back up.

It was pretty awesome, but people were staring. I think God laughed. The children definitely cried.

Two weeks at summer camp without any sun block the entire time showed me that brown skinned individuals will burn given the right circumstances.

My nose looked like it had been through fillet hell and back by the time I got home, and the pain wasn't anything to mess with. Haven't burned since, but I remember being fairly surprised at the time.

I am white but have burned probably two or three times in my life. If I get a burn, it is usually the first time I get a lot of sun that summer and once I get that out of the way, I'm good for the rest of the year.

Last year I got a bit of a burn (just red and sensitive, no peeling) during a whiffle ball tournament. Our "uniform" consisted of wife beaters with obnoxious sayings written on them and I had some sweet tan lines for the next few months.

I can't believe you haven't started itching yet. That will be FAR worse than the pain. Ask for this stuff http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_sulfadiazine I burnt myself horribly on my honeymoon, and this was the only stuff that made me not want to take a header off the top deck due to the itching.

Sulfonamides are pretty much just antibiotics (and I think anti-fungal too), but they are great for burns. I've never had to use it on a sunburn, but I've had some pretty bad heat burns before (shit happens in kitchens) and it does wonders for keeping out infections.

Just got back from the doctor, they gave me silver sulfadiazine like mentioned above. Said it was mostly to keep from infection. I have 1st and 2nd degree burns on my whole back, she actually told me not to go to work for another two days (I laughed inside). I've never really been burned before, not like this. Never even felt it when i was working outside, it was so breezy and cool -- I guess that's why it snuck up on me.

The worst burn of my life was on a cool, overcast day. Granted, it was a day we spent on the water but I just wasn't expecting reflected light to do such a number on me.

I got a blistered sunburn one time while on vacation.. my brother got one too, but his popped. He ended up having to get a tetanus shot, I just wasn't able to go out in the sun for the rest of the vacation :(

I'm pretty religious about sunscreen now, I don't leave my house without any on.

The worst burn of my life was on the back of my legs. Was a landscaper during high school and college. Was shoveling on a hot day wearing shorts felt fine when I went to sleep. Next morning I rolled out of bed and my legs didnt work so fell flat on my face. Spent the entire day vomiting and shaking with a 100+ fever. Went to the emergency room when my parents got home. Got put on some kind of drug I dont even remember and told to quit my job.(was back to work in a week)

Oh im fair skinned irish by the way. So your results may vary.

That had to suck ass. Back of the knees burnt to shit so you were walking around like you lost your shins in the war, fuck that.

My worst was passing out drunk on Myrtle Beach, my buddy came by woke me up so I rolled over onto my face. Woke up 4 hours later with my back purple and covered in blisters the size of jelly beans. Hurt like a bitch so I got back to the hotel and drank til it was numb, passed out on the bed only to be woken up by my buddy screwing some chick on the bed because he didn't realize 1) I was back 2) He was on the wrong bed (or he did realize it and was trying to soil my sheets the fucker).

A friend of mine was given a bundle of visits to the tanner as a present & was trying to not spend extra $ by buying the expensive tanning oils...she decided to try baby oil instead.

Keeping in mind she's lily white to begin with...and she went in for 25 minutes first visit :ohshit: She wound up running a high fever, blistered, unable to work for 3 days and eventually at the E.R. where they admitted her for 24 hour observation & a round of IV therapy for dehydration.

Considering she'd only missed 1 day of work in 12 years, it scared the hell out of me to see her looking like a radiation victim & in the hospital.

Go to home depot and buy a pot of aloe vera. Slice a stem in half and have someone rub it all over your back. When the soft material gets dry.. just run a fork over it to get the moisture out of the stem. Make sure the skin of the stem is gone, or not touching your skin because that would hurt. Once it's used up.. let the aloe vera juice dry on your back. Don't wipe it off. Once your back is dry, wet a beach towel with cool water, lay it flat on your back, then lay on your bed. Use the rest of the plant for the next few days.

That's wierd. A salon attendant usually does not let anybody stay for 25 minutes for their first time, and especially with lily white skin, or at least they warn the customer not to do so. Although the oil contributed to it, (lack of spf protection) she also has little melanin in her skin to protect her.. someone with her skin tone should not be under the sun for very long, least of all a tanning bed.

At least when you get burned at home, you can stay in. Yeah, getting burned on vacation sucks the big one. =\ I was an utter fool and remained mostly sunscreen-free for an entire week spent between Key West and Puerto Rico. Much of that was spent in/on the water. I couldn't wear a bra for a week afterwards because the strap went across a lower area than my two piece. I had the tan lines from that escapade for a year afterwards.

I'm not even reading anyone elses' posts because none of them will be right. (Unless they live in Arizona like me).

Go to the grocery store, buy Lubriderm unscented. Buy or (if it grows near you) aloe. Peel the skin off the aloe and put the gelly part in the blender with the Lubriderm. Blend it and put it right on your skin. It will smell really bad, it will also look like someone farmer blew their nose out on you. Deal with it.

You can also juice the aloe first (that gets rid of the chunkies). And then add it to the Lubriderm.

I know this will sound gross but you can spray a diluted solution of white vinegar or water on your back and that will take the sting out. I'd do that FIRST, and then put my nasty snot-lotion on.

I had the same thing Bob describes to my whole body. I fell asleep on a pool raft, and even rolled over when I thought I had achieved a nice tan on my front side (which was really just a bad burn I couldn't feel yet). I missed work, my whole body blistered and I was dry heaving. I should have gone to the hospital.

My mother always made that snot lotion since I was a kid and it works great, however disgusting it looks/smells. It should fix you up in a day or so.

Good luck.

Was hiking Mauna Loa on the big island a few months ago. Left the sun block at the first camping spot, didnt realize it until it was too late.

13,000 feet elevation + being in hawaii + hiking on snow for 3 days - sun block = teh ag0ny.

I tried my best to cover up, wore a bandana around my head, a second bandana around my face, hoodie up. Shit, man. It was no good.

When I got back to the first camp, my face was ragged. I looked like a 75 year old man for about a week. Face felt like and look like plastic, hurt like a bitch when I opened my mouth, skin had a grayish hue. It was bad. Scared children into hysterical tears bad.

Luckily, it healed, and I am back to my gorgeous self.........but I can only imagine the long term effects.
