View Full Version : New York: 1 in 4 people have herpes (genital)
NEW YORK (AP) - A city Health Department study finds that more than a fourth of adult New Yorkers (http://search.breitbart.com/q?s=New%20Yorkers&sid=breitbart.com) are infected with the virus that causes genital herpes.
The study, released Monday, says about 26 percent of New York City adults have genital herpes, compared to about 19 percent nationwide.
The department says genital herpes can double a person's risk for contracting HIV.
Herpes can cause painful sores, but most people have no recognizable symptoms.
Among New Yorkers, the herpes rate is higher among women, black people and gay men.
The health department urges consistent use of condoms, and says its STD clinics offer free, confidential herpes testing.

So if you're a black woman, or a black gay man in NYC, you're fucked, heh.

I think part of the problem too is that condoms don't really stop the spread of herpes since it's contact based, not fluid based. There's no great way to prevent getting it if you sleep with someone who has it.

I think that rate is lower than the nationwide rate.

although wearing a condom doesn't necessarily protect against herpes, especially if there are open sores.
abstinence, etc. etc. or just sleep with a partner you can trust and who has been tested.
no one wants to deal with that shit, and I hope I never have to.
edit: people type faster than i do, but yeah, what everyone else said.

Related to this picture but not to the thread, the Valtrex commercials always really freak me out. Plus I wonder how much they have to pay the models to become visually associated with herpes, and HERPES SUPPRESSION!

Seriously. Maybe they find people who really do have herpes? Because I know that I wouldn't star in one of those no matter fucking what, even though i'm not still out there and dating. I don't want my face associated with herpes, heh.

My theory is that people are so preoccupied by AIDS, that anything else is "eh, no big deal".
It's also astonishing to me that people have no clue about herpies. Growing up we didn't have AIDS to worry about (not initially anyway), just genital herpes. So we knew that once you had it, you always had it. To see these stupid herpies medicine commercials and hear "I didn't know" floors me. How can you not know how a condition you have works?!

I call bullshit on not knowing what herpes is. Maybe they didn't know their partner had it because their partner never had any symptoms (that's how one of my girlfriends got it from her ex of like 3 years - he never had symptoms and he didn't even know he had it until hers showed up). But not knowing what it is at all? C'mon man.

You can be a carrier for years before it shows, right? I thought viruses were like that...

yeah, i never understood that either, but it's surprising still to me how little sex education there is in schools.
but I agree...most people just figure that as long as they don't have AIDS, they're good. i don't know about you guys, but I don't want open sores on my junk. That sounds incredibly painful.

you can never show symptoms at all. hence, if you are sexually active, get tested every 6 months.

Oh sure, but in those commercials it's referencing someone who has it and they didn't know that they can still spread it and not show symptoms. That really baffles me to not have known that. You'd think that with the treatments they would have been told that.
Herpes is herpes is herpes, whether it be genital or cold sores. They really need to start telling people that you can spread that shit from cold sores as well.

It doesn't matter. She's right-- if someone with oral herpes slobs your nob, you have the same risk of getting genital herpes as if you had just had sex with a girl with genital herpes.
sigh...different strains...Does it really matter what strain you're spreading in the long run?
Yes, there are different types of herpes. Oral sores can be spread the same as genital herpes, which is through direct contact. If you have a outbreak either oral or genital you should avoid sexual activity. Although, herpes can be spread even without evidence of a breakout as is evidenced by this study.
My point is fairly clear; Oral herpes can be spread to the genitalia.

i'm pretty sure the chances of contraction are different with different strains. at least that's what i remember, but i'm not running any searches on herpes contraction from my office computer.

Nope. Your chances are only affected by if the person is having an outbreak or not-- i.e. open sores are worse than no physical signs.. As well as your own immune system strength.
Other than that, the difference in each strain is just a "technicality". For all intents and purposes, they're "interchangeable" and you can't really address one without the other.
What about shingles? What if you accidentally rub your penis/vagina on them?
I hear shingles is extremely painful. I think you'd just be torturing the poor soul if you did something like that. Not to mention, that'd be pretty fucking gross.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong, but you should defintely do your own research so as to explore all the related facts.

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). Most genital herpes is caused by HSV-2.
HSV-1 and HSV-2 can be found in and released from the sores that the viruses cause, but they also are released between outbreaks from skin that does not appear to have a sore. Generally, a person can only get HSV-2 infection during sexual contact with someone who has a genital HSV-2 infection. Transmission can occur from an infected partner who does not have a visible sore and may not know that he or she is infected.
HSV-1 can cause genital herpes, but it more commonly causes infections of the mouth and lips, so-called “fever blisters.” HSV-1 infection of the genitals can be caused by oral-genital or genital-genital contact with a person who has HSV-1 infection. Genital HSV-1 outbreaks recur less regularly than genital HSV-2 outbreaks.

and about shingles...
Shingles, also called herpes zoster or zoster, is a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV). VZV is the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays in the body. Usually the virus does not cause any problems; however, the virus can reappear years later, causing shingles. Herpes zoster is not caused by the same virus that causes genital herpes, a sexually transmitted disease.

This suddenly came to mind:
A festering herpes sore attacks you!
AS: +425 vs DS: +442 with AvD: +43 + d100 roll: +92 = +118
... and hits for 10 points of damage!
Case of herpes in your eye!
Better go see your doctor.

As indicated by [url=http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?t=21127&highlight=herpes]this thread[\url], I've run the whole herpes scare thing. Never shown any symptoms, and tested negative the one time I went (dodged that fucking bullet).
The girlfriend who called me was an ex, and she was just calling to inform me she had it, and didn't know when she got it, so just to let me know. Perhaps she got it after me, who knows.
