I have a coyote that when waved, casts sounds. It's non-metallic and non-crumbly. I'd have reasonable doubt to that claim that metallic is safe.

You should be able to tell by bardsong if it's non-crumbly, right? Or is that only if it's currently blank?

No one can detect if an item is crumbly. Requests to fix this problem have been made numerous times.
