AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson has been charged with drunken driving after being arrested for the second time in just more than a month.

Authorities said Benson was arrested early Saturday in downtown Austin after he failed a field sobriety test. The former Texas star was charged with driving while intoxicated and was released on bond.

The arrest comes a month after Benson was charged with boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest. He has said that neither charge is true, and the cases are pending.

Austin police spokeswoman Veneza Aguinaga said Benson, who was pulled over for running a red light, refused to take a breath test or provide blood samples Saturday.

A message left with an answering service for Benson's attorney was not immediately returned. A Bears representative was not immediately available for comment.

Benson was a first-round pick in 2005 and started 11 games last season. Three weeks ago, he took part in voluntary spring workouts in Illinois, lining up in the Bears first-team backfield.

He has a June 30 court date for the May 5 arrest while operating a 30-foot boat on Lake Travis near Austin. Authorities say he resisted arrest and had to use pepper spray to subdue him; Benson has denied he resisted and says officers used excessive force.

In 2003, Benson was sentenced to eight days in jail on a misdemeanor trespassing charge after forcing his way into an apartment to look for a reported stolen TV.

The Bears took Benson with the fourth pick in the 2005 draft after he rushed for more than 5,500 yards and 64 touchdowns at the University of Texas. But instead of developing into a star, the 25-year-old has been plagued by injuries and alienated teammates with blunt comments.

In three years with the Bears, Benson has rushed for 1,593 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 3.8 yards a carry. He's also missed 13 games. And the Bears made it clear their patience was wearing thin by drafting Tulane running back Matt Forte in the second round of April's NFL draft.

I wonder if Matt Forte is ready to step in as a rookie?

I hope so. the bears badly need a running game.....not to mention a passing game, and a QB blocking game

I refuse to draft him this year. Always a disappointment.

Bears fans are ready, willing, and open to embracing Matt Forte and seeing what he brings to the table, but he's going to have to actually earn his spot. Something Benson had handed to him.

Benson doesn't have his priorities in order outside of football. It's not hard at all to stay out of trouble with the law when you're in the kind of position he's in. Hopefully he gets his shit together before the start of the season.

The Chicago Bears have cut ties with troubled Cedric Benson, waiving the starting running back after a second alcohol-related arrest in five weeks.

"Cedric displayed a pattern of behavior we will not tolerate," Bears GM Jerry Angelo said in a news release. "As I said this past weekend, you have to protect your job. Everyone in this organization is held accountable for their actions. When individual priorities overshadow team goals, we suffer the consequences as a team. Those who fail to understand the importance of 'team' will not play for the Chicago Bears."

Benson, the No. 4 overall pick in 2005, showed up for work Monday morning at Halas Hall and was told to go home by coach Lovie Smith.

The news comes after Benson was arrested for DUI in Austin, Texas, Saturday morning. He was arrested for boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest in May.

"I apologize for making the poor decision to drink and drive during the early morning of Saturday, June 7th," Benson said in a statement through Atlanta-based attorney David Cornwell. "Given the incident last month, it was a particularly bad decision. I have no excuse for this lack of judgment.

"Though I strongly believe that I am not guilty of any crime, I realize that the public and the Bears organization hold me to higher standard. Though my local attorneys will continue to work hard to prove my innocence, I confess to using poor judgment. Please accept my deepest apology."

Even before his latest incident with the law, there has been speculation that second-round draft pick Matt Forte would take over as the Bears' starting running back this season, as Benson has had a so-far disappointing career in Chicago.

drinking and driving can be a poor decision, but still legal if it's under .08

So he could actually think he's innocent but still have made a shitty decision

I bet the Bears are glad they finally found a way to get rid of this guy. It's not like they could have cut him from their roster three years after they made him the #4 overall pick, but now they can use all the d-dubs he's been getting to toss him out.

Ya that.

They cut the wrong RB after the losing the superbowl. Benson ran like a fourth round rookie (irony) and had no business having the top RB honors.
