We'll get it corrected soon. In the meantime, here's your answer:
The website says:
Shield Penalty: Using a shield hinders attempts to Dodge. The penalty is 20% for a small shield, 30% for a medium shield, 40% for a large shield, and 50% for a tower shield.
Bzz, wrong, website. As Emeradan said, the intervals have changed from 10% per shield size to 8%. Also not mentioned is the +/- 5 DS modifier which is applied BEFORE the stance multiplier. So in your example from post 3864, you have a evasion base of (0 + 36 + 17/4) = 40, which is correct. The shield penalty for large shields is 38%, so take 38% away from 40 and you get 24 after truncating the decimal. Now take away another 5 points for a large shield to leave 19, and finally multiply by your stance factor of 0.75 to leave us with 14 DS for evasion.
Now blocking.
The website says:
Shield Defense Strength (DS) bonus: (Shield Ranks + (STR bonus/4) + (DEX Bonus/4))/(1.5) = Base Value
So close, but get that 1.5 out of there. That doesn't come until later. The base value is just Shield Ranks + (STRbonus/4) + (DEXbonus/4).
In your example again, your blocking base starts at (4 + 22/4 + 24/4) = 15. Truncate at each division step. Now since it was a melee attack, multiply that by 115% for a large shield to get 17. (For melee, the modifier for small/medium/large/tower is 85/100/115/130%; for ranged, it's 120/150/180/210%.) Multiply 17 by 0.50 for offensive stance and get 8, and NOW divide by 1.5 to get a grand total of 5 DS for blocking.
14 for evasion + 5 for blocking + 40 for the shield = 59 total DS
And keep in mind this all ignores armor (you didn't have any), injuries, health or spirit deficiencies, height differences, multi opponents, status effects, room effects, and all the other forgettable little incidentals that make DS calculations such a headache. But correct documentation would help, so... yeah.
