I'm driving 1600 miles from CA to Austin, Texas tomorrow morning at 7 AM. I'm helping a friend move from here to there and he didn't want to drive alone.
Suggestions on what to do there? I fly back the 9th.
Jamus lives in Austin I think. If you're into that 'scene'.
Plenty of things to do in Austin.
Lake Travis - water, boats, babes, etc.
6th street at night
Go to San Antonion (less than 1 hour's drive) and go to Fiesta Texas (amusement/theme park) or Sea World.

I haven't spent much time in Austin. If you're going to take Gan's advice and drive to San Antonio, the Riverwalk is a hopping area. You can also take in the Alamo, which is right off of the Riverwalk.
Definately hit the River Walk in San Antonio at night. Great food and music... take a tour boat around too.
The Alamo is a cool place to go if you've never been. Great history about a great state.

Go to a show! Austin has a fucking badass music scene that exists beyond SXSW ;). Check out the Chronicle (http://www.austinchronicle.com/) for a listing of shows. The Chronicle will probably have some ideas for some other cool stuff to do as well. I like to check out the Alternative/Independent papers of a city to get a feel for what kind of stuff the people that live there like to do.

I've got two friends living there already and they have some stuff lined up for us but I just wanted to get a feel for what others have done.
Appreciate the suggestions.
Just moved away from Austin. Go eat at Kirby Lane and/or Magnolia Cafe. And Chuy's. Go see a movie or show at The Alamo Drafthouse (movies + beer + big screen = awesome).

oh, I've been the drafthouse already the last time I was in Austin for Austin City Limits.
It makes me happy in the pants.
 Austin City Limits.
I watched Nora Jones play there.
I'm putty in her hands.

I've seen her in concert too (not in TX though). Her voice is ridiculously hypnotic .
