LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A Missouri mother was indicted Thursday in the case of a teen who killed herself after being taunted on the social networking site MySpace.com.

Megan Meier, 13, hanged herself in her bedroom after being targeted in a MySpace hoax. 1 of 2 A federal indictment accuses Lori Drew, 49, of O'Fallon, Missouri, of using a MySpace account to pose as a 16-year-old boy and feign romantic interest in the girl. The girl, Megan Meier, committed suicide after her online love interest spurned her, according to prosecutors, telling her the world would be a better place without her. Drew faces up to 20 years in prison on charges of conspiracy and accessing protected computers to obtain information to inflict emotional distress.

The indictment, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, accuses Drew and others of registering on MySpace as "Josh Evans" and using the account to start an online romance with Meier. Authorities have previously said that Drew set up the account to find out what Meier, who lived in her neighborhood, was saying about her daughter. Prosecutors allege that Drew and the others violated MySpace's terms of service by using false information to create the account so they could "harass, abuse or harm" Meier, according to the indictment.

The two corresponded for about four weeks before "Josh" broke off the relationship, authorities said. Within an hour, Meier hanged herself in her room and died the next day. After Drew learned of the teen's suicide, the indictment alleges, she directed one of the teens involved to "keep her mouth shut" and deleted the account. Meier's mother, Tina Meier, told CNN in November that her daughter had self-esteem issues and had struggled with depression since childhood.

She said when her daughter began receiving messages from "Josh" telling her she was pretty, she was thrilled. When "Josh" broke off the relationship, Tina Meier said, her daughter was devastated. "She was looking for me to help calm herself down like I always did and be there for her. And I was upset because I didn't like the language she was using, and I was angry she didn't sign off when I told her to," Tina Meier told CNN. "She said to me, 'You're supposed to be my mom, you're supposed to be on my side,' and then took off running upstairs," Tina Meier said. Tina Meier found her daughter hanging by a belt shortly afterward.

"It's as if my daughter killed herself with a gun," Meier's father, Ron, told CNN. "And it's as if they loaded the gun for her." Drew is scheduled for arraignment in June. "This adult woman allegedly used the Internet to target a young teenage girl, with horrendous ramifications," U.S. Attorney Thomas P. O'Brien said in a written statement. "Any adult who uses the Internet or a social gathering Web site to bully or harass another person, particularly a young teenage girl, needs to realize that their actions can have serious consequences," O'Brien said. In December, Missouri prosecutors declined to file charges against Drew, saying there was no law under which she could be charged.

"There is no way that anybody could know that talking to someone or saying that you're mean to your friends on the Internet would create a substantial risk," St. Charles County Prosecutor Jack Banas said. "Under the law, we just couldn't show that.

I figured she would just get away with it

She probably will still get away with it, heh. But yeah, i'd like to see her put in jail too. I can understand kids being kids (idiots), but a 49 year old woman? Come on, that's not right. She should've known better.

Guilty/Innocent either way she will be in the poor house and the entire country will know word for word what happened and what she looks like. Either way her life is gonna be ruined.

I hope the conclusion to this story won't leave me... hanging?

Sorry, I heard the voice of Dr. Evil in my head saying that line.

Oh no, not the Megan Meier crap again.

This happened less than 5 miles from where I live. I used to pass their subdivision on my way to my previous place of work.

Long story short, its a tragedy that the girl took her own life, but all the adults who are involved in the case are fucking garbage. The key issue in the case is:

I am not blaming her parents for her suicide, but I don't think its a stretch to say they had much more influence on her than a stranger on the internet should have. If you know your kid is fucked in the head, maybe you shouldn't let them start romances on MySpace 24/7.

I wouldn't be so harsh on them, but with as many appearances as they have made on TV, they have lost most of my sympathy.

After being put on hold for almost a year being told there was nothing to be done, I imagine they went as far as they could to try & get some justice for their daughter(publicity wise)? I'm not saying they aren't at fault also but come the fuck on, a grown woman messing with a kids head that she KNEW had problems..she deserves all the grief she gets imo.

I did NOT say she was innocent or free from blame, but she didn't break any laws.

Also, they did not wait a year to get on TV. They've been milking this for all its worth since they found out about the fame MySpace account.

Yeah she didn't break any laws, it doesn't make what she did morally right or even decent. She deserves a brick to the face & public humiliation into the next century & I can't blame the parents for making sure she gets it(as much as they can dish out).

All I'm saying is that this could have easily have happened if the boy was real and broke it off with her. I don't think she could have known that her actions would lead to the girl's suicide.

Yes because all parents know about every detail and every love interest in their child's life.

Eh, maybe the parents felt that having friends online would help. Maybe they didn't realize some douchebag 40+ year old woman was going to throw a monkey wrench into the idea. Sure a real boy could have been as damaging, but it's even more insulting when someone goes out of their way to purposely lie and hurt another child.

I don't think she could have known that her actions would lead to the girl's suicide. It could have, but it didn't. It was an adult manipulating a child with tragic consequences and she deserves to be punished for it. She may not have known what could have happened, but she should have known better.
