View Full Version : Stephen King: 'Join the Army if u r dum"
Parkbandit

"I don't want to sound like an ad, a public service ad on TV, but the fact is if you can read, you can walk into a job later on," said King. "If you don't, then you've got, the army, Iraq, I don't know, something like that. It's not as bright. So, that's my little commercial for that."
Sounds like he's been hanging out with John Kerry lately.

So a has-been author is speaking out on a topic which he has no business speaking on to begin with, and you feel this warrants a post on the forums? He's just trying to drum up some controversy so his next book actually makes money.

I don't agree with Stephen King, hell I don't even like his books/movies. But this is a pretty stupid argument against him voicing his opinion. For example you post here on topics like sports but to the best of my knowledge you aren't a professional affiliated with baseball, football, or basketball organizations so who are you to speak or post on things like who should win the MVP or who has a better playoff team? You're just some guy on a forum.. Just like Stephen King is just some guy with an opinion, even if it's a stupid one.

The difference is, I'm not simply voicing my ignorance and negative disposition towards the people who risk their lives for my freedom, or oil, or whatever you may think they're fighting for.
I voice my opinions in a rarely negative manner towards professionals who have been judged on a similar basis for the last fifty years, using well known, and utilized criteria. It astounds me that someone in Stephen King's position would try to BEGIN judging the very forces that maintain his basic rights as an American, which includes his very career.

To be honest, that's likely very true. I'd much rather teach many people to accel to greatness, rather than simply be great, myself.
BTW: Did I ever say he didn't make money? I said he's simply drumming up controversy so his next project does.
We can all safely admit his best days as a literary icon are behind him, so quit letting your bias satisfy his ego? The man has absolutely no grounds to even begin judging anyone willing to put their own life on the line to protect pricks like him.

I believe anyone has the right to 'judge'..unless you live somewhere other than the U.S. With as much money as SK has I truly don't imagine he 'needs' publicity for his next project. What an idiot.

He doesn't need publicity, his publisher does... Start thinking, eh?
Yea negative insinuations about the armed forces (from that snippet I don't know what the context was) is a surefire way to get positive publicity and make people want to buy your stuff...

As someone who just got out of the book retail industry a few months ago(10yrs at 2 different companies), I can safely say that Stephen King still makes of money on each new project, hits the bestseller lists for months straight, is still a sought after speaker/guest editor/writer, and is far from a has-been.
In fact, his last few books sold better than average as the word of his 'retirement' grew and of course that accident that almost killed him.

Don't try to backpedal and say that's not what you meant ;)While it's typical PB&JT silliness to call Stephen King a has-been (obviously he's one of the most talented writers of his generation), but King does still benefit from publicity. That's why he DOES interviews and the like. That he might say something controversial to give him a shot of attention really isn't beyond the realm of belief.
That being said- if military service attracts the dumbest members of our society, why is it touted as an asset for Presidential candidates? Why are those that enlist in the armed services stupid? Is it because they voluntarily risk their lives? Sometimes people call that "heroic" like when they refer to stupid police officers or firefighters.

I'm not quite sure how my posting something humorous which I know you cannot read is taken as a signal that I am seeking your attention.
If I were in need of attention I would:
(1) Ignore a poster, then (2) tell everyone I ignored them, then (3) attempt to malign the character of said poster, then (4) remind everyone I ignored them, then (5) respond to that poster's posts but never without a reminder to everyone that I ignored them.

Here's the actual video. I think it was just an off the cuff comment. Hardly deserving of being painted a villain: Video: http://www.breitbart.tv/html/90023.html
There have been uneducated soldiers in the past. The thinking perhaps being that cannon fodder doesn't need to think. But military entrance isn't the cakewalk it used to be and illiteracy is hardly welcomed or encouraged now. I think King is just coming from a mindset that was more common years ago. It was poorly done on his part but I don't believe malicious.
That said, I really thought King's last couple of books sucked eggs. He's not written anything since his accident that I enjoyed. Guess irreversible brain damage doesn't help a writer.

IMO it was a dumb thing to say. I've known two guys who died in Iraq, one marine, one armed forces. I know three guys in Iraq. I know one who is back. The original admin of this forum was in Iraq, and he's one of the smartest programming guys I ever met. He has a mind for patterns that will make your head spin. So no, I don't believe any one of them is incapable of reading or below par intelligence. WTF.

Illiterate or more accurately under-educated people are not stupid. They just don't have the formal education and advanced reading skills to make it into more "demanded" jobs.
My brother never made it past the 8th grade -- but he's a very bright guy. He just had shitty parents.
