I've never heard irons used like that before. What's it mean?

It means the pistons of a car, with a hydrocarbon combustion engine, getting all started and firing up -- And then it's used as a sports analogy/expression, akin to:

Like, "Let's get that iron firing!"

Or, "Get those iron pistons pumping."

Maybe even like, "According to quantum tunneling theory, the universe will reduce itself into inert iron and only quantum pulsing will cause shifts in physical matter."

You have to understand The British nomenclature. I mean they did, after all, invent iron. Not to mention gravity.

Irons is short for Thames Ironworks, which was the name of West Ham United football club before they became affiliated to the football league.
