I'm thinking about getting back into competive league rifle shooting.

I am torn between choice of weapon.

M1 Garand
M1A
AR-15 (not even being considered really)

But I'm tossed up between the Garand or the M1A.

It will be iron sight competitions up to 600 yards. I'm leaning towards picking up a M1A for this league but I have man crush on the Garand not to mention I already have one and some parts lying around for it.

The Garand will take some money being put into it to bring it up to match specs as it was a service rifle and I basically just use it for fucking around.

One is obviously heavier than the other and they fire two different rounds. m1a is .308 basically.. 7.62x51 where as the Garand is .30-06 7.62x63 (mine is.. there are some .308 versions out there)

and fuck the AR-15 for this league.. I wish they still had a vintage only league but liability and shit fucked that all up.

If anyone else is interested in the Bay area in getting involved in some of these leagues lemme know. They have tactical shotty and pistol leagues as well the high power rifle leagues.

Then again maybe I should stick to bowling... tho you end up spending about the same fucking money anyways.

:(

If you lived closer I'd take you up on the offer.

 rifle leagues

As soon as my son gets a little older I'm going to start him up on learning how to shoot.

Are those the only three you're considering or the only three that are allowed?

I've got several that would be fun to iron sight at that distance.

Those are the only three allowed for this league.

If it were up to me I'd use a m1903... I've got one with normally less than a .5 /.75 inch group at 300-500.

Still leaning to M1A even tho the Garand is my fave. Just not sure I want to drop all the cash that's going to be needed. Perhaps I'll roll with the garand with some new parts and barrel for the first league and just go from there. Suck it up,.. I don't I have to win everything I do.

At the very least it will give me a feel for the other douches and their attitudes. I swear shooting competitions remind me of the movie Blades and a bunch of skate bitches.

As soon as my son gets a little older I'm going to start him up on learning how to shoot.

My dad and I used to shoot a lot when I lived in the area. It was great fun.

If those are the only three you can use are you allowed a different round out of the AR or just .223? I've got a .308 in that body style and if it were me I'd buy a new upper for it and go 6.5 grendel :)

I say go with the garand, it's the one that's goin to make you happy just based on what you're saying here. Even if you don't win that's the one you enjoy shooting.

Do you reload?

The rounds chambered allowed/required change throughout the matches/positions. Here is the official course of fire.

The courses of fire consist of four separate matches shot in three different shooting positions at three different distances.

The 80 round "Regional Match" course.

20 shots slow fire from "standing" at 200 yards.
20 shots rapid fire from "sitting" at 200 yards.
20 shots rapid fire from "prone" at 300 yards.
20 Shots slow fire from "prone" at 600 yards.

The 50 round "National Match" course.

10 shots slow fire from "standing" at 200 yards.
10 shots rapid fire from "sitting" at 200 yards.
10 shots rapid fire from "prone" at 300 yards.
20 shots slow fire from "prone" at 600 yards.

You start in Standing position, at the 200 yard line. Standing is fired "slow fire" loading one shot at a time. You are allowed one minute per shot and are also allowed two additional minutes for two "sighting" shots.

The 80 round course is 22 shots, two sighting shots and 20 shots for record in 22 minutes.

The 50 round course is 12 shots, two sighting shots and 10 shots for record in 12 minutes.

Next is Sitting position, also shot at the 200 yard line. Sitting position is shot "rapid fire", 10 shots in sixty seconds with a mandatory reload. Just like in standing you are allowed two minutes for two sighting shots. Then the command is given for "shooters to rise", you load either two or five rounds for Service Rifle or five rounds for Match Rifle. When the targets come up you get into shooting position, fire your two or five shots, reload (eight or five) and finish firing in sixty seconds.

For the 80 round course you shoot two strings of 10 shots.

For the 50 round course you shoot one string of 10 shots.

The third match is shot from the "Prone" position at 300 yards. Just like "Sitting" it is shot "rapid fire" only now you have seventy seconds for ten rounds. As in Sitting you are allowed two minutes for two sighting shots.

For the 80 round course you shoot two strings of 10 shots.

For the 50 round course you shoot one string of 10 shots.

The final match is shot from the "prone" position, only now in "slow fire" from the 600 yard line.
You are allowed twenty two minutes for two "sighting" shots and twenty shots for record.

Actually I'm considering scrapping the idea sadly.

A) going to cost a lot that I don't have especially with the recent medical problems.

B) I don't think my knees can handle the sitting position anymore. Well not well enough to be competitive to a level I'm happy with. I trouble sitting indian style now days ffs.
