View Full Version : My parents are the Kinsellas (Field of dreams)

So my parents are half* insane. My mom enjoys mowing the lawn as a good way to relax, and she's a Red Sox fan (My father, sister and I are Yankee fans), but she's always wanted a field to mow like the red sox field (all cross stitched). So one day I suggested jokingly that they should make a baseball field. I came home about a week later to find several lumber jacks in our backyard, cutting down over an acre of land. This was a few years ago.
Tomorrow is my mothers birthday, and we're having an baseball party for her, the field is pretty nearly complete; full backstop, clay baselines, outfield has grown in... hopefully I'll have some pics to post in this thread afterwards, in the meantime all I have is a pic prior to completion of the cutting, from left field:
<edited out until I fix my router>
My cellphone is being an asshole, otherwise I'd show the more recent pics (we played a friendly game on thanksgiving last year on a half-complete field). I plan on posting more pictures after this weekend. Have a great weekend folks!

LOL, that is pretty damn cool.
If you build it...
Nice story. :)
Edited to add: A man who honors his mother is a good man.

... one really nice touch is that we've come up with a name for the field. We're naming it after my father's friend who died of cancer not more than a month ago, "Mike Stark Memorial field", Falcon 6, he was a great man, vietnam helicopter pilot, I can't say enough good things about him.

While the baseball diamond is awesome there is no way I'd give up my woods for anything. You can't go get lost in a baseball park to escape the day, bringing nothing but a book and a sandwich. Growing up with a huge woods at my disposal I remember weekends my brother and I would just be gone exploring, building forts, etc. Woods > all.

Awesome.
Reminds me of when we built an actual regulation football field in my grandmother's back yard when she was snow birding for a few months.
Man did I get in some deep shit... the yard was completely ruined from running in snowed on grass daily. Basically a mud yard. She wasn't happy that we took apart her fences to build goal posts either.
Ah the good days.

My cousin finally got me a couple of pics from the party (my camera was dead), we had something near 40 people show up off and on throughout the night, was a great time. I made sure none of them included my mom... so fire away with the comments (None of them contain me either, but that had more to do with me showing up late)

Nice action shot of my aunt hacking a high floater (my cousin there is pinch running for her, and yes, the catcher has one leg)

Yes, that's a tree in right field... we've got some sweet ground rules to deal with that! (and we're putting cup holders on the back of the tree)

Good shot of the backstop, bit rough around where the benches are going to go, but it's a work in progress.

Can't wait till we have some real games, that was more of a mismatched pickup type of game... when we have a real "opening day" it won't include all the pinch runners and practically "swing till the balls in play".
I want your parents...
You can have the one legged catcher though. :\

Big party this weekend, whole lot of my friends and my sisters friends coming to play, my dad has been going crazy prepping, made a sweet addition to the backstop, an upper deck.

The local Nathans rep provided us with 200 hotdogs for the event, otherwise I'd invite Meth.

Somehow I missed this post originally.
Still plenty of woods left. You'd like this, we've setup a target range in left field off the field, and we use the upper deck as a shooting platform. Or we launch skeet from right field toward center (so we're firing in the direction of Home-> third). The power company is required to maintain a certain amount of woods as some sort of carbon offset or something...

We probably won't have a keg :( but we'll park a few coolers out there.
I'm not sure how I feel about being around some of you hooligans, but a Northeast PC pickup game/get together isn't out of the question for next summer.

Move to CT! That circle of woods to the left of the house is a new road that went in, with a few lots ready to build!

Be umpires? I dunno. I figured if it's based in CT chances are you're a fan of one or the other. Maybe you like watching AAA baseball (i.e. national league/Mets) or you just hate baseball in general (in which case why would you even go)? It's Cel's place so ask him what the rules are.

Alright, it's settled. Anticore will supply the rifles. I'll bring the kegs. And Daniel will bring the color.
I'll be on the east coast for like another two months, so let's make it happen.
Edit: no yankees or boston fans though.

That's pretty cool. I'm not a baseball fan myself, but it must be nice to have that much land that you can do something like that with and still have plenty of woods left over.
PS - Watch out for vampires.

The side of the road my parents are on are all my father's brothers and sisters, and the nearest one (they've got a path cut through the woods to the field) has two boys ages ~8, ~6, who love it... the 6 year old brought his boyscout troop to the field to get some merit badges.
The other side of the road is new development and a lot of new couples built there (including my cousin who just had a kid about 4 months ago), so some even younger kids, my dad's really looking forward to being able to have the local kids come play when they're old enough.

I'd have imagined the Nathan's rep would be your favorite part. I saw him last weekend and he was disappointed he couldn't make it to the party, he was gonna bring his stand and cook the dogs up for us. ... I gotta find the local Guinness rep.

Nathan's 4/1 dogs = epic win
