View Full Version : Setting up a Warrior on the side

Hey guys, I could use a hand from some people who know a thing or two about warriors. I've always wanted to play one just to goof around, nothing serious. So I really don't mind if they're gimped naturally (which is what I hear a lot about). Playing a cleric as my main, I just want something that plays different for when I'm bored of casting.
So I created a war. My question is at the moment, my DS is total suckage. Now I know Warriors aren't the masters of DS when fighting, but I feel like I'm doing something wrong. So before I get too far into playing this character, I'd like a lil advice.
Gonna make him thw and voln fu. Looking at it now, I'm not sure what I was doing last night. I imagine maybe lower my CMANs a bit and get dodge up?
Really I'm just trying to figure out a decent training plan that would help me out. Going from pure to square leaves me with a lot of questions.

Everyone's DS blows when they are young, especially since you have no shield to bulk it up. A warrior's DS is going to suck from beginning to end, it's up to you to circumvent that. Redux is the primary factor, since it removes the majority of the physical damage. Dodge is another factor, seeing as how you have no shield to utilize BLOCK, 2x in dodge and the combat manuever PARRY MASTERY would definately be something you want to get with.
Also, you need to make armor use a priority to get into something that will hold up to a blow.

Seriously, 3x armor use, 3x fitness. You'll be horrid until you're in brig, and even then you'll get hit often, and well. When you finally get into half/full plate though, you'll start reaping the rewards.

What everyone else has said is exactly true. Luckily, even with a low DS, young warriors are actually really easy to play. Stance dance. Wait for a creature to swing, go stance O, and smash it with your THW.
Young warriors are more or less the opposite of old warriors. When you're young, you have to take care not to get hit because most builds won't have a shield, you don't get any redux around title (and it doesn't get useful until another 10 levels later), but you'll kill things faster than any other class.

I disagree my rogue with strengths and surge of strength on can snipe from the shadows at 3 second RT aiming for the eyes...and with ambush high...it kinda takes half the time to kill it. search it and leave the room assuming its 1 critter per room. however, i agree a warrior will kill faster than any other situation, such as other ohe swingers (unless crit weighting is involved of course). and most spell casters because often times it will take multiple casts for pures to kill the creature.
PS- if you meant over all...such as "the average rogue setup", "average sorc setup" etc....disregard my rambling then

Don't forget the spelltanking...full set of Elementals, Colors, Blurs, Thurfels, Dim Aura, and Powerful Look will go a long way with your DS

I suggest going with Rogue instead of warriors. Rogues are like the beefed up version of warriors. They should just remove the warrior profession altogether.

For the moment, I would drop brawling, bump your dodge and armor use up.
I would abandon all your current cman abilities. Wspec is good for AS boosting when it becomes needed, but right now its not needed. Bullrush is good to knock casters down and other targets that are otherwise difficult to kill while standing, not necessary yet. Mblow sucks... always.
You'd be better served putting all your CMAN points into parry mastery for the moment, IMO. I doubt you really have the stamina right now to even use mblow or bullrush frequently, and the AS boost from wspec is pretty weak. Also, from around 10-20, just hit your primary node and ask for dims, powerful look and join up for mass spells whenever you can. Most empaths and clerics in the area have no problem dropping 2-5 mana on a young player.
You will need 3 ranks of wspec around title or level 25 in order to train weapon bonding and pick your favorite weapon. A lot of folks doing the two-handed training path like mauls or perfectly forged mattocks. Claids are good, of course, but if you can get your hands on a 4x maul at train 10 you may like it even more than a claid.
As mentioned, stance dancing is pretty easy at lower trains. Critters aren't prepping nasty spells to take you out, so you can just let them swing first while in defensive, stance to offensive and you'll usually stun them to death with a two-hander.
One other thing to keep in mind, but I don't know if you're setup stat-wise to make great use of it. COL is a really good starting society. With help of your other characters, you can easily progress through the ranks. +35 AS/DS is a massive boost for young players. However, with your stats, you might not have the spirit capacity to support COL. Since the durations are level-based, you'd probably need 9-10 spirit to keep those signs active without suffering from the spirit loss. Right now, it looks like you might have 6 spirit, and that will definitely not be enough, and you have no ranks in harness power, so you'd have to boost that to at least 5.
In the long run GoS is a great society for warriors when considering the powers, but it is mana intensive for warriors and can make you suffer in the stamina department. Though, in the lower levels, COL really shines as a great society to consider for solving some of those DS and AS struggles in the 15-30 level range. You know... as long as it doesn't conflict with your RP.

yup the warrior's greatest strength: not being able to aim at the head

Go dwarf only if you are a ranged attacker. I've been playing a dwarven warrior and theirs a lot of critters that are height restricted then what was usually assumed. This is below 50th level btw, can't say above that.
And the leg or tackle etc. then aim head doesn't quite work as it would seem. I suggest going ranged if you're going dwarf.

i took my ambushing dwarf to 74 as a head hitter....not very hard amb critter left leg hide amb critter head.....dead...problem solved and actually the older i got the easier it was to hit heads...very rarely do i find something too tall now to hit in the head...grimswarm, and anything "giant" is hard to hit in the head...this all boils down to patience really. do you have the patience to leg something before you head it if it happens to be too tall?

It's not that I'm impatient its the fact that if I fail that leg I'm in hard RT and stance O open to attack. Even if I manage to leg it his buddies will get free swings at me for 5 seconds. 1 shot 1 kill is best.

Welcome to the One Trick Pony warrior population.
Durfin is 95th train. He has NEVER, in his entire span of training, had any issue hunting because of his height and he has always used either a handaxe or a mattock. You just suck.
