What is a good number of ranks to have in magic item use/scrolls to ensure they work everytime?

1 rank per level of the spell you wish to cast. Often 10 or so more more ranks in both skills will ensure a 100% cast.

Additional: Because most players in GS will never a) find a scroll with a 25th level + spell, or b) ever own an item with a 25th level + spell in it, I would aim for getting 25 ranks of both Arcane Symbols and MIU, respectively.

You may want to get more if you're a pure caster, simply because it's usually a really cheap way to ensure you have enough magic ranks to make your runestaff effective.

The question didn't sound like it was from the perspective of a pure.

25 ranks should be enough unless your trying to invoke a 20th rank spell on an outside circle then you might have some difficulty. Most of the useful spells, however, are lower than that.

Just remember that encumberance effects the modifier.

High end items require more than 1 rank/lvl to use effectively for MIU, especially if it's out of circle.

With 20 ranks in Arcane Symbols, my rogue can't read 419 or 119 for some reason either.

Chica has 25 in MIU and Arcane Symbols and I'm yet to find a scroll or magic item she can't use. I'm unlikely to ever own anything super cool that would need more, so I would say 25 in each is pretty good for a normal person.

I don't think I've ever seen a 119 or 419 scroll.

Kind of on subject...
Does anyone have a concise list of what spells can actually be imbedded? Like, rangers can make rods and have a sorc imbed.
I'm pretty clueless on the subject, I just know I have access to them but I don't know what they are.
