Some friends and I went out drinking last night and the topic of conversation turned to the best live band we've ever seen.

Top 3 for me are:

1) Rage Against the Machine, by far.
2) Counting Crows
3) Coheed and Cambria

Asha

1. Iron Maiden, by far. Donnington 03.
2. Rage Against The Machine. (going to see thm again in Germany, summer this year.)
3. Manic Street Preachers.

Still want to see Coheed. I've also heard that Queen were the best but I was too young.

I only read your topic and thought of Coheed, haha...

My top 3 are:

1) Megadeth
2) RATM
3) Coheed

lol dude, complete with boeing 747s flying low directly over the stage at seemingly key moments in the set, it was the greatest experience of my life.
And well worth waiting 13 years for!

Definitely see them any chance you get. But it'd be better at a huge fest.

Can't name a top 3 or whatever, but there are definitely some concerts that are more memorable than others.

Project 86, even with a small crowd in a tiny venue, was brilliant. Any of the bands I saw at Purple Door last year were awesome, particularly Red, The Devil Wears Prada, Disciple, Spoken and Norma Jean. Skillet was great as ever when I saw them back in August, and Thousand Foot Krutch and Kutless back at Creation.

Waaaaaay back when I got to see Jimmy Page and Robert Plant in concert with my brothers and father. I don't remember much of it other than Kashmir utterly rocking the arena.

Hoping to see Demon Hunter when they play in Philadelphia on my birthday. I hear that their shows have to be seen to be believed. Also thinking of seeing Skillet and TFK again, along with Decyfer Down when they swing by here in May on the last stop of their tour.

To completely bare my nerdiness, I have to name the Philadelphia Orchestra. Even if they probably aren't a band in the sense you guys are thinking of, their concerts put any music recording to shame. If you like any sort of classical music at all, you have to go see a decent orchestra sometime in your life.

The Chieftains are also fantastic if you enjoy Irish music at all. Just saw them last week for the third time (they play in Philadelphia each year around St. Patrick's Day), and it never gets old.

Warriorbird
03-25-2008, 04:56 PM
There was all sorts of flame work going on. I remember feeling seared during Du Hast. I think there was a firework arrow at one point.

I don't know if they got in trouble for anything they did... but Till's a wild guy. I think they got arrested later during the tour. I'm pretty sure most of the other artists smoked up at some point live but I don't remember Rammstein doing any of that... just some pawing of each other and a whole lot of flames. Their display stuff was pretty crazy... but a lot of people's was.

Still... like Busta being better than anybody else on Roc the Mic... I think of that as their night.

HAH I was there ;) was my second concert when I was like 13-14 first one was The Who in like '88.

Honestly the best "show" I have seen was probably Marilyn Manson Antichrist superstar tour. That dudes know how to throw a show.

Narrowing down a list of 100's will be hard but if I must

Norma Jean
Tool
Throwdown (only in small venues 500 people max)

First manson show was Portrait with NIN then a bunch of little clubs. Still have my stubs for 96 (ACS). Never went after ACS. I always felt ACS was where manson began singing about Corporate too much/too polished etc. JMO.

I haven't seen Manson since ACS either, but that fucking tour was amazing.

Special place in my heart for my first serious concert when I was a freshman in high school: Smashing Pumpkins on their MCIS tour, opening act No Doubt, who had just released Tragic Kingdom. Awesome.

I once tripped on mushrooms so hard during either a Phil Lesh or Roger Waters concert (I've seen both live) I swear I met God. It was beautiful. I just can't remember many of the details, like which one of the two it was.

I always loved Fear Factory live.

Rage at Rock the Bells was good this past summer, but I think I'm getting too old for concerts. I used to be in all the mosh pits, now I just don't like to be bumping into other people.

But by far and away my favorite person to see live is Ani DiFranco. That little 5'2" girl packs so much energy it can be felt in the back row.

Funny TheE... pit's the only place I *don't* mind bumping other people. I hate people touching me, except in the pit.

Sidenote:
Oh, all the Cold shows I saw in Philly were great, close to top 3.

The one I saw in Grand Rapids wasn't good, but everyone was waiting for Staind. That was cool because they shot part of the video to So Far Away there, but it's not in my top 3.

Stanley Burrell

I never understood moshing, so the one time I did it, ah, I think you're not supposed to NFL tackle people and throw jump kicks everywhere. They had to stop the music. It was so embarrassing. IT WAS AT MY BEST FRIEND'S BAR-MITZVAH FOR GOD'S SAKE :'(

And that was when I started listening to The Wu-Tang Clan.

ElanthianSiren
03-27-2008, 11:01 AM
My only rule is stay out of the pit if there are skinheads. Common sense for people whose company you'd rather not have.

I like it because people touching me tends to make me edgy. Unfortunately, I like loud music, thus concerts. -So it's a way to let off that edge and enjoy the music, whereas I'd be standing in the middle of the room just agitated in any other situation. Alternatively, I could take lorzipam, but what fun would that be?

Asha

Norma Jean

Agreed, Norma Jean is fantastic. I should also add Haste the Day and The Showdown to the list of great bands to see live.

If anyone's near southeastern PA and enjoys loud music, consider going to Purple Door in August. Two days of hard music in the summer is a beautiful thing, not to mention you can always tell where the mosh pits are by the huge clouds of dust they stir up. :D
