A friend linked me to an ebay entry and I just had to vent... who in their right mind would actually pay for this???

Selling a suit of 8x masterful crit padded double leather. This is one of the most padded sets of double leather in the game not to mention it weighs only 8 pounds. Pretty rare to see a set of leather this padded on such a high enchant. Perfect armor for a runestaff user. This armor is estimated at about 150 million gs coins which translates to about $2,250 dollars at a rate of 15 dollars per 1 million gs coins. However I will set the minimum bid at $1,000. For more info send me an email at xxxxx.
Disclaimer: I am merely selling the time it took to aquire this fantasy armor, Simutronics is the sole owner of gemstone IV and all of its items.

<coughs> yea, I've nothing better to do with a smooth grand than to..... gah! I looked up the other post by the same seller and he's putting up a 93 level sorc for 600. I think the thing that disturbs me the most is that someone will most likely pay for it in the end.

150mil? I don't know of any item in the game that's worth that much. I'd rather go for a self mana Spirit Strike two-hander that a friend of mine has, and it's a hell of alot cheaper.

You obviously know fuck all about the higher end of items in GS then, don't you. I can name atleast ten, off hand that are worth 150 mil + And they probably number in the hundreds as well.

there are several items I would drop 1000 on without blinking.
The sorc for 600 bucks is a very good deal if any are thinking about it. I know my sorc sold for much more.

Anyone who pays real money, which can be saved or used for bills, for nothing more than some computerized coding that only exists in a game--and which will be broken and need repair once breakage rolls in, is a fool.

Well I see it like this: How much do you pay for your level of enjoyment, be it drugs, computer games, whatever? GS itself, as you describe it, is us paying money for lines of code. If my level of enjoyment is enhanced by spending a lil extra cash I happen to have (by spending more money on a hobby), so be it. I know I can earn $15 quicker in reality than 1 million in GS.

It's all a matter of how much RL cash your hobby is worth to you.
GS is NOT worth $1000 for armor.... to me.
Now spending that on an awesome plasma monitor to play GS on? Hmm.. mebbe ;)

I concur. except for the STFU. I spend $60 a month on gemstone, and more on occasion. I spend alot of time advancing my characters, and acquiring items that suits my character well. I personally do not want to sell my character, or buy one. But I am not condoning anybody for considering their time in gemstone as an investment, or simply wanting the money back that they have spent if they wish to leave.
I don't see the point of buying a level 93 character however, when the best of times are spent leveling. OR maybe someone wants to buy a 93 train character to protect their younger character? To bully others? An investment to sell in the future? Or to roleplay period.
Although, I don't see much roleplayers in gs prime, and most time are spent hunting as well. If you're going to buy a 93 train character for roleplay.. I would much rather have it in platinum service, simply because of it's environment.

Indeed Czeska, and others who agree. The purchase certainly isn't a long term investment. It's likely to break or otherwise get lost. Not like you can insure it and replace it or the money you spent, if the loss was due to natural incidences and not a game glitch.

Why is what you deem appropriate the standard for others? As long as you take care of what you’re responsible for, how much you spend on your hobbies is your own business. As long as your spending habits aren’t putting your family on the street, I don’t see what the big deal is.

Personally, I wouldn't spend that much for any game. I have dropped a few grand on my horse-back riding though, so it is all in what you want to do with your money.
But when breakage goes live, eventually that armor will go bye bye. That is also why I don't waste alters on weapons or armor.

If I had a grand that I was just going to blow... I'd be in Vegas.
Otherwise, its put into savings bonds for my little boy or into the market in one of my mutual funds...
I perceive this as being a better ROI than sinking it into Gemstone.

Lyonis,
Learn to read and keep up with things. I've never said my standard is the one standard, I've expressed an opinion. You don't like it, that's fine, I'm still entitled to state it.
I'd spend $1,000 on something collectible -and- tangible, something that will grow in it's investment.
I'd spend $1,000 on luxuries, if I had it, like a mini-vacation or taking 10 friends out to dinner at a very nice restaurant. What I get from both is memories that will long be pleasant, and hopefully an experience worth remembering forever.
Unlike a piece of computer code that stands a very good chance of breaking at some point or getting lost. And won't be replaced if it's not the game's fault. Unlike my antique Rollei camera that is insured. Or my car.
If people want to blow their money on some fictional item, that's their choice and I hope they're happy with it.

Just to be totally off topic... When a radiograph is being taken the thing in the room that gets the least irradiated is the part of the patient that is being shot. The dangerous thing about x-rays is the scatter radiation that bounces off the patient, the casette, the tabletop, and everything else defined by the little light square that indicates the target area. Any good technician will collumate as tightly as possible to minimize that area. So as long as you use a lead drape on those portions of your anatomy the doctor isn't interested in the exposure is minimal. I have to hold animals for pictures all the time and my dosimeter always comes back clean. Of course I gown up and wear gloves and a collar.
The extra arm growing out of my spine? Oh, always had that. <g>

I find it hilarious that you speak of someone spending that money as wasting it. That thousand dollars, which is a lot to you, may not mean much to whoever is buying stuff on ebay. It could be equivalent to you buying a movie ticket. You spend/waste some of your money on a fictional world or you wouldn’t be here posting, so why is spending more than you wrong? Or you don’t spend your money on a fictional world and you just spend time commenting on it, which is truly sad. The sooner you come to the realization that you are no better than the rest of us that spend time in the world of GS, the happier you’ll become. If you can think of all of these worthwhile things to do, then why aren’t you out doing them?
I’ll agree with you though, we’re all entitled to an opinion. Your problem is you like shoving yours down people’s throats.

To each their own. If someone wants to spend their money on a game, a line of code, a photograph, a rugby shirt, a pen, or whatever, fine. Its their money. Condemning people for what they take and interest in, for what they love, is just like condemning them for having different coloured skin.

Heh. I just did the absurd, in all probability.
My grandmother, for as long as I can remember, has dreamed of owning an authentic Japanese wedding kimono. I happened to find one, made in 1925 and in pristine condition. I bought it on the spot.
Doing so set me back a penny or two, but it is well worth the money spent from my point of view. :D

I spend alot on my hobbies too. I, in fact, bought something for GS off ebay once. Well... I tried to, but someone else won, but then I bought one of the items in the package deal from the guy that won, so... well.. I don't know if it counts, but yeah.
And I'll spend for my other hobbies too. I know I've burnt at least a couple of hundred on my Mage Knight figures, and don't even get me started on my books. At one point, for half a year or so, I was spending 1k on books a month, at the very least.
Other people surely see that all as a waste. I could be saving up to buy a house or um.. other stuff. But it makes me happy and that's all that matters to me, whether what makes me happy is tangible and sensible or not.

Depends on the padding. No way would I pay over 20 million for any 10x item. And most usually the padding comes before the enchant. Ardwen's red armor (owned by Blueland I think now) isn't highly enchanted to my knowledge, yet is worth something like 4-500 million. The fog beatle armor, 9x incredibly crit padded brig, was only valued at 150 mil.

12-22-2003, 03:42 AM
Well considering its 9/10 next to godly padding, and i have seen such armor sell for over 150 mil at private auctions. Not bad for 10x doubles i'd say.

Ardwen sold the red armor? Bastard, he didn't know it yet but he was supposed to give it to me.
I could see dropping serious coins for items like that but the problem is I don't have the coins. It took an act of god for me to get ahold of my 6x decent crit doubles so I know going for that kind of armor is shooting for the moon. Besides my next purchase (yeah right) will be Sorrow.
