View Full Version : Strange Allergy

Is it possible to develop an allergy to something that used to be fine?
I like apples. I don't eat them all the time, but once every week or so I'll pick one up. A few months ago, I noticed that my gums started itching (bugged the hell out of me) and the only thing I could determine it was, was the apple. A few days later I tried an apple again and the same thing happened. So I stayed away from apples for the most part (though it seemed the skin was the problem, as I had eaten apple pieces without problem).
Today I went to Giant's salad bar to pick up breakfast, and I grabbed a few apple wedges (with skin). When I tried one, I could feel my throat starting to close up. Almost the feeling you have when you're sick with a sore throat.
Anyone have any similar experiences or advice (other then stay away from apples)

Allergies can come on all of a sudden. For years, my mom had given me aspirin if it was needed..never had a problem. Then one day when I was 12, I came home from school and I had a killer headache for some reason...so I took an aspirin. About 10 minutes later, the skin directly under my eyes puffed all the way out, it was really freaky. She rushed me to the hospital, the doc said it was an allergic reaction to the aspirin. He said that sometimes they just come on out of no where. He gave me a shot of something, my eyes returned to normal..and from that day on, I've never taken aspirin again.
Oddly enough, I've noticed with certain fruits sometimes I get the same thing you're talking about. A weird, VERY annoying itching on the roof of your mouth, tongue and your throat (dont remember if it was on my gums) But it only happens sometimes...apples, pears, plums, peaches, nectarines, strawberries and cherries. I thought it was an allergic reaction of some sort...but again, it doesn't ALWAYS happen so I don't know.
**edited to add--your doctor can do some sort of weird allergy test. I don't know much about it exactly, but apparently it's a way of determining almost everything (if not everything) you're allergic to. Maybe you want to give that a shot. I'm going to...cause I don't wanna have to give up all that fruit if I don't have to :(

No, its because you're a twat. My brother suffers from something very similar. He's alergice to practically everything. However, there is some specifics to his condition. I'm not going to tell you because I'd much rather troll, something I'm only capable of, you seem to think.

- Good call by Daina.. It could be some sort of pesticides you're allergic to on the apples. Definitly go to an allergist if you felt your throat closing up, before you test for yourself because that is serious shit. You're pretty much dead if your throat closes unless someone in your house knows how to perform a tracheotomy (sp?) with a knife and straw, lol.
- Stray, your sequence of posts here is why no one likes you. Take a bath with a blowdryer kthx.

Your body chemistry changes roughly every seven years. Dunno why, but it does. So you can develop allergies 'all of a sudden' to something that has never bothered you. Also, you can suddenly be no longer allergic to something you were before.
Cats used to make my eyes swell shut. No problems now.

Another way the body forms allergies is when your immune system is shot to shit. Say you have a cold or flu and your body takes in pollen or some other airborn particle (dust). Some people then develop hayfever for a year *shrug* The human body (like yours) can be a very weak thing

Just wait for Bestatte to get here and we'll know what you're allergic to, what she's allergic to, the diameter of the Sun, and her latest bodily function all in one post.
P.S. - Pears are better anyway.

I have the same allergic reaction to some fruits and nuts. When I was younger it didn't bother me but now that I'm older I can't bite into certain fruit or eat certain nuts or my gums start to get red and hurt, my lips burst into the size of watermelons and my throat starts to itch and close in a little that it almost feels like I'm choking. Not fun. Usually I have to drink milk to neutralize the pain. My mother has the same allergic reactions so I'm only assuming that she passed this down to me.
If it truly bothers you just have your doctor check it out, or give you an allergy test.
And I'll concur, pears are better.

That must have been scary as hell, Wezas. I have heard that one can become allergic to things they have not had reactions to before. Sounds like you just proved it.
Since you had that feeling that your throat was closing, it is probably a good idea to talk to a doctor and get treatment going. A severe anaphylactic reaction is life-threatening, and how can you know that you will not react to something else?

If I remember correctly, alergies are 90% of the time psychological, there was something that changed in your life and apple has a meaning with this.
I am alergic to cats since i'm 18 years old, and the day it begun I end up a relationship with a girl, that had a lot of cats.
Do tests, and examine your life!

Allergies, in and of themselves, are not psychological in origin. Individuals who have allergies are genetically predisposed to the problem. Their immune systems overreact to certain proteins (antigens). Once the immune system identifies a foreign protein as "not self" and overreacts in trying to eliminate it, that particular protein is an allergen to that particular individual and will cause problems from that time forward.
There is some indication that psychological factors have a part in asthma, but not in general allergy.

I seriously doubt 90% of allergies are psychological. There was no reason for me to be allergic to fruits and nuts. I love apples and artichokes, damnit, and I can't eat them! One day I was fine, the next I wasn't.
Perhaps you were always allergic to cats and didn't have a noticable reaction until you were around a lot of them. I've always been allergic to cats, but since I never grew up with them I could never get immune to them. I'm slowly getting there living with one.
Either way, get tests done if you're worried about it, just to make sure you're not allergic to anything else.

It looks like all the other "professionals" here have already explained everything there is to know about allergies. From Czeska and her/his 7-year info, to HarmNone and her anaphalactic shock thing, to X's theory of psychological allergic reactions, etc. etc.
So how about we just say EVERYONE is an expert at EVERYTHING, and stop singling me out, hm?
Oh and the diameter of the sun is um... really big.

I steam mine and then start pickin off the leaves, then go for the heart. Most resturaunts put the hearts in some kind of sauce/liquid that I don't like.
There is a french resturaunt nearby that has them whole as an appetizer. Much better then snails.

Artichokes with lemon, or sometimes hollandaise.
Only vegetables and fruits I do not love are all melons.....and pears. Pears are icky. Bad pears.
I could do a google on allergies if anyone wishes me too. I personally dont know much of allergies, only basics from a veterinary standpoint. But I'm always willing to help!

Do you dip the artichoke leaves in anything, Wezas. Some use melted butter, others mayonnaise, and others salad dressing of various kinds. There seem to be a lot of ways to enjoy them.
HarmNone uses melted butter for hers :D

I don't dip, but that may just be because I'm not a big butter fan.

I saw that in one of my course, I may be wrong with all allergies.. I should dig those books back...
Try this: ask someone you know to do your lunch (take out or at home) 7 times in a week (so every day of that week)
ask that person to put apple essence, apple smashed, apple juice, whatever in something you won't taste it (sunday, whatever) AND fake apple "taste" (flavor of) a next time (so for exemple, day 2 = fake, day 5 = real)
Check the result, if you had problems with the fake (placebo), it's psychological

Problem is, Excalibur, that Wezas had a feeling that his throat was "closing up". That symptom presents the possiblity of life-threatening reaction. Not a good idea to test that sort of thing. ;)
Best to get some tests run.

Hah I'm allergic to cats as well..which wasn't the case as a little girl.
Here's a freaky thing. I used to be allergic to pecans. I'd break out in hives when I ate them. Now, I'm no longer allergic to them. So...I guess allergies after a while can disappear as well?

You can develop an allergy to pretty much anything without warning. I'd be worried about having an allergy to the apple itself if your throat swelled up or something of that nature -- my thought would be maybe something to do with your teeth, or perhaps some sort of pesticide/chemical on/in the apple itself.

Hell yeah.
I used to love bananas till one day at my cousins, my uncle gave me one and I had a reaction so severe I had to be rushed to the hospital for adrenalin injections as my throat was rapidly closing.:bouncy:
I also am alergic to many other fruits, but if the skin is peeled I find the reaction is tremendously reduced.
Processed fruit like that coming in cans I am able to eat almost without any problems so I assume at this point it is mostly the pesticides that changed although that is just that, an assumption.

Although I, personally, would not call anyone a moron for not knowing about any individual subject and admitting that lack of knowledge, perhaps the best choice in that case would be to say nothing at all. :)

Holy crap. I thought I was the only person with the strange allergy to apples. I get the exact same reaction when I eat a raw apple, but not apple juice or apple pie or whatever. I think it has something to do with the pesticides that they put on fruit, because it happens with apples and peaches, but not bananas and oranges and other things that have a skin you take off. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Hmm...I guess one way to test this out would be to find one of those stores that sell organic stuff. Get an apple or whatever from there, eat it and see how you feel. Though Wezas you shouldn't do that if your throat closes up.
