Any parent who would buy their 15 year old a brand new car, I don't care if it's a Lexus or a Kia, is a dumb cunt anyway. Kids don't need a brand new car for their first one 'cause chances are they're gonna hit SOMETHING with it anyway. Let them learn on a safe, used car that's unlikely to break down.

Or someone who has the money to do it? A new car is certainly safer than a used one.
Let's say someone wants to buy their kid a $25,000 car in cash for their 16th birthday. It would take $30/week for the lifetime of the kid at no interest. At 8%, you can toss in under $7,500 and let it sit.

Mine was an '89 Chevy Cavalier convertable that stalled (and often took at least 10 minutes to start back up) every time I slowed down from a speed above 50 mph :(
It didn't get fixed until I talked to Darwar about the problem, and it took him literally 10 seconds to realize it was some sort of torc converter issue (or whatever it was called). After a year of hassles I finally got it fixed though. I still wonder why the dumbass mechanic couldn't realize it on his own, heh.

And the first time that spoiled little twat goes too fast because no one taught her limits and no one taught her to respect anything (because she's obviously TOO AWESOME), she'll wrap it around a tree or a pole. Or maybe it'll happen the next time she goes drinking with her friends and is too young and stupid to listen to her parents (which we all were to some extent at 15). Would you really risk a 65k car with that? I'm definitely of the opinion that a kid's first car should be safe and reliable, and used. Something inexpensive enough so that it wouldn't be terrible if they messed it up. And shit, no one needs to be spoiled that badly. Kids need to learn personal responsibility even before 15, and that girl seemed to have none.

LOL, that's like my fiance's car. He got his license late (at 23, :x), so he's still got his first car. It's a POS '93 Toyota Corolla. It's one of those black models from that year where all the paint has begun to chip and fade, so it's got giant grey patches all over it. It's also dented up from one of the previous owners, so it's total shit on the outside. I'm so mad though, because the only thing that's ever gone wrong with the car is that it needed new spark plugs. Well that, and some assjacket smashed his window yesterday and stole the faceplate from his CD player. They couldn't even get the thing out of the dash, but still stole the faceplate...................
Anyway, the first THREE cars I owned all broke down monthly or so, like it was a fucking ritual. I had shitty luck with cars for a long time :/
Edit: Oh but yeah, another point I forgot to make, his car rattles like hell above 60 too, haha. He just needs new tires and some serious balancing, though.

A new car is certainly safer than a used one.
I don't think that's true statement. A used car that's only a few years old and has reasonable mileage can be just as safe as a new car.
Let's say someone wants to buy their kid a $25,000 car in cash for their 16th birthday. It would take $30/week for the lifetime of the kid at no interest. At 8%, you can toss in under $7,500 and let it sit.
And let's say there are fair odds the kid will total the 25k car within a couple years. I'd rather spen 9-12k on the used car that's only few years old in that case (whether I had the money or not).

It's inherently safer to buy a car that you know hasn't been owned by some random guy.

I don't know if I'd call the odds "fair." I think only one person I know has totalled a car. Being a young driver doesn't make a person a retarded driver.

Not retarded. Inexperienced and more likely to get into accidents during their first couple years of driving. And more likely to total the car in an accident. Maybe not "fair odds" but they're a greater risk to get into an accident. Hence the decision to buy used cars for new drivers. Good used cars really aren't less safe than brand new ones in any way that matters- but they are cheaper.

Do you actually believe this? I mean just think about it for a second.
If two cars are exactly the same except one is brand new and one has been driven for 20,000 miles inherently the ware and tear on the second car makes it less safe to drive. All other things being equal a used car is logically less safe than a new car.

Really depends on how the milleage was added to car. Highway traffic versus stop and go city traffic.
Or if it was in Boston and was going through the many pot holes.
The engine is more likely to explode. Even if theres only a one in a billion chance the engine will explode at 20,000 miles its still 1 billionth less safe than the new car. I could come up with some reasonable scenarios but I dont feel like it.

A car with 20k miles on it is still under manufacture warantee FFS.
Your transmission could go out on the highway.
The engine could overheat because a coolant hose fell out.
The oil pump could break.
Your windshield wiper motor could stop working in a monsoon.
The door could fall off on your foot.
Your airbag could have been stolen by the seller.
The breaks could give.
The onboard computer could fry while your driving.
The previous owner could have stuffed your seats with popcorn, then while your driving on a hot day it all pops causing you to vear off the road into a mattress factory
A car with 20k miles on it is still under manufacture warantee FFS.
Your claim is a used car == new in safety. If you assume used equipment has a higher failure rate then new this is patently untrue. If you dont assume used equipment has a higher failure rate then new then I have a few computers Id like to sell you.
