You get a usenet account and a newsgroup reader. Then you put the info in the newsgroup reader, point it to the newsgroup you want to read, try to ignore all the spam, and post your trolls and flames.

Of course most people these days just care about the binary groups, which you'll most likely want a newsgroup reader that's specifically designed to download binaries, such as newsbin. Honestly I haven't used windows as my main os in 8 years, so I have no clue what's the most useful for binary groups these days. I know there's one that allows you to setup scripts to run after you've downloaded, so it'll automatically decompress files, use par files, and such..but I have no idea if that's newsbin or something else.

I'm mostly interested in the binary groups. I think I grasp the news reader thing -- what I'm confused about is actually finding what I'm looking for in the tons of newsgroups that are out there.

what are you looking for?

alt.binaries.sounds for mp3s..except alt.binaries.sounds.lossless.* which are flac or ape generally.

alt.binaries.cd.images, then there's the alt.binaries.games.*

Generally when you hear people talk about newsgroups they abreviated it.. alt.binaries.sounds.lossless = absl.

I'm not sure if this is sarcastic or not, because you're old enough to maybe not understand this.

That's why I use sabnzbd. Create an nzb, stick it in ~/nzb/scan .. and presto.. downloads the rars, checks them..if it needs pars, it downloads however many it needs, then unzips and deletes the rar and par files.
