View Full Version : How often do you wash your hair?

Back

Been reading about how washing your hair daily strips it of its natural oils and how damaging it can be. The hair product industry is huge. They want you to buy shampoo, conditioner, after-conditioner rinse, hair gel, pomade, hair spray, dyes, brushes, combs, hairdryers, curlers and the list goes on. On top of all that, they want you to buy “treatments” for your damaged hair?

Do you buy all that shit and does it give you the expected results? Or do you save your money and let nature do the work?

I like when my hair's settled down the day after I've washed it. I don't want shiny, bouncy shite.
I wash it every 2 days, it gets rinsed with water everyday though.

I have straight hair, and it's fine, making it necessary to wash daily.
I condition it daily, it helps with the tangles.
I do not use "hair treatments", but I do get 1/4 inch trimmed off every 6 - 8 weeks, to prevent split ends running wild.
I love my hair, until I see someone with naturally curly long hair, and then I hate my hair for being straight.
The end.

I can't wash it everyday as it will really dry it out and make it frizzy, no matter how moisterized the shampoo may be. I wash it every 2-3 days.

My job sometimes requires me to shower atleast 3 times a day. My hair is fucked. I keep it very short.

When I was working two jobs I HAD to wash it daily due the junk I'd put in there when I fixed it. Now I still take a shower daily and it gets washed, more out of habit since I got pretty pissed off about something a while ago and cut it super short.

I'll trade. My hair is naturally corkscrew curls and down to mid-back, but it's really fine and therefore hard to manage.

My hari is naturally straight and fine. It's relatively long and I wash it every day, use a good conditioner, and a leave-in conditioning treatment/detangler. Aside from that, I blow it dry on workdays, let it do it's own thing on weekends. When I have to go a couple days without, I go spazoid about it. Like squeaky clean and shiny.

Ditto.

I have to use moisturizing conditioner for the top, if i put my hair in a ponytail/bun/whatever it still frizzes like crazy on the top. Though if i comb it out completely when its dry it gets straight...still frizzy, but straight.

I have mid-back length, thick, wild corkscrew curls, but if not treated properly, it frizzes as it's very dry. I rinse daily with water and shampoo every 2-3 days.

I use Pantene and Garnier Nutrisse, normally, with some sort of leave-in cream treatment. If I have a nice occasion coming up, I will do hot oil.

Suck my happy tree, muthafuckorz. Here's my secret:

A) 1 bar of soap.
B) A conditioning bottle. You don't use this. It just makes your shower holders look more sophisticated.
C) Some more soap.
D) Dry and comb hair.

I would ease into the transition.

Your scalp tries to maintain homeostasis. If you wash daily -- it will produce a ton of oil. If you suddenly stop washing, your hair will look I-talian (fucking PONZZZD).

When I was in France for a month over the winter holidays I got into a routine of washing my hair every 4th day or so. It got to the point where I actually felt it was healthier. It looked greasy as fuck, but I felt like it was healthier. I'm too self-conscious to do that in my hometown though.

All you need to do to have good skin is keep it clean, and moisturize.

So because some have admitted to washing basically every other day instead, you're going to just not wash it for two weeks? Talk about exaggeration.

Unless you just lie around in your house without doing a single thing during that whole time, it's going to be really gross in like 3 days if your hair/scalp is used to being washed daily.

Are we talking about not using any products, such as shampoo and conditioner, or are you going to completely avoid water on your head for 2 weeks? The first would be doable, since your male and probably don't use any styling products, the second ... ugh! Good luck.

Nieninque

Two weeks wont do shit anyway. It takes longer than that for hair to sort itself out. All you will do is have skanky hair for two weeks then wash it.
I have had friends who have done the whole unwashed hair thing for years and it takes several weeks of uncomfortable and nasty looking hair before it sorts itself out. Their hair was beautiful though.

Two monks were walking along when they encountered a woman trying to cross a muddy spot in the road. One monk picked the woman up, crossed the mud and set her back down. Then the two monks went along their humble way.

At one point the other monk protested, “How could you ignore your piety and carry that woman like you did?” The other monk responded, “I set her down a long time ago. It is you who still carry her.”

I actually wash my hair daily with bath and body works anti bact foam soap. I don't like the residue that most shampoos/conditioners/soaps/bodywashes/andsoon leave on your body, so I guess you could say, I prefer my hair "stripped". Oh yeah, also they have a bunch of good smells, which I like.

I keep my hair short though (by female standards), so it doesn't get in my way in lab and I don't have to tie it back; it's about to my chin.

I wear a 0 fade when not completely shaven and wash maybe once a week with shampoo unless doing yard work or I'm under the hood of a car. Other than that I just scrub a dub with wathcloth with body wash.

It's my true belief that all that shampoo and shit makes your hair fall out.

I have tried to use different conditioners and I use all the tips the hair stylists have given me, this is the only thing that really helps me, other than keeping my hair short.

Try Finesse brand mousse in the round dark blue bottle. My hair is the same way except that it's curly, not wavy. I use the curl defining type, although they have about three or four different types. Anyway, this stuff works like a freakin dream. I wash my hair every day or every other day, but I always mousse right after I get out when my hair is still wet. Kills the frizz and tames my curls, but my hair stays soft and doesn't look wet/feel hard like how most other types of mousse make it.

They can be more intolerant of others than the ones they lambast.

I truly think if hippies ever came to power, we'd have a regime very similiar to the Khmer Rouge.

With that in mind, wash your hair once in a while goddamn, I know I do nightly.

Maybe you're allergic to sulfur (which is in many types of shampoo)? My soon to be sister in law used to get horrible breakouts/rashes before she realized (fairly late as an adult), and now uses a special shampoo/conditioner that doesn't affect her.

When my hair was long (down to the small of my back at its longest) I washed it every few days. Not only does your hair frizz out and get too dry but it IS a hassle and expense thing (you use gobs of shampoo and conditioner when you have a lot of hair). But that was 10+ years ago.

Ever since I've been keeping it over my collar and off my eyes, I wash it daily. It's easy, I barely use any shampoo and conditioner (by comparison) and it behaves better that way. Long hair has more options than short.

As for all the Italian cracks. Fuck all of you with a stick.

I have long wavy hair. I wash everyday, and condition everyday. I shampoo every other day ( I used to shampoo everyday; I stopped when I heard and asked about the same thing. ) When I shampooed everyday, it left my scalp dry (After drying my hair, I could almost feel it begging for moisture) Shampooing everyday will also cause it to be stringy, and your hair to thin.

I use little, to no styling products. Shampooing every other day will give your hair bounce. Long oily hair brushing against your face will cause you to break out. Icky.

CrystalTears
03-03-2008, 04:55 PM
How do you wash everyday but not shampoo everyday? Do you mean you're just rinsing with water then conditioning?

I massage my scalp, and hair with conditioner while showering.

Shalla
03-03-2008, 05:00 PM
I base whether or not I condition my scalp on how manageable, and limp my hair is before showering. If I believe it's moisturized, then I will forego conditioning my scalp, and would focus on conditioning the ends.

Blow drying - Use cool air after shampooing. Use warm air for when you skip on the shampoo. From my experience, the warm air + conditioner nutrients will make your hair softer. The warm air for some reason helps ( like warm water opens up your pores; cool water closes it. ) for your hair to absorb/bond with the conditioner. The cool air will only coat, but it will be shinier; notice when you wash your hair again that there is some residue, that's when you just condition the ends.

Experiment over. It went like this...

My hair was getting long again and I did not wash or get it wet for three weeks. I liked the fullness it was getting. All I had to do was brush it out. It was shiney and I could make a feax hawk with no bad smell. I could shape it like I wanted... but I did notice that far more strands were collecting in my bathroom sink. Now, at a ripe age I have a full head of hair, both my grandfathers had full heads of hair, but the hair loss did alarm me.

It needed to be cut and I would not walk into my barber shop with three week old non-washed hair. I asked my barber about it and the reply was generally that if you did not have very oily hair you could go a few days without washing and it would be healthier.

Whimsi

Sounds obsessive unless you are exercising at various points in the day.

I shower when I get up, and usually before I go to bed. If I hit the gym, I shower there also.

Most of it is because I simply cannot function without a shower in the morning, and if I exercise or work in the yard or do anything physical, I'll shower after that also.

No so much obsessive, more if I'm taking a shower I naturally wash my hair.

My scalp hurts if I don't wash my hair daily. It's thick, curly, and short, so it lays all fucked up when I sleep at night. When I wake up in the morning, I can't manage it. It is obvious when I have not washed my hair. Kind of like bed-head without buying all the styling products.

I just hate how un-manageable and big, hair can be when you've washed and conditioned etc. But lately I've found a good way to settle it down to something I can go to work with.
Just chuck on a bunch of conditioner after it's dried.
It's style city after that.

Like I might have said before, I tried the whole not washing thing when I was 15, I still love the feeling after a few days when it's settled down.
But after more than a week you'll look like a skank.
I have short, just over ear-length, dry boring hair btw.
