I know I don't really post here much anymore, but I do know that when I have a problem and google can't answer it, the PC probably can.

My laptop's DVD player doesn't recognize DVDs when they get put in...it clickity-clacks and spins the disk around, but somewhere between that and letting me install Hellgate, something goes wrong. It still writes and plays to CDs though. I'm fairly certain it's a driver issue, however, even with literally hours of googling, I can't find any sort of driver.

The model is LiteOn SlimType DVD RW SOSW-833S.

Hpel!? <3<3

You shouldn't need drivers for optical drives. Only thing you can try to do is update the firmware of the drive. If that doesn't work, your drive may be busted. Have you tried more than one disc?

Turn off auto-run... and possibly anti-virus. Lots of newer games come with copy protection that does some pretty underhanded shit in the auto-run, and some anti-virus programs get in the way.

Anyway, turn off auto-run and then put the DVD in and use explorer to look around in the drive, if it's letting you in then you've at least got a good start.

Yeah, I first noticed the problem with 1408, but I figured it was just the movie being dumb and didn't really take notice.

I set all the individual types of media in the auto-run menu to 'prompt me for action' and turned off my antivirus. It's still the same when I insert the DVD - it clickity clacks, and explorer slows down (the My Computer window takes a looong time to load), then eventually unfucks itself and Windows decides there is no DVD in my drive.

It lists it as a CD drive as opposed to a CD/DVD or DVD-RW in My Computer, and I have a sneaking suspicion that Alcohol 120% or Daemontools might have messed things up.

edit: What do I do with that firmware file? It's a .da3 and when I try to open it it just opens in Wordpad.

Try booting up in safe mode or just command prompt and seeing if you can view the contents of the drive.

Same thing happens but in lower resolution.

Heh... I don't know why I found that comical...

Anyway that does sound quite a bit more like a fuck'd drive than some interference from something else (I know those fake drive programs mess w/ drivers etc, but I wouldn't suspect them to mess w/ existing drives so hardcore). Anyway I'm out of ideas...

Blu-Ray ROM drives are apparently coming way down in price (OEM $120ish), time for an upgrade? :)

Yeah, I think I'll probably just go buy an external instead of continuing to mess with all this.

Appreciate the help though.
