Yep, I got a new place with my girlfriend.
Two bedroom and a pretty fair deal.
Unfortunately, we came into this thing with 0 to no furniture and out dated shit. Sure, we've scrapped together enough for a futon and a set of shelves in the living room and the gaming room is slowly being built, but one problem remains.
I know shit about any sort of tv's.
I was thinking of getting a nice 32 inch HD flat screen and a tv stand, but have no idea what brands are good and what deals are good and where I should look for the best deals. I've looked at the usual suspects (Wal*Mart ect.) and have access to tax free New Hamphire, but I'm wondering what you guys would suggest. Thanks.

"Girlfriend"?
Just because this is the internet, doesn't mean you HAVE to lie.

Find you a floor model LCD at Best Buy or someplace equivalent and pick it up cheap. It'll last you a few years until you can scrimp up enough to buy something larger and newer.

Worst mistake I've ever made is having girlfriends move in with me.

Hah, I can understand where you guys are coming from.
This is sort of like an Ozzy / Sharon type deal as well as a regular relationship. Just subtract the music aspect.

Avoid Poloroid. Look for a 1080i or 1080p max res (avoid 720p models- blow). Make sure you have at least 2 HDMI inputs. Go to BestBuy, find an open-box model, save 200 bucks :D.

When I was shopping for one I found that Samsung seemed to have the best bang for my buck, but this was right before Christmas so it may have just been holiday deals.

I would highly recommend a DLP or 3LCD model, you say you were going to get a TV Stand anyway, so why spend the premium on a wall mountable TV? This will also make 1080p much more affordable, use the extra money to get a really good surround sound system, it won't wow people when they see your setup, it'll wow them when they experience it (nothing worse than seeing someone have a nice wall mounted TV and then it sounds flat). And a 32" 1080p LCD is going to be around the cost of a 46" 1080 DLP (so it'll be 16" thick instead of 6" ...)
As for furniture, do you have a chain that has a "scratched and dinged" section? There is a large retailer in the NorthEast (Bobs, most obnoxious commercials ever) that has "the pit"... you can get furniture for half off and it's like... couches w/ a scratch on the back (it's up against the wall, who cares).

I went to a Bob's furntiture (I live in Lowell, MA) and didn't notice a "scratched and dinged" section. Do they all have sections like that or maybe just extremely localized ones?

I'm in Massachusetts. I wish there was a closer locations :-(
From what the floor associate showed me at Bob's, it was nice, but I just don't want to spend over $1k on a living room set that looks halfway decent. Jordon's Furniture, while nice, just seemed ludicurously over priced.

Bobs has really good prices, and good financing options if you need it, I got my couch/chair there really cheap (infact it was the cheapest leather set and it was, to me, the most comfortable). As for the Pit section (friend of mine got some coffee/end tables, which later he gave to me, and he got a nice reclining couch) only a few of the locations have it, and if you want something nice (vs something quick) you'd probably have to visit the place a few times over the course of a couple months.

I'm moving too and just bought new furniture. I went to the Cort Clearance Center (www.cort.com (http://www.cort.com)) and bought the stuff they had previously rented out. They rent to upscale customers, usually corporate rentals and they have different deals where they'll package a whole apartment for you. All the furniture is really clean and the total for all the stuff I got amounted to what I would have spent on the better stuff on craigslist, without having to go to 10 different places for it, and it all matches.
Just bought TVs yesterday, too. I usually hate Circuit City, but I found two open box TVs, a 37" and a 32" LCD HD and I'm having them recalibrate them, clean them and deliver them, which also includes a basic setup. The 37" is 1080p. Make sure you have them recalibrate any open box item, and get the service plan, because the TVs in the store are set to be the brightest and the bulbs burn out faster and they use more energy.

DLP has the highest quality HD image bar-none and is coming in cheaper inch for inch than LCD's and plasma. For me, it was about having a wider viewing aspect. The DLP was washing out way before the LCD and in my living-room that's an issue.
Definitely check out surround sound receivers. Wal-mart has some nice cheap options. I can cope with standard definition, but not without digital surround.

Okay... just stating that pretty much anybody who posts on these boards... has time on their hands, so TVs are par for the course.

I'm all about having something nice rather than something quickly. My new job allows me a certain amount of financial freedom in upping the standard of quality of the stuff I buy, it's just right now I have to start from the ground up, which is always a bit price :-/

PS: Or TV can be for somebody that wants to have different options of entertainment.
