So, after my router, I was having issues and I thought it was that! NOPE! The piece of shit D-Link they sold me when I got my service was dropping me and not connecting right at all. But I thought it was because of this N router! So I went out and bought me a Motorola Surfboard! BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!

All modems should be Motorola Surfboards.

All modems should be Motorola Surfboards.

This statement is true. Both Circuit City and Best Buy were trying to get me to buy a 2 in 1 piece of shit thing for more money. Think Linksys and Gateway for makes...

I just checked my cable modem that Roadrunner gave me, and turns out it's also a Surfboard.

Sweet.

I'm at work, I'd assume a T1 or something.

Sweet ass connection at work. At the last place I was at, we only had crappy business road runner.

Yup.

I miss my Motorola Surfboard with a passion. One damn thing Bloomberg was able to do with CableVee' without any problems; and with really, really nice & swift implementation, cheap service, easy fixes + updates... Damn good conglomeration of C-Vision and Motorola.

t1 is only 1.544 Mbps

Looks like a slow-ass t3.

Bobmuhthol

With a ping of 181 ms, and the fact that you're using a free service/server to measure your bandwidth, I wouldn't say that it's a terribly slow T3 line.

Only problem is those surfboards go dead about every 6 months. Just run it back to the cable co. and they'll swap you for a new one.

I've had the same Surfboard for at least 7 years.

Holy fuck. Upgrade and/or trade in that bastard.

Honestly, I don't know if the plastic exterior makes that much of a difference, but after 7 years it has to.

No it does not at the moment and I don't get why not. Usually it's absolutely retarded fast.

Is RR for some reason slower than Comcast? My tests have been much, much slower than everyone elses.

Or is it because this is a cheapo computer?

Road runner, also... but it's a wireless connection... from somewhere...

Considering t3 should be ~45mbps, I'd say that 30 is pretty slow.

Bobmuhthol
02-22-2008, 08:02 PM
Sure, 30 is slow compared to 45, but again, it's 75% efficiency from a free server. That by no means indicates the max download speed on the connection.

<<Is RR for some reason slower than Comcast? My tests have been much, much slower than everyone elses.

Computer shouldn't make a huge difference if it doesn't suck royally. Chances are everyone else is paying for a significantly faster connection. I have 5 Mbps cable if it makes you feel any better.

A good bit slower than most.

EDIT: So I looked at the speed rates for what looks like my area.

Comcast: 8975 kb/s
RR Business: 5032 kb\s
RR Regular: 4610
Plus some assorted other providers.

Looks like Comcast in general is faster than even RR business.

<<Looks like Comcast in general is faster than even RR business.>>

You don't get "Comcast cable" as an internet service, you get a specific package. The average Comcast subscriber has a better internet package than the average Road Runner subscriber; and businesses that go with Road Runner are very obviously not looking for a fast connection. That statistic doesn't really mean anything.

Okay, I just looked at Time Warner's site, and I guess they only have 5 Mbps and 8 Mbps connections for Road Runner. Comcast offers 6 Mbps or 16 Mbps (in the next town over from me, which is rural). Comcast's numbers are higher because they're supposed to be, but that doesn't make Comcast a better provider unless you want more than 8 Mbps.

This from home, over my wireless router, so I'm pretty sure it's limited. I don't feel like booting up the desktop or plugging in downstairs.

C-Vision and Motorola.

Re-reading this, what I meant was the OptOnline triple package w/ Motorola hardware + CableVision in NYC. That was fast as fuck. Think vat-of-McDonald's-greasy-lightning fast, y'all. Or don't. I really don't care, honestly.

K, this is the home setup I got with the Comcast Tripleplay thinger... Seems a lot better than I'd have thought it was. Now if I wasn't running a computer that's like, 6 years old and has no modifications to it whatsoever... I might be able to run cool games. :(
