So clearly this is my fault for tossing chests to reduce encumberance, but this should probably be fixed at some point in the future.
Also, not sure this is the right folder, but here goes:
>put chest in tube
>
There appears to be an item or items attached to the container you are throwing away that is either scripted or of significant value.
If you wish to continue, throw the item away again within fifteen seconds.
You toss your thanot chest into the lava tube.
After a moment, you hear a faint sizzle from the lava tube.
Now, obviously this pisses me off for a number of reasons, but I'm mostly pissed off at myself for not being patient enough to find someone to open it (or even going to npc locksmith). Any thoughts on steps to take to at least remedy the situation so it doesn't happen to anyone else?

Do you not get why it's like that in the first place?

why it's like what? it gave me a warning saying that there was something valuable in the chest and IF i wanted to throw it away, to throw it away AGAIN in the next 15 seconds. then it just threw it away anyway.

That was never a problem for me before. It's a bug, and you could try reporting it. Not much of a safety measure if it would throw the item before you could change your mind. Maybe it's as impatient as you are.

It says there is something scripted or significant value in a box even if it's an herb in it. I wouldn't be too worried NocturnalRob.

s>put leaf in ches
You put some acantha leaf in your maoral chest.

With a casual motion, Kyleeannia twirls her lockpick around her index finger, catching it between thumb and forefinger before applying it to the lock of a sturdy fel coffer...
Then...CLICK! It opens!
s>l in ches
In the maoral chest you see the following:
1 Herbs: some acantha leaf
s>
Kyleeannia offers you a sturdy fel coffer. Click ACCEPT to accept the offer or DECLINE to decline it. The offer will expire in 30 seconds.
s>put ches in bar

Kyleeannia attaches a sea green vaalin lockpick to a chain-link keyring.

If you're on Teras, you should have enough trading ranks to get Sneaky to open all of your boxes for you.
Save and sell the husks.
Extremely Important Edit: If you're Dwarf or Giant, or human, etc., get some trading ranks. If not, you can always start saving assloads of boxes outside the gazebo.

I got the same error messages throwing away empty boxes in the landing yesterday. They sold for 22 silvers each at the pawnshop....

Silver, gold and mithril critter containers should sell for more than their counterparts. I still save the bulk load in my backpack (+ other wearable container of mine if it's a lot of boxes.) I might even only place crap gems from my critter box and leave the rest inside my trunks (inside my back) when I'm in an area that has pickpockets.
I try to avoid using the EMPTY verb because it makes it look live you've got something to hide. If someone wants to increase redhand mechanics on coins and zircons, that's fine by me.

To clarify - if it matters - I got the error message when attempting to throw away a bunch of empty boxes that were inside another empty box.
Since last posting, I confirmed that throwing away a single empty box does not produce the error message, so I am guessing that the message is displayed when a box containing ANYTHING is tossed.
