View Full Version : What is your favorite restaurant chain and why?

I’m interested in hearing what people’s favorite sit-down dinner restaurant chains are and why they like them.

Ruby Tuesday’s, Friday’s, Bennigan’s, Denny’s, Outback, and the list is a mile long. What makes one of them your favorite? The quality of the food, the portion sizes, unique menu, the deals they offer, the atmosphere, the service, low price point for the value, the total dining experience?

Do you prefer a locally owned and operated establishment? Why? What about the independent do you like above the chain other than just wanting to spend your money in your own community?

Hmm..

Rafferty's is my favorite place to go for steak - the filets are ungodly smoked deliciousness. I LOVE Boston Market's sides. Creamed spinach, stuffing, green beans, taters n gravy.  I also really like P.F. Chang's hot 'n sour soup and spring rolls.

I'm not a fan of many locally owned joints in Atlanta, but this place is really good:
http://www.brickstorepub.com/menu.html

The pierogies and the pretzels are awesomesauce.

In NY, I prefer locally owned places for the most part. Deli's, pizza, Chinese, etc.

Actually I don't mind the airport here so much. It's huge, but I always have less problems/wait here than at LGA. I miss ISP though.. that airport was the best. Small, not too busy, decent snack stands, didn't stink. Tickets cost like 2x as much as flying through LGA though :(

However, I can understand that catching a connection in Atlanta would bite. It's the busiest airport in the world and it's huge. I hope you didn't think, "Oh forget the train, i'll just walk to my other terminal, it can't be far!" lol

Anyway, fly Airtran and say hello to nonstop flights :D

Oh, I lied. There is one "restaurant" native to Atlanta that I really, really love. And that's The Varsity. It's greasy fast food at its FINEST, and i'm really not a huge fan of fast food.

Really any of those will do just fine whilst drunk but I think we're talking about the whole shebang here.

Of the ones he listed:

(And none of them really do it for me. I love the bread at Outback as well as the side salads. I watch a lot of NCAA there.)

Ruby's is shit ball.
Friday's is half shit ball. Great late night bar scene and 2 for 1 apps.
Hmmm Ihop no. Perkins so/so. Appleby's can suck a dick.
Denny's is a diner .. which to me is good stuff. Moons over my hammy. I love breakfast food.
Bennigan's has a quick and half way decent lunch menu.
Hooter's isn't terrible.
Wing House pretty damned good.
Pete and Shorty's tasty diner type food and lil white castle style burgers.
Muggs and Juggs great.

I like chili's new smaller portions and a few of their items. Their 2 4 1 all day drink specials are crap however... less than 10oz drinks :(

I mostly prefer local restaurants. They're pretty damned good. Gyro King. Leo's Italian. Cricketer's is prolly one of my faves. Great thai place down the road as well. Lots of greek places around that are can't miss.

Basically I guess I like local establishments the most. Oh and Sweet Tomato's is pretty awesome too.

For the real deal I like Shula's ... Lee Roy Selmon's... Burns... Cheescake factory isn't terrible. Sam Seltzer's has an awesome prime rib.

Shit I've got about 15 others flooding my mind as well. I didn't realize how much I like to eat out once in a while.

In the grand scheme of things all chains start out as locals. What I am trying to pin-point with this discussion is... what makes that happen?

What makes Mom & Pop’s go national?

With so many variables involved in the food service industry I’m going out on a limb to venture it could possibly be boiled down to one thing for the average American on an average income... consistency.

Getting what you want, at the hour you want, in the clothes you want, for as much as you want to pay that warms your belly, makes you smile, and does not break your bank every time you visit?

I think it's pretty much "Who-gets-to-inherit-daddy's-already-famous-and-seen-by-the-public-eye fastfood company"/The Feudal System U.S.A. vs. somehow getting stuck on "repeat" while Stairmastering step one and two of the American Dream; while playing the role of chef, manager and delivery boy/girl/boygirl at the same time.

Either you're McDonalds The III, or Bush The II/I, or you aren't achieving:

consistency

.

Ultimately, fuck opinions, because there's very little else if anything other than marketing, IMHO, that makes a competent human brain, 21st Century A.D., actually believe (rationally) that one fast food chain's plastic, industrial animal-blender'd shit actually tastes different than the next.

I believe that when it comes to liquor. One whiskey tastes the same as another to me. You are right, people BUY brands. It could even be said for our current political race.

Without doubt, you have a point... but I think your point is past the initial stage of success. What kind of advertising budget does an independent have against Mickey D’s? None. Yet (great American success story here) independents go chain all the time. Why?

No waffle fries that I've seen. What I really like is that I can customize my burger practically anyway I want, with almost any ingredient.

Generally, like a good majority of the east coast population, I don't like chain restaurants, but if I'm somewhere away from home, I like:

Don Pablo's (they have a great chicken salad and chips and salsa please extra spicy)
Chili's (again chips and salsa extra spicy please)
Morton's Steaks

Pretty much anywhere I can get salty chips and salsa extra spicy, but I will look for local places first.

Chevy's for my fake mexican food, just can't beat it, good substitute for ChiChis.

BW3s for bar food, although they stopped serving those pizza eggroll type things they used to, and those were ridiculously good.

I like pretty much all of the standard chains, with special honors to Outback for the Bloomin Onion and Ruby Tuesday's for the semi-decent salad bars. The only chains I don't really care for are Applebees and Bennigans. Ihops rock for the late-night thing and I have one within walking distance too,.

As far as a local joint goes, there's this place called Mario's Pizza House down the street from me and they have what is commonly reviewed as terrible food, but because they're open 24 hours, they get slammed late at night after last calls. They have (IMO) awesomely greasy pizza and subs which are perfect for notching it down after a night of partying. I even stopped by there last night on the way home, hehe.

Ruth's Chris is about the only national chain I can mention. Almost every chain I've been to isn't consistent between locations .... or they'll change something in the menu or preparation that turns out to be a big disappointment.

Applebee's is a good example. They changed suppliers or steak prep a few years ago and now it isn't even worth going to.

Ruth's aside ... I'd have to throw LaBamba's in there.

New Jersey is home to approximate 10 diners per resident all of which are nearly identical yet whenever you ask someone they will insist that their diner is the best. That all being said, I'd argue that Tops Diner is the best.

Boo, closest one is 20+ miles away. I hate how all the decent chains are OUTSIDE of the Atlanta perimeter. I dunno why they don't set up shop INSIDE Atlanta, unless it's because rent is too high. Who the fuck knows. But it stinks that we have to drive at least 20 minutes to go to the majority of decent chains.

We tried Steak n Ale for linner today... I think someone on here mentioned the salad bar being a good thing. The salad bar was okay, but otherwise I was not impressed at all. Steak & Ale is one of my long time favorites, and yes, the wing back chairs (ambiance) is great when you want a cozy steak dinner with your significant other.

There was only one other place in Houston that had a better steak menu and that was Old San Francisco Steak House on Westheimer but its gone now :( The ambiance there was phenominal, especially when they put the girl on the swing above the bar.

I also forgot to add The Great Caruso for dining + entertainment. Mary Hartmann Black's father started that restaurant which has singers from the Houston Grand Opera sing for dinner performances. Its a great place to take groups for parties.

I used to like Outback for their shrimp appetizer and ribeye steak, but then it dawned on me that I can make my own skrimps and ribeyes on the grill thats 1000x better at less than half the price. Duh.

I do get a craving for southwest eggrolls from time to time so I will visit (insert just about any chain’s name here) to get some.

Bertucci’s has pretty damn good pizza for the price. I’ll indulge once in a while. But the local pizza place blows it away by miles. In fact, the best pizza place in my area opened another location. Its on the franchise watch list and I bet it won’t be as good if it does go chain.

Another place that has a few locations and is pretty good is a no-frills burger joint. Order at one window, pick it up when your number is called. Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Bacon Cheeseburger, Dog, Cheese Dog, Bacon Dog, two sizes of fries cajun or plain and sodas is all they offer. Sounds cheap, right? I had a Cheeseburger, regular fries and a soda for $9 and change!

My favorite chain (actually I don’t even know if its a chain) of all time is El Phenix in the Dallas area. They do all the tex-mex classics to the T. Stuffed tacos, chicken enchiladas with sour cream sauce, refried beans, chips and salsa... comfort food at a very very reasonable price.

But why? Why do you keep going there and spending your money? The food? The experience? The price? What?

I'm going to actually answer your question and try to avoid you having a hernia or something.

Chains are ok because yes, they're consistent. When I went to Chilis in Detroit, I knew I was going to get the same thing I could get here in Richmond. When we stop at a Quizno's off I-95 in North Carolina, I know I can get the same things pretty much as I can at the one up the street from where I work.

I love going to local restaurants, though, especially here in Richmond. We've got so many good locally-owned places, and a lot of them (especially the ones in the city proper) have decor and food to match the surrounding neighborhood. And some of them have things that I just can't get at a chain, like Capital Ale House that flat-out serves their fries with flavored mayo (yummmm)...or the atmosphere and home-cooked feeling at Mexico and La Siesta restaurants (both locally owned here, and tied for my favorite Mexican food). When I travel, I try to find non-chain restaurants. Sure, it's a gamble, but it helps me get a taste of the new place (pun intended).

Some of my favorites:

Chains:
*Pizzaria Uno (LOVE their deep-dish pizza)
*O'Charley's (one word: rolls)
*Ruby Tuesday (for the burgers)
*Chick-Fil-A (best chicken sandwich from a fast food place)
*Arby's (beef 'n' cheddar and Market Fresh sandwiches and curly fries)
*Cheesecake Factory and Copeland's Cheesecake Bistro (dinner items are ok, but the cheesecakes from these places...nnnnnuuuummmm)
*and my very favorite, Texas de Brazil: all you can eat meat...a "salad bar" that can easily be a meal in itself...chocolate fudge cake drenched with Bailey's Caramel (a suggestion from our waitress the last time we were there)...and awesome service from waitstaff ready to refill your drink and meat servers that aren't too pushy when you just need a break for digestion

Locally Owned:
*Yen Ching Chinese (just really good food, and now it's right up the street from my house, and the people who work there are incredibly friendly)
*Mexico Restaurant (they've got about 6 locations around here now, making them a chain I guess, but it's still family run and tastes a lot like how I figure my Mexican food made at home might taste if I had a clue about what I was doing...and they're fast!)
*La Siesta (another family-owned place, slightly different atmosphere from Mexico and the food is a little different 'cause the family that owns La Siesta is from a different region of Mexico than the family that owns Mexico Restaurant)
*Capital Ale House (see the mention of the fries above.. plus they've got great sandwiches and burgers, a really good polenta and mozzerella appetizer, and a beer menu bigger than the food menu)
*The Thai Room (a nice, basic selection of Thai food with really good home-made ice cream)
*Bottoms Up Pizza (a new favorite, but man is their pizza awesome...their sourdough crust makes a huge difference)
*The Border Chophouse and Grill (just 'cause they're the only place I know that serves sweet potato fries...mmmmmmm.....)
*Ukrop's (ok, so this is a supermarket, really, but they've been serving the BEST fried chicken in their deli for years, and in the past 10 years or so have added a ton of other things like pannini, fresh-rolled sushi-type stuff, and other comfort foods that change on a daily basis, all made in the on-site kitchen)
*and local to DC, Ireland's Four Provinces (really, really good traditional Irish food, and I love the atmosphere of the downtown DC location)

...

Dammitall, I'm hungry now.

This sounds like Five Guys Burgers and Fries, a chain from the DC area that's come into Richmond in the past few years. They're pretty pricey for a burger, fries and a soda...but man, it's good, and it fills you up (the small fries are enough for 2 people to split, easy).

I have to say it was the food. When we were in Europe we were a little tired of the local food. sausage sausage sausage.

We decided to have lunch at a Friday's in Prague. The Jack Daniels shrimp and the appetizers were exactly like the one around the corner from my house. It was a nice break from the local fare.

Fuddrucker's. Great burgers and hot dogs with condiment stations so that you can put whatever the hell you want on it in any way you want. God I miss that place.

I love Cracker Barrel. I love the country atmosphere, the little shop in the front, and their hash brown casserole. I also have a hard time getting people to stop there when we travel since there aren't any near me... ever!

Waffle house gives me um, abnormal bowel functions :/

I can't believe I left off FAT Burger. That place is awesome. any time I'm on the west coast I make a point to have at least one meal at FAT Burger. Though a couple years ago I did find one in Tampa so maybe they are making their way East.

Oh hell, I think I was supposed to go there while in LA. Forgot :/ I remember trying Carl's Jr. out there, and it wasn't super bad. The jalapenos were actually spicy enough!!! (imo)

I just checked and they have made their way east. Apparently I have one 5 minutes from my house, and will be trying it for the first time tonight.
