My daughters b/f was sent off to Job Corps(basically it was that or he had to live in the streets) & since it's 3 hours from anyone he knows they're both freaking out over it.(I'm thinking it's a teen 'drama' thing but he's usually a pretty laid back kid so who knows).
Just wondered if anyone had experiences with it or had any info to share. Looked at the website but not as if they're going to say 'You'll share a small prison cell type room with 7 other guys & graffiti on the walls" or something on the site.

My fiance said he heard it's something like boot camp. He doesn't have any first hand experience with it, but a friend of his was looking into going there quite a few years back.
Edit to add: He does know that sometimes people are sent there via court order, so it can't be that great if it's used as a punishment, heh.

My sister had been in Job Corps for about two years, working through a couple of trades, before leaving. From what I understood, it's the college equivalent of an alternate level high school. Mind you, this doesn't mean it's purely for those who have failed, or somehow ruined their lives before they began. As long as the guy sticks to the right crowd, the worst that will happen to him is potential laughter in the public showers. (Note: this likely varies considerably depending on the area of the center, so take that into consideration.)

Yes, because alienating her from me by talking crap about him(when I actually like him 100x better than her other b/fs) & telling a her who to date is sure to work
@ the other replies, thank you. I know he wasn't being sent away for being bad, his mother didn't want him to go to school here due to several bus stop shootings in their area so his father stepped up to the plate & found him a place at Job Corp rather than let him be a h.s. drop out.
I told him he has to do well if he wishes to come spend any time here afterward so hopefully it's a bit of incentive.

Asshats aside, he could come out with enough training to jump into a twenty dollar an hour entry-level position in a bunch of different things. Depends on what he gets into. If he isn't a massive stoner, or drinker, he'll make it through just fine. The one up here in MN has game rooms, a couple workout areas, recreation areas, picnic areas, all that stoof. So yeah, as long as he doesn't get homesick and leave (like a shockingly high amount do) he'll be in a decent position once he's out.

Why was he sent to a job corps?

His mother didn't want him in the school system where he is, too dangerous & she didn't have the transportation & funds to pay tuition to take him to an out of district school system.
He's a really good kid, stayed with me for a month before my move to NC & helped with the move. He has a good head on his shoulders too for the most part(he is still a teen), hopefully this pans out for him, not sure going from where he was to Detroit is the best but keeping my fingers crossed.

That's dumb (the social divide.) I hope he beats up some white people.

You let your teenage daughter's boyfriend live with you for a month? That's not a recipe for disaster or anything.
Do you prefer Maury or Springer?

Considering my daughter was 180 miles away at her father's house I don't think it was too much of an issue, thanks for tossing that in though :club:

I had a few techs at one of my previous jobs that went through the job corps.
Like PB&J said, it's college like from the explanations I heard. Not everyone is there because they have to be ... most are there taking advantage of an opportunity they wouldn't normally get.
Looking at the job corps page ... the vocations vary depending on what campus you're sent to. I've seen everything from janitorial to jobs in the medical field on many of the campus web pages.
It could very well turn out to be a great opportunity for him depending on what he chooses for a vocation. Either of the techs I mentioned were 6-10 years out of the program and making 43 and 57k respectively as machine techs.
