Attend one of the MS launch events in the next few months, you'll get Windows Server 2008 for free. (I know this won't solve your problem, but I thought I'd mention it)

You're spot on man/girl. I basically got completely fed up with the shirt and tie and office environment and GOT THE FUCK OUT. It will crush you if you stay. Well me anyways. I was never more miserable after 7 years under fluorescents.

I basically did nothing but go fishing for months after I left the last office job.

Coincidentally I'm looking into cabling as well. As most IT peeps know the shit already it should be an easy transition. The phone/cable companies are hiring big now days.... and no fluorescent lights.

That's why I'm so happy with my job. Instead of getting shoehorned into a IT department at some big company, I'm at a small company, working on projects that are interesting to me. I was really lucky to get this as my first job out of (well, actually I'm still finishing up) college. Very flexible hours, including the ability to work at home. For the interview I wore a suit, which I soon found out was not a part of the culture here at all (my future boss interviewed me while wearing Crocs), so I decided to dress it down and wear just a jacket, no tie to the offer with the president of the company and was still over dressed.

Now that I'm working here every day, I rarely get more dressed up than a t-shirt and jeans, unless I have to meet face to face with a client (rare), which means I have to wear a collared shirt and some slacks. In case you haven't noticed, my job is so intense that I have way too much time to post on these boards and for some reason they still pay me way more than I deserve. Of course, since I found a critical security exploit (by reading Slashdot) in our product yesterday, they probably think I'm worth it.

If you have a hardon for pulling cable, skip the low voltage data stuff and learn the be a real electrician. You'll get paid a lot more and probably find more work. Unless you live in a "right-to-work" aka "right to get fucked by your employer" state, such as Florida.
