Looks like they have some tentative info up. Dates are looking like August 7-10. Anyone planning on going?
August is the hardest month to plan in the summer, but I'm hoping.

Hmm, maybe. Might be fun since I haven't gone for a while.

I'll probably go since I'm likely going to miss VegasCon. I won't make any specific plans until at least May though, if it's not until August.

No for me -- I'll be busy with the new baby. But I will live vicariously through all of the drunken pictures heh.

Babies are more important anyways!
You already know that Ollie is determined to get me there by any means possible, so...
I'll be there. :D

but will you be trying to make babies while you are there?
There will be no baby making, no.

Maybe! I can't go to Vegascon this year, because I'm going to visit relatives instead..yay relatives.

Don't any of you feel embarrassed at going to one of these conventions? It sounds similar to a Star Trek convention.
It's more of an expensive social gathering. It's fun. Why would I feel embarrassed? Because I'm going to hang out and drink with other people who play the same game?

There is no weird clothing to dress up in...
Unless you are talking about the one day they have a costume party...
Everyone else just wears normal shit.

Everyday's a costume day for Cap'n Dhask!
I know, I met him at LazyCon..

The costume party must've been the subject of the pictures I've seen/
Do you call each other by their GemStone or their real name?
I don't call anyone by their character names on AIM, unless of course I don't know.

Nothing wierd about it.
I met some cool folks, drank a ton of deathrum and only dressed up once for a wedding that was happening.
Was a good time and I cannot wait for this year.

I know some people who've dressed up for more than the specific costume events...but they're the type of people who'd do that kind of thing anyway. Most of my pictures show folks in regular clothes.
There was one year (2003 I think) when there was a fancy wedding being held at the same hotel that Saturday afternoon, and some of those folks gave us odd glances at first and then came over to party with us that night. I think that was the same year something like a morticians' convention started the sunday SimuCon ended... or their convention ended the Wednesday before SimuCon officially started (and a bunch of folks start getting in)...something weird like that.. and they were quite intrigued by it all. Go figure.
But seriously, SimuCon is my long weekend to hang out with friends...party too much...drink WAAAY too much...and sleep way too little. And I forget about all the other junk I have to deal with here at home.
Anyone who thinks someone would be embarassed to go to SimuCon obviously hasn't been to one.

Ok I'm a geek and have been to almost all of the Simucons but I have to agree here; I don't care who you are or how cool you think you are, if you can't have fun at a Simucon you truely are pathetic. And that's coming from a geek.

The wedding was real this year between Boomsplat and Jassrania's player. I dressed because I was playing the recorder in it.
there was a martial arts demonstration, a Q/A time on the state of Elanthia and upcoming things. Round tables about all areas of GS. Lots of games going on at any one time.
A bunch of raffles for items including a lap top and a wii.
And just a bunch of time to relax. I know the different groups got to speak together at dinners or picnics (mentors etc.)

It's honestly more about sitting around talking and drinking. Hell, a lot of people end up skipping half the seminars just to socialize.

Did the mentors sit separate from anyone else and whisper conspirator-like tones?
Seriously, if I ever went to one of these things, I would never go as my mentor character.

That's dead on. I stopped going to most of the seminars after my second or third year except maybe for something special like the ranger forums. I'd do the keynote dinners (since I'd already paid for the food) and the special events like the weddings, but other than that, it was just being social. I've been like nine times now and I've never dressed up once. I've made some great friends, half of which I didn't even know in-game, or like me, don't actually play anymore but still go to see old friends and have a good time.
I think the weddings were legit. If they weren't technically legit, they were between people who were married in RL some other way.
The mentors do usually have a special lunch or something, but that's not official and is organized by the players (I think).

Well my main characters are both mentors.
Yes we had a luncheon and it was a ton of fun. Jurican and Eridal organized it.
Mentors are not secrets we do not hide who we are. It was not a big deal to have her name on my tag since she is one of my main characters.

So, what do you do besides having costume parties, weddings (whether they're fake, real, or a blend of the two is anyone's guess), and seminars on game mechanics?
Hmm.. I've been to...6 official SimuCons and the unofficial gathering for AoH (Alliance of Heroes, one of Simu's 2 tiny games that almost know one knows about, shame for them) that was held when SimuCon 2006 was canned. And in all that, I know of only... 2 weddings happening at a SimuCon I attended: Boomsplat & Jassrainna's players last year (totally legit, legal and all), and some other folks in 2000 that I don't know. So weddings are rare.
And...seminars? Muh? Ok, so I've been playing AoH longer than I've played GS so have always gone as a registered AoHer and hung out with those folks more because I know them better (but I'm going to hang out with more GS players this year, I swear!).. and, well, when SimuCon had time for official seminars, we mostly held them to keep things legit. Last year, when GS and DR had their roundtable discussions, the 8 of us there for AoH all got together in someone's room and had a quick "Square Bed Discussion" to cover whatever we hadn't yet babbled about...and then we did something that looked like napping, seriously. (I have pictures, so it really happened. (http://flickr.com/photos/asile13/))
Oh yeah, and if you're more into gaming than just sitting in the hotel lobby/bar (or wherever else you find) and socializing and drinking, Simu sets up a hospitality/game room with a few computers (old, but they seem to work) and lots of games. The only time I walked in there last year and didn't see a few folks playing something was...um...I think it was sometime between 11am and 1pm when I finally woke up and went looking for people before grabbing lunch and starting the socializing thing again.
Oh yeah, and one other thing: in past years folks have planned various side trips around St. Louis, like the Zoo or Six Flags or something. I know I'd tried to plan a trip to the Arch last year, but that got canned when one of the trams was shut down--most of us who planned to go got a little nervous and played it safe (and gave ourselves more time for some precious sleep).
