I think it is because the forums have been slow. Politics are an easy way to argue/debate rile people up. It is also around voting time so that also puts a fire under people.

On a forum, such as you suggested, there's a great deal of noise and the collective education/intellect pool drops to that of a class of third graders.

Eh, that's not really true. I think a lot of people I may not vote the same as or be registered the same as make good points. It helps to get a steady dose of what the opposite viewpoint feels every day. I know it personally makes me more knowledgeable about the issues and more open-minded. I laugh at my posts from like 3-4 years ago (although I get some slack for also being real young and naive).
