Stupid question here as I've never been much of a merchant chaser. I've got 2 items I'd like to have a couple of words taken out, and wondering the quickest/cheapest way of doing it. I'm not premium, though I guess I could probably have the work done through alteration scrolls...

Merchants lately have been a dime a dozen. Depending on the word and item, shouldn't be that hard to find one by checking the calender.
