Just wanted to make an other thread since the Saddam one is about .. eh Saddam.
Hehe
Seriously, I really really give a big  to the US. They succeeding into going to war, for WHATEVER reason (in the end, it's good for you and me since):
1) cheaper petrole
2) safer since a «rebel» country is now secured
3) give a fair warning to other «rebel» countries that if they don't follow the UN-US policy, they'll be invaded, broken and leaders will be captured
4) Continued its reputation of the «cow-boy» of Earth (police, whatever you name it)
The us lost a moral war by the two towers being destroyed, but won again in the long run?
I'm glad to live close to the US border and feel proud to be in agreement with them!

Anyone who thinks the US sucks is simply put a fucking moron. The US helps countries be countries. The US as screwed up may be at time, is one of the straightest countries. Only a few other countries may be a better economy, but those countries have not nearly as much power as the US.

Well, Stray, the Koreans...they really don't like the Japanese. The second they get a nuclear warhead, it'll probably be heading right at Japan. That, or being sold to a terrorist faction...one that probably doesn't like the US.

Ah so you're against selling weapons. Isn't that what you did during the first few years of WW2? To the nazi's? Oh yes it is, isn't it.
Is that good enough to invoke Godwin's Law and end this?
Xcalibur
12-14-2003, 01:28 PM
Godwin's Law prov. [Usenet] "As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one." There is a tradition in many groups that, once this occurs, that thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress. Godwin's Law thus practically guarantees the existence of an upper bound on thread length in those groups. However there is also a widely- recognized codicil that any intentional triggering of Godwin's Law in order to invoke its thread-ending effects will be unsuccessful.

Incorrect. The United States, prior to world war 2, sold weapons to germany, yes, but not nearly as many weapons as Britain did. Once Poland was invaded, the United States sold no weapons to Germany, or Japan. In fact, Britain was getting its ass kicked in the war until the US came in and saved them. And France, what of their mighty army? they lasted all of a day. The English navy? sunk. The English air force? useless. very much the same as today really.

Nuclear weapon sales is a whole different spectrum there chap. You can't compare it with anything else because nuclear weapons do damage and kill civilians in a manner that would change the world forever, and anyone with a half of brain would not allow the production of these weapons by a renegade nation with obvious evil agendas.
Oh, and as Tamral said, we didn't sell any weapons to Germany or the axis powers after the start of the war.. We actually pretty much gave England an open checkbook, which is the only reason they were able to survive for a long period... then as we all know, the USA had to step in.

sounds a bit before WWII my friend
"The New Collossus"
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at the sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost, to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Nah, not so much one of the best things about the US has been our ability to take the best things from other places and incorporate them into our own culture.
Unlike France we are not scared of taking things from other places and using them if they work.

The 300 Spartans did hold out for a long time so that the Athenians could escape because at Thermoyplae, it was narrow so they could defend it easily and they were better fighters one-on-one than Xerxes' army. Leonidas, the general of the Spartan Equals, became immortalized that day. If they hadn't been betrayed by someone who told Xerxes how to bypass the mountain and attack from behind, they might have held them off even longer. I think it was in 380 BCE, not 100%

It was Philip who defeated the Sacred Band of Thebes at the battle of Chaironeiae. He was so impressed with how well they fought that he had them buried where they fell. The monument still stands.

I suspect that the United States would have eventually entered the war, but without a first attack, the public wouldn't have supported the move, thus resulting in a less sincere effort and maybe even a stalemale/loss on the Allies' side.
Woodrow Wilson convinced the people of the United States to enter WWI because, however terrible the sacrifice may be, this would be the war to end all wars.
Naturally, when WW2 sprang about (Which was ironically a direct circumstance of the partitioning of Europe after WWI.) the United States public opinion of joining the war was very low. They had, after all, just sent a number of men to die thirty years earlier.
Churchill made constant visits to the US, trying to convince Roosevelt to enter the fray, but the public support just wasn't strong enough. This obviously changed after the attack on Pearl Harbor. I side with the tinfoil hatters on the theory that Pearl Harbor could have been prevented, but wasn't due to the necesarry need of public support to enter the war.

USA at that time believed in Isolationism
With that belief they had no reason to join the war, if they were going to join, why didn't they join when every damn country in europe was asking them to help.
They didn't start till Japan Bombed them, so they broke the policy and started fucking up shit, USA would have maintained Isolationism. Because Germany actaully had no desire to go after the USA.

So Xcalibur that is the answer to your question why USA would have not joined the war; Isolationism. that was teh USoA forigen policy before the war, during the war, and would have stayed for the duration of the war if it was not for japan, Movie pearl harbor, what Japan's admiral said, that they woke a sleeping giant, was a true quote, Japan knew they fucked up when the brought the US out of there forigen policy and intot he war

Eh, either the us did trick the japanese into attacking them, the us were TOTALY surprised (yeah right) in Pearl Harbor, or whatever happened isn't important. Saying they would let all that happen is stupid
Remember that they give what.. 20% of their weaponry to UssR as a "lend" program? (20 is not accurate)

First off all, lets get the facts straight out WW2, USA knew the whole time germany and hitler where building up forces in germany, we didn't care you know why? our feelings at the time was COMMUNISM was teh biggest threat in the world, and russia was run by a commie
So if russa wanted to spread they'd have to go thru germany first, that's why germany was allowed to build up there forces, that's another reason why we maintained isolationism so badly, because of the communism threat.
