View Full Version : Do rogues(or anyone) use "Cutthroat" Combat manuever?

I've returned after being away for many years and there are oh so many changes.
I was looking through Combat maneuvers list and cutthroat in essence would be nice to make casters useless but what kind of success rate is there? What kind of weapons work best? Are many creatures susceptible to this? I'm around level 40ish now and looking at things like Shan Wizards(and maybe hopefully some undead casters as well)
Thanks in advance :)

It requires ambushing, and while it may be nice, I believe it would just be a wasted move when you could just ambush the head or neck and be done with it.
With the cutthroat you have to watch it bleed to death much like garrote. I personally don't see much benefit to it except for maybe just for shit and giggles and not primarily as a hunting tactic.
It's better used for PvP and in that respect it can save your ass when DS of a pure would be too difficult to push past.
It's completely useless in CvP.

It's a decent move. Daggers probably work the best and having a free hand also helps.

So it's not completely useless for Player Versus Creature? Anyone use this verse any undead casters with success? Cookies?

I've used it in the rift a lot. Cutthroat a warlock and wait til the WoF falls. It has it's uses for critters, just not a whole lot.

What would you say your success rate is with it? 99% 95% 20%? Do you use a dagger? longsword? breadstick? Does it make difference?
Thanks :)

I'm a short sword ambusher, I wasn't switching out weapons for that.
Of course it makes a difference, the smaller the better, which someone already mentioned. I'd say my chance for it working was about 80%-85%. I'm sure it's higher with a dagger, never tried cutthroat with a sai though, that would be interesting. It's been a while since I was there.

Can't you push past all that DS with an ambush?
My offensive pure DS was in the 500s. Perception was maxed too so probably add on that aswell.
If you miss you're fucked.

You can't pushdown the spells. Pushdown just changes the DS to offensive. It's still a bitch at times, especially with someone like Evarin who's got ever spell in the game on. On top of that cutthroat doesn't stun, so the Cloak of Shadows/Wall of Thorns and whatever else won't backlash onto you. The weapons flare now too. (cutthroat/feras) It's better then hamstring against casters because you can keep doing it. Hamstring, they fall down, you can't do it anymore.
Well, that's my view anyway.

I've found the most use against casters that can't be stunned. Like Seers for instance.
