Hollywood actor Heath Ledger has been found dead in his New York apartment, according to police, who say it was possibly drugs related.
A police spokesman said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the apartment that is believed to be his home.
The housekeeper went to tell Ledger the masseuse had arrived and found him dead.
The 28-year-old Australian-born actor received an Oscar nomination for the hit film Brokeback Mountain.
Sky's entertainment correspondent Matt Smith said: "We don't know what has happened here yet - whether it was accidental or not.
"He was not someone who troubled the headlines - he and his partner kept out of the limelight."

This is surprising. He wasn't the type you'd expect to go young in a drug overdose.

At least with Brandon Lee, they had finished filming pretty much all of the close-ups. The scene that got him killed was one of the last yet to film. They only needed a double in some of the far away shots like when he was playing guitar on the roof of his building.

The New York Times and CNN reported that it is.
CNN report (http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Movies/01/22/heath.ledger.dead/index.html?eref=rss_topstories)
Ok, so I checked the Times again and they are in retraction mode:
Paul J. Browne, the Police Department’s deputy commissioner for public information, initially said that the apartment was owned by the actress Mary-Kate Olsen, but later reversed himself and said that was not the case.
A representative of Ms. Olsen said that the apartment did not belong to the actress. “It is not her apartment,” the representative, Annette Wolf, a publicist for Ms. Olsen, said in a phone interview. “She does not own the apartment. She has never owned the apartment. She and her sister have an apartment in New York City but they are not in this building.”

My God, this is insane news. I heard about it over the radio and I thought it was a joke...sorta a runup to hype things up since the new Batman movie is coming out this summer.
My opinion, it's foul play. There is just no reason for him to commit suicide, given that everything was going ok in his private life, professionally he is a star and doesn't have a bad reputation or anything.

You were pre-teen in 1995?
Gentlemen, draw your own conclusions...
I was 10.
Actually, I was probably 9, I turned 10 in December of that year.
I hate to say it, but... like others, I'm glad Heath Ledger finished filming Batman.
I LOVE the Joker and can't wait to see it this summer.

Way to pick the worst movie of his career, and possibly the decade. (Unless that was (crappy) sarcasm, and then consider this to NOT be sarcasm).

I'm sorry that Heath Ledger's gone. It always makes you feel a bit mortal when people your age die.
I'm glad that he'll be remembered for a bunch of pretty darn good films and even the less great but still groundbreaking Brokeback.
I'm glad he made it through The Dark Knight.

It's not that hard to overdose on pills if you're mixing different kinds. And taking them with alcohol can cause a toxic chemical. Thats why theres a warning saying don't drink while taking this medication....Go figure.
That being said, I actually like Sleepers. I thought it was f'd up but -shrug-

I didn't like Brothers Grimm, or Brokeback for that matter, but did like A Knights Tale. Even though I may not have liked the movies, his acting was pretty good in all of them regardless.
It's a tragedy when people die so young this way.

Actually, they are saying the pills weren't spread all over the apartment as originally reported..and they think it might have been a combo of a sleeping pill and something else he was taking.
Of course, it's all speculation until his autopsy is done.
But it doesn't appear to be suicide according to the Police as of this morning.

Huh? Alcohol + sleeping pills actually has a chemical reaction and creates a toxic substance? Are you sure about this? I always thought that alcohol simply magnified the effects.. essentially slowing your metabolism so much you simply die.

It's kind of amazing how people were up in arms about how Bhutto shared some responsibilitiy for being assassinated but somehow a young man who had it all and OD'd is a tragedy?

From what I read today, it doesn't seem like this was on purpose, or even because he was trying to get high. The article I read had snippets of interviews with him about the Bob Dylan movie and Batman and how both were causing him a lot of stress and letting him sleep only 2 hrs a night, and because of that he was taking sleeping pills, which weren't working all that well anyway. The article also stated there were anti-anxiety pills in the bathroom, all still in their vial. Maybe he accidentally took too many sleeping pills (mixed with the anti-anxiety medicine?) because he was frustrated with getting no sleep? I dunno. But it really doesn't sound like he was just some loser drug addict who OD'd.

A maze of forest trails leading towards a tall, rusty gate.
A gigantic peak rising above the clouds as if reaching towards the gods themselves.
Shambling bodies struggling up from the dirt as they converge on a pair of warriors standing back to back, blades drawn in defense.
Slowly the images fade as the magic begins to unravel.
Malrocky must be beyond the reach of your spell.

It's newsworthy because a lot of people are a fan of his work.
Why do people always complain about this? If millions of people will pay 8 dollars to watch you in a movie, it is newsworthy when you die.
Newsworthiness doesn't mean it is earth shaking information.
Fergie pissing herself was newsworthy. So I believe a mistake like ODing on relaxo pills is too, for someone who's achieved '10 things I hate about you' fame.
