So my cat has the runs. Started when she had to take antibiotics for gingevitis. The gingevitis went away after only 2 days of the antibiotics, and she got the runs on the 2nd day, so I stopped giving her the meds thinking one caused the other.

Vet says "Oh well here have her take these." MORE antibiotics, I found out, except these are supposed to be a common med for cat diarrhea. Fine fine - except she refused to take them. I tried shoving them down her throat, tried crushing them and adding them to her wet food, tried hiding the pill in a piece of ham, tried mixing crushed pill powder with honey-water. No matter what I tried she'd spit and froth like a ZZ-Top beard, chin to floor.

So vet says, "Oh well hey try kaopectate." I look it up, turns out they meant they wanted me to use kaolin and petcin compound. Unfortunately, Kaopectate doesn't make their stuff out of kaolin and pectin anymore. They used to, hence their name. But now it's bismuth salycylate or however it's spelled. Which - cats REALLY can't stand. D'oh. Another med tossed in the trash.

So 2 weeks later and Jezebelly STILL has the runs and I'm starting to worry about a) her health and b) the occasional mess when her tail hits the box on her way out of it.

Vet says, "Hm. Alright try Immodium. .75 cc, twice a day." I ask, "Imodium AD?" she says no, just normal immodium, unflavored. So I go to three pharmacies, and discover there is no such thing as UNflavored liquid imodium, or its generic counterpart Iperamide. It comes in mint, or cherry mint. I figured, fine - if I'm gonna have to buy flavored and risk Jezebelly rejecting another med, at least I'll make this one cherry mint so *I* can tolerate it if I ever come down with the runs.

And whaddya know - she actually didn't froth it out.

As an FYI: .75 cc, of iperamide, which comes 1 mg. per 5 ml., is around 4 drops of the medicine. It's just under 1/5 teaspoon. Also, Imodium is Imodium AD. That's what "normal" Imodium IS. The AD stands for anti-diarrheal, and it doesn't come any other way besides their Advanced or Extra Strength or whatever. And that's AD too.

Whoa, antibiotics can cure cat gingervitis? Carl! Carl Spackler there may be a cure on the horizon for you yet!

Try a bland diet? Brown rice & boiled chicken pieces(or baby food) for a few days.

Our dog had Giardia and was we could not get rid of the runs he had on & off for years, when we were told to switch to the bland diet when it flared up it did help quite a bit.

(or baby food)

Yeah, the first level of turkey (or chicken) baby food is really easy on kitty stomach. My older cat has an irritable stomach, and when I used to feed her things like wet food or certain new treats, she'd get the runs. However, I give her Gerber turkey (no bits, just smooth puree) as a treat because it doesn't make her squirt. Also, it's great for mashing up pills in. Emmy is a bit skiddish so there's no way I could catch her every day (or twice a day) to shove pills down her throat. So when she'd have medicine, I would crush them up and mix them up in a little baby food. Worked like a charm every time, not to mention made a really happy kitty.

And ruin a perfectly good microwave oven? Not to mention the mess it'd make in the kitchen...no kitty asplosions in MY house, thankyouverymuch.

Turkey and rice puree for her treats might be doable...I'll buy a jar of it and see if they'll enjoy it. I have two cats, one is -not- sick, so it has to be something both of them can eat safely. Putting meds in food and leaving the food for her to get when I'm not looking, obviously, isn't an option. Too risky for the other cat to steal the food, giving the wrong cat the meds and the one who needs it without any.

So far she's tolerating the imodium, but no change in the litter box yet.

Jaz, next time, why not just brush some grape seed extract mixed with fish oil on your cat's teeth? They hate the taste and swirl it around their mouths trying to get rid of it. Works wonders on animals to cure breath problems and the natural acids in the grapeseed erode some of the nasty deposits that build up.

I picked mine up at Whole Foods pretty painlessly.

As for the poop problems, can't say really. :(

Glad your cat's taking her meds now though.

Just an FYI grapes/raisins etc are deadly to cats and dogs... so skip the grape anything with pets you care about.

My cat wont touch human food. If I open tuna she meow's but try and give her a little and she won't touch it. Anything else she doesn't even have interest in.

And here my cat prefers human food. If we don't give her some of what we're eating at any given time (yes, even cheese off pizza) she'll meow and sulk for hours.

LOL, all my cats have always been like that. This one is just so odd.

Jezebelly eats pretty much anything I give her, except if it tastes like medicine :)

Tuesdays are the fun nights because that's when I make either meatballs or meatloaf. A pinch of raw ground sirloin for me, a pinch for Jezebelly, a pinch for Sinchi. Another pinch for me, one for Jezebelly, one for Sinchi. We go through a couple tablespoons of raw meat before I start mixing it with the rest of the ingredients. Otherwise both my cats eat pretty much everything, including the mushrooms off the pizza, and the twice baked potato on one side of my supper plate while I'm trying to eat the steak on the other side of my plate. Thieves, the both of them!

My roommate once went on a weeklong business trip, leaving me alone to take care of her cat.

It had been sick, so I had to give it medication.

I had to turn it upside down and hold it until it squirmed and meowed in protest, squirt the medication in, and then hold the angry squirming cat upside down until I was sure at least some of the medication went down.

And the stupid thing still followed me around the house, meowing loudly.

As sweet as cats can be, it's too much trouble to deal with when something goes wrong. I just don't want any of it.

I'll drop money on my dog.

The cats... they're on their own. They're cats. Domesticated rodents.
