I was wondering if someone might be able to give me a few suggestions for a new video card? It's for my father for christmas, he likes to play things like Command and Conquer and Tiberian sun, war games basically nothing really online. But his video card is pretty out dated and is keeping him from playing the newer games. So basically i'm looking for a cheap video card that will allow him to play the newer games. Any help would be great. Thanks

This is about the best PCI card you can get.

For a pci slot (not pci express) I'd recommend any nvidia 5700 model (the second highest available standard pci).
I ran geoforce fx 5700LE on my old system for WoW and it worked great. Should work great for your dad running older games.
30 bucks from newegg.

If you want to swing something a little better, the next step up for an nvidia chipset in the pci format is the 6200.
60-93 bucks ... all with 256 in the memory slot.

just another quick question, how can i tell wether it is PCI or PCI-express or AGP? I'm not to computer savvy which ordering parts so i'm not sure on how to check to see which it is. I'm pretty sure it is PCI though but how can one be sure? i don't want to order the wrong type. Thanks!

Several ways but here is a quick one.
Start->Run->type dxdiag and enter
When it comes up goto display and it will break it all down for you.
Or right click on your desktop
Properties
Settings
Advanced
adapter
and you'll see the same info there. Whatever is easiest for you.

If he hasn't upgraded that thing recently which it sounds as thou it isnt, PCI-e won't be on the board no need to worry there.
AGP should be on the board unless its super old that became rather common, its a smaller brown slot will always be at the top of all the other slots. PCI it will definitely have.

While we're on the topic I was thinking of getting a new graphics card myself. Basically, I want something that will run Oblivion with no problems. Here's what I have now. quadro fx 1300, I can run the game with this but the lag is terrible.

Yes, generally. Although the ATI X series cards are newer than the ATI 9xxx series cards. X700>9800. X1600>X700.

Oblivion rocks. You should make any investment to get it up and running. Sheogorath for president.

The same holds for nVidia Geoforce cards, which I'm a fan of.
I don't know about Radeon cards, but the nvidias offer standard pci up to the 6200 and are a PCIe and AGP from there. You also have to look at any prefix individual manufacturers attach ... it usually denotes a change in memory type/amount.

Your card isn't geared toward gaming at all. It's a decent card for plenty of other things ... just not gaming.
Any nvidia 7300-7900 or radeon x series will do you.

Quadro is a business graphics (CAD) product line, if I'm not mistaken. Check out the links in my previous post for the best replacement for your budget.
