I'm fed up with the retarded emo/indie/mod music one of the local bars plays and just about every staff member is as well. Most of the music played is from an ipod the old manager left behind.
You are tasked with making a 3 hour music set for a bar. The bar has Irish/English undertones (if that helps).
READY. SET. GO!

I was always a fan of the blues while sitting at bars. But I'm chummy.

Danzig.
The pogues, Flogging Molly, NOFX, Nils Lofgren, Blind Melon, The Levellers.
There, that sidesteps the shit you hate. I played these at my bar as part of my playlist and the mood was great, good times were had.

I went to a bar around my hood, yo, that was sponsoring a karaoke open mic night. I would have preferred Expo 2000, by Kraftwerk, looping about ten trillion times to my noise + alcohol-induced vomiting than hear that shit again.
They need to keep that shit limited to cruise lines and Kutcher's Country Club.

Irish/English undertones... try Dropkick Murphy
Dammit I knew I was forgetting something.

Dropkick, Flogging Molly, Black 47, Bouncing Souls ... probably a few more I'm not remembering for your "modernized Irish cultural" music, but sprinkle your basic coverband sets inbetween it if you want to stay more generically diverse (as much as I personally love solid sets, I know most people don't love the drone of bagpipes as I do). Between classic/modern rock and early nineties you should be able to find some good filler.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Tom Waits, and for that extra English feeling.. The Streets.
P.S. I would NOT recommend playing pop-punk at your local bar.

fuck a bar, go with the pub and have it 24/7 stuff like the dubliners, corsairs, great big sea, wolfstone, and even some flogging molly.

The Streets.
That's just evil. As funny as I find the streets, no one wants to listen to that at a bar.

There are a lot of pop-punk songs DKM has, but they do a lot of real nice rock covers of traditional irish music, I agree that the punk/moshpit songs they have are not fitting for a bar, but something like Fields of Athenry, etc work nicely.

I suppose that would all depend on the person.

Irish / English you need some sing alongs. Throw piano man, turn the page, mony mony, if I had a 1000000, take the money and run, etc.

Heh ... I guess it's just a regional thing ...
You can't own a straight up shots, beer, and pool bar around here without George Thorogood, Floater, and Chumbawunba.
The Streets are a bag of shite. They're over now.
Thank God Chumbawumba are too :)
Seconding the Chumbawumba motion.
However, The Streets are awesome.

Bruce Springsteen and CCR.
Agreed! Songs that rock cover bands play are the way to go in a bar.

All great ideas!
Could people start compiling the actual songs?
Maybe something like this--
#. Band Name -- Song Name
1. Queen -- Don't Stop Me Now
Skeeter

FFS do you want us to load them on an iPod and mail them to you also?

I was hoping this would be a collaborative effort. Like a PC Bar Song List not a Vulvamancer Bar Song List.
A lot of people just gave me bands, not the choice song titles of said bands (although Skeeter did). I didn't think asking for a few more seconds of time was really that much of a request.

"I got friends in low places" by Garth Brooks seems to fit in to my neighborhood watering hole quite well. Keller can testify to that.
When Ice Cube comes on right after it makes it much less lame, and meshes well with the eclectic world that is Culver City.
P.S Pennywise "Bro Hymn" wins

Smashmouth, dude?
Christ almight, Gan. Did you just list the last 28 songs that were played on your local ClearChannel classic rock station?
Totally dropped the ball.
Replace Talking Heads' 'Burning Down The House' with Life During Wartime, Slippery People, or Psycho Killer.

The Streets were fucking awesome before they got mentioned in Rolling Stone. "Stay Positive" and "Geezers need Excitement" would prolly stop alcohol sales, so I don't think it'd be received well by the bar industry.
Just no karaoke open microphone shit. They need to play Ghostface Killah and Raekwon the Chef, fuckers.
