I bought a Zune on Black Friday just because they were $72 ($80 - 10%, I work at Toys R Us lol!), but I kind of overlooked the fact that Microsoft is retarded and requires XP SP2 or Vista to install the sync software.

Question: Is there any way to circumvent this? If not, I'll have to throw a second HDD into my machine and put SP2 on it, which is a hell of a hassle to have to reboot every time I want to touch the Zune.

Why the hell do you not have sp2?

Lol. No there's no way to circumvent it, and you're retarded for not having SP2.

<<No there's no way to circumvent it>>

That's pretty annoying, since you don't need SP2 to run the program, only to install it.

Edit: I run Office 2007 on SP1, so I can guarantee the above is true.

<<you're retarded for not having SP2.>>

Has your computer ever asked you if you really wanted to do what you just did?

Mine hasn't.

That's vista, not SP2.

I couldn't find anything. There has to be a way though. I'm sure some of out local techies know the answer.

Vista has yet to ask me if I wanted to do something. I turned off those options the day I got my laptop.

Windows Vista doesn't like it when you turn off User Account Control or whatever. It's going to punish you eventually.

SP2 patched numerous security holes, etc. I'd highly reccomend installing it... I'm also not sure about these "asking" things you're talking about, I install SP2 regularly at work and have never run into something like this...

Hahaha. It most likely will one day. It tried ONCE to turn it back on by itself but I threatened to buy a Mac and it hasn't tried ever since.

It's mostly the IE stuff that annoys me: ActiveX prompts and file downloads.

Drew2

You do realize holding down the Ctrl key when clicking on anything in IE bypasses all security checks like that, right?

Bobmuhthol

So does clicking on "yes I want to do this." It's still annoying and I still won't install SP2 because of it. All the security shit is a hassle to me, not a help.

But I still want to use my Zune. So far it's a $72 radio.

Interestingly enough, FF sucks.

Curious as to why you feel the need to avoid SP2 so much, the few complaints you have seem to be dedicated to you, and you don't have to upgrade IE. Granted Firefox is much easier to use as it avoids 90% of all the web bullshit such as the random file downloads and if you have something it doesnt work with ... odd.

Anywho if your hellbent on avoiding SP2 not sure if you can stomach the idea of upgrading your Windows Media Player either but it should be able to dump music as a playable feature I believe onto the ol Zune but I haven't tested such things just hear them on the interweb.

As much as I would advocate going to SP2, how about a virtual machine? Or what about the computer you just bought your girlfriend? Install it on there and try just copying over the program files, see if it'll run without needing to be installed.

The zune won't run as a standard removable drive when you plug it in?

<<The zune won't run as a standard removable drive when you plug it in?>>

No. I get the new hardware balloon that says it detected a Zune but then I need to install the software to do anything with it.

I don't do much virtual machine stuff, so I don't feel terribly comfortable with it. There are computers in my house that have SP2 but then I'd be stuck using someone else's computer which to me makes little sense in practical terms.

I don't think that Windows Media Player upgrade idea would work if I've never synced the Zune.

As has already been said... so does not installing SP2.

I ended up installing the Zune software on another computer, because I figure I don't need to sync very often and I just shared my music over the network.

So I just won an 8gb Zune*... it's pretty badass, I'm impressed, I hadn't been keeping up with this kind of stuff but it sounds great and I had no idea they had built in radios... sweet.

Anyway I found a site that talks about a registry hack that lets you see the Zune as a removable HDD, I'm going to just mess around with it as I have it right now, but I'm sure I'll be doing that shortly and I'll let you know: http://phaleux.com/?p=8

*Microsoft "installfest" event, got Visual Studio 2008 Pro for free (everyone got that) and then I got picked for the Zune... 3 runner ups got Halo 3, and some fifth chump got a bag. The first person they picked for the Zune had left... but her friends were there, they took a picture of me holding the zune, retardedly big grin and a thumbs up, and told them to tell her "thank you" from me.
