Getting an IPOD and want to know the pros and cons.

Spill it!

And WTF is up with Itunes? Do I have to use Itunes if I get an Ipod? What about loading up my own mp3's, is that doable?

Gotta use Itunes, but you can add old MP3's onto your ipod. One of the shitty things is that it is technically not allowed to transfer files from your ipod to other computers, but that is something easily bypassed.

I wanted an iPod touch until I found out that its hardware does not support transfers from a PC. Basically you can only put iTunes-downloaded files on it.

I'm definately not interested in being held hostage by Itunes for putting my music on the unit. That being said, I've had and seen other mp3 players and eventually they all end up sucking ass after frequent use.

From what I've read so far, I can use the Itunes software without being held hostage to any subscription fees, and still upload my mp3 library onto it with very little trouble.

Well technically you CAN, you just need your iPod Touch to be jailbreaked, and you can access the files in it wirelessly through WinSCP.

My jailbroken iPod (minus the icon names), I'm proud of it.

I hate iPods. I would LOVE to have the technology of an iPod in a user friendly device that I can load any song on it I want.

Unfortunately, the record companies are still too powerful....

Who buys a Ipod nowadays?

I have an iPod and I have no idea what you guys are referring to with respect to having to use iTunes.

I have a basic 80 GB iPod that isn't hacked or anything and I don't have iTunes, I load any MP3s or videos I want onto it and also use it as a generic USB hard drive.

I went with the iAudio from Cowon. Unfortunately, they no longer seem to be supported in the States. 35 hour battery life, 30G HD, smaller screen then iPod but really who watches TV on there anyways, and almost half the price of the iPod. Drag and drop, USB hosting capabilities, more codecs then I knew existed, all made it an ideal MP3 player. They were supposed to come out with an improved version over that one but I've since lost track of the company status.

I have a new generation 4g Ipod nano and it's so hot I love it. I was watching Mean Girls while at the gym last week and I've never felt so gay/awesome.

Lots of hotties in Mean Girls, that's not a bad motivation for working out. However, I wouldn't go telling people that.

I still don't own an Ipod/mp3 player and probably won't unless my new cellphone acts like one.

Mainly because it pisses me off to no end to have preteens all the way to full grown adults with earbuds jacked in their ears 24/7. Ordering something at the drive thru, ringing up at the register, talking on the phone, asking for help at the desk.

THey seem to think it's more important to listen to music then to give the person they're supposedly talking to their attention.

Edit:I also hate people who talk on their cellphones and do the same things.

I normally walk to a golf course and read the paper every morning and find the mp3 player great for that. Also for cardio at the gym especially since you can tune to the televisions.

Not so much the bike rides as I tend to not be completely aware of my surroundings for some reason. It's like riding a bike with no hearing... can't hear people whipping up behind me etc.

I just wish my player had AM. I need my sports talk and news radio.

When I was a freshman in College (4 years ago), MP3 players were just coming out. 1/10 people wore headphones on campus, on the buses in town, people interacted/talked. When I ran with friends, we talked while we ran.

Now, 7/10 people have headphones in almost everywhere I go on campus. It's crazy. Even my friends/workout buddies wear headphones almost constantly.

I have to tuck in the wires when I'm lifting, else they wind up catching the dumbells and either ripping out of my ears, breaking the wires, or ripping the jack out of the unit.

I bought an Ipod nano armband holder but found the strap too small for my upper arm (ripped out the last velcro circle), so I'm on a quest to find a holder thats made for larger arms.

I'm not sure about the iTouch, but I own the U2 ipod and the 30 gig ipod video and I'm able to play all my mp3 files. I only use iTunes to convert mp3's into aac files and transfer them into my ipod.

Wear it on your forearm. That's what I did.

How did you deal with the wires if the unit is strapped to your forearm?
How do you deal withi the wires (slack or lack of) when you're fully extending on arm, shoulder, chest reps?

I hate the wires. Almost worth going blutooth over it... almost if it didnt suck the battery life down so bad.

With it on my bicep I can run the wires back through my shirt so they'll be out of the way.

I only wear my iPod sometimes-- usually on trips or if I'm doing something for extended periods of time and want some music.

I don't usually wear headphones when working out-- when I ran cross country I either talked to some of my friends or else I just listened to the sound of my feet hitting pavement. Music tended to distract me and fuck up my pace and when you're doing a 15 mile run that tends to be bad. When I'm just running in the gym though I will listen to it sometimes.

As far as the arm problem Gan, my boyfriend had the same problem and eventually just clipped it to his shorts and ran the line up under his shirt.

I make fun of the guys with their forearm and bicep mp3 players hehehehe.

But.. when I tried it I used a small rubber band (from my daughters hair dressing shit) to loop up the right amount slack to allow full motion.

HEY just had a great idea.. hehehe.. they should make them with spring loaded retractable cords like those dog leashes or lighter leashes. EUREKA! Slap a Nike symbol on it I'M RICH!.

I just had enough slack to allow full range of motion in my arm and ran it up the sleave, through the neck and to the neck. The only time it was a problem was on the benchpress when it would get caught behind my elbow no the way down and snap out, but I'd just finish up the rep and plug it back up.

I use the banding technique as well since I have lots of slack in my current cord. It runs from my ears down the back of my shirt, through the sleeve (if I'm not wearing a tanktop) and then to the unit.

I like the retractable cord idea. It would definately save wear and tear on the jack from repeated forced removals.

Buy one with a belt clip. Just clip it to your shorts and then run the wires up/under your shirt. If there's not enough wire, go to RadioShack and buy a 1ft (or 3ft) 1/8mm extension for it.

Hey, how do you use your iPod without using iTunes? I hate how it auto sorts crap for me, I'd rather use the folder system I use to organize my mp3s.
I never attempted to not use iTunes because it would always launch when I first got my iPod, I figured it was some bloody Mac thing where I had to use their software.

Ugh.

(I hate shit on my shorts when I'm working out/running).

haha, I just found an oversize (atheletic) armband mp3 holder in a bag full of promotional items I got from my nephew who goes to TAMU.

Free merchandise FTW!
