View Full Version : How the hell do you defend against that?

A young half-elven child arrives, following you.
>
An Agresh bear tries to bite a young half-elven child!
AS: +174 vs DS: +68 with AvD: +39 + d100 roll: +6 = +151
... and hits for 35 points of damage!
Respectable shot to the back.
The child falls to the ground, dead!

[You have failed your current Adventurer's Guild task.]

You stare at nothing in particular.

I walk in the room and the child is instantly dead. Such bullshit.

And before anyone suggests I spell him up, this was with my ranger, it wouldn't have made a difference.

You know, with all the people complaining about their children getting offed instantly, I think I must be broken. No matter what character I do child tasks on, I always just keep walking from room to room no matter what's in it. Not a single child of mine has ever been swung at. If anything does swing it always swings at the character.

Who knows, maybe I'm just lucky.

You runnin Stormfront or Wizard? I know SF has some latency when movin about.

Some Rogue

That's usually the case for me too or at least I have time to disable the critter before it swings but this was just bam dead, before I could even react.

And, I run Wizard.

I run SF these days. But with most of the bells and whistles turned off or toned down so much that it hardly lags. My DSL on the other hand...

The worst is the temple. Absolute worst. If OTF had children tasks, it might be a bit harder, but in the Temple, executioners live up to their name and off the child before you ever have a chance to defend them from hiding.

Well back when I hunted Minotaurs I would setup a script to auto-cast something to disable the warriors because I got tired of them offing me before I could even see what was going on. Might give that a try, from my experience the script can react before you know its needed.

You can also PEER into the room first to determine if the room is clear or not. You can either wait for it to move, or tell the child to wait and go take care of it, or have INCANT CALM or SLEEP or something ready to go as soon as you walk in.

I'll have to make sure my ranger or my rogue learns sleep, calm or sanct I guess. :bleh:

What they should do is just make it so the child would always be a secondary target or make it so things don't attack the instant you enter a room.

618 + 103 + 611 + 102 (you can ward a child very easily) = about 75 DS. The child would have lived.

Rangers get mass calm, it's even better than calm. I don't know how old yours is, but it's a great spell for that.

fallenSaint

And you dont need to calm or sleep it necessarily, just stun or RT the effer long enough to get some action done.

Block or Parry Mastered warrior in a more defensive stance guarding or protecting the child works.....sort of. =0

Yeah, mass calm is disgustingly awesome. Especially for escorts/child tasks. I've never had it fail (except against glacei), and there's no warding to worry about. Instant safety, but you can kill them if you like, which you can't if you sanct.

I think you missed the important part of his post:

I know shit about this stupid game anymore, but if he walks in and the kid is instantly dead.. when would he have time for this spellup?

Spell the kid up as soon as he/she appears.

You have succeeded at the Rescue Child task 141 times and failed 8 times.

I can Sanct on this character and I've failed 8 times. Once because I killed the child just messing around and the rest because soon as I walk in the room the child is attacked before I can even push my macro to sanct.

It is a bitch but really doesn't happen all that often considering.

try creating a script that will spot the child and sanct w/o you haveing to type anything aside .autosanct

all you would realy need is this...

waitfor child
incant minor sanctuary
end

I would recomend that you replace the waitfor key to the first few words of the arrival messaging for the lil tike. given that it doesn't mention races.

You have succeeded at the Rescue Child task 157 times and failed 7 times.

And that includes a lot of rescues from fire mages and without spelling the kid up or anything or casting at any creatures along the way.

A triton executioner leaps from hiding to attack!
A triton executioner swings a coral-hilted sharply tapered longsword at a young half-elven child!
AS: +429 vs DS: +59 with AvD: +41 + d100 roll: +18 = +429

Vicious strike punctures intestines!
The child falls to the ground, dead!

Kinda strange the child died with 35 damage to the back. I've had a few of my travellers lose limbs from bandits with 70-90 damage and still live...

Just make it a variable in the script:

.rescue "name of current child"

rescue:
waitfor %1
incant minor sanctuary

goto rescue

I could think of a few false positives the system would generate with using that set up, and a few issues with looping it. All you really need to do is sanct when you find them to give enough time to spell them up.

If I'm not off my rocker here, your loop would cast sanct every room you entered when the child shows up. would make for a very mana intensive return trip.

oh, with all this talk about failures I've quiet a few rescues under my mains belt(not the they would own up to accepting such a mission) and I've only 1 failure, which was due to my character getting killed by some other character grizzled creature...

Ignot

if saving the child was easy and you were successful 100% of the time then it wouldn't be fun at all. Sometimes the kid is gonna die. On second thought, Gemstone isn't suppose to be fun.....

What's stupid is a child getting into a temple most adventure's can't even swim to and just hanging out playing hopscotch or some shit until you kill enough creatures.

IS IT OK TO COME OUT NOW? SPLAT.

I think rescue missions are just fucking stupid.

Fallen
01-05-2008, 09:15 AM
at cap, they are insanely stupid. The most powerful creatures normally found upon Elanthia mixing it up with little kids. I guess kidnapping is the only way it makes sense. The only one i've ever seen in favor of a capped area having rescue tasks is Perigourd. Not a knock on him, but I believe it is rather ridiculous myself.

I think the escort tasks are worse than the child rescuing missions if you are a rogue. The critters that "ambush" you (PEERing ahead doesn't help) seem to all be rogues, so first of all, they're basically immune to your fancy combat skills, and second of all, in order to be effective, you have to hide, and then they gank your pal.

I feel like I'm missing something, though, because I haven't seen people put up more of a fuss about this.

If you're a picking rogue you can start stockpiling 435 orbs... makes for easy work of the ambushers.

I agree, a lot of the rescue missions are brutally hard to complete, the worst I've had it is that I finally got a damn kid to come out around Pinefar...the second the kid steps out, a glacei slides in, splats it, and slides away just as I'm about to move. Another hard one was from Krag Yetis when I was younger, I leapt across the gap, and there was a Dweller waiting...of course, I slip and bust my ass, the kid comes over, and the Dweller proceeds to kill the child first, then turns me into a pancake with it's roll manuever
