Can anyone give me a rough idea of how many levels below the critter you can be without fear getting nasty (the whole forced offensive to your knees thing). And is there anything you can do to get out of it once your feared? Or spells others could cast on you?

9, I don't think so.

I believe bravery and heroism help with the fear factor, but can't so much be cast by others.

Unless things changed alot since I played last, being in forward or offensive stance also helps against fear.
bravery/heroism is the next best protection against fear. The best is reducing the level gap between the undead target and yourself.
The only other advice I can give is the quicker you kill the target, the less time it has to cycle a fear warding against you.
*edited to add:
You should be working up your Arcane Symbol training enough to use scrolls with 211/215 and start watching the net/pawnshop for these scrolls. Find a friendly sorcerer to unlock and charge one up and you're gold.

IIRC, the type of fear and roundtime is greatly diminished in adv or offensive stance. I believe fear starts at 10 lvls under the creature as well.

NO spell can be cast (short of killing someone) to knock him out of Sheer Fear? Hopefully once the mental circles are released that will be changed.

You would think Calm would do it, but no.

I was thinking that too. Forget would also make sense, atleast the old instance of the spell Savants will get in the year 2525.

... in the year 2525.
THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO, before the dawn of man as we knew him, there was Sir Santa of Claus, an ape-like creature making crude and pointless toys out of dinobones and his own waste, hurling them at chimp-like creatures with crinkled hands regardless of how they behaved the previous year. These so-called "toys" were buried as witches, and defecated upon, and hurled at predators when wakened by the searing grunts of children. It wasn't a holly jolly Christmas that year. For many were killed.
NO spell can be cast (short of killing someone) to knock him out of Sheer Fear? Hopefully once the mental circles are released that will be changed.
I dont suppose 216 Frenzy would enrage the target enough to break the effects of fear.
Anyone tried it?

My experience with fear has been that if you are 11 levels under the thing, you get the minor fear., i.e. level 37 vs 48 = fear, 38 vs 48 = no fear. This fear lasts exactly 1 round, doesn't drop you to your knees, but it does hammer your DS pretty bad. On the bright side, last time I messed with this if you are stunned into oblivion while under fear, when you come out of the fear the stun drops. It takes a minute or 2 to get hit buy the fear again after you break out of it.
I think the major fear kicks in at anything over 15 levels difference. That's the knees, drooling, etc.
I only have experience with this using a cleric with all the usual cleric spells.
At level 33 I occasionally get minor feared by a skeletal lord in Varunar. I think they are like 5 levels above me?

Gemstone site says skeletal lords are 41, which would occasionally gen one at 44, which would be the ones that get you.
Sounds about right then.
An w00t! for my cleric for kicking ass in skeletal lords at 33. :)

I tried the frenzy thing a while back, and it didn't break them out.
