Ok, well, I removed all instances (hopefully) of the name, as I don't wish to insult the player, but I honestly feel that the horrid grammar prevents the player from staying in character at times, whether intentionally or not. I believe there needs to be a line drawn at one point or another, to create a standard of grammar that allows everyone interacting with a player to actually understand what they're trying to say.
I'm not aware of the players' age, nor do I care to ask, but a player who obviously displays such a lack of grammar that I stand back and take notice enough to post here, well... it's frightening. I was just hoping for input from others, and possibly some guidance as to where a post fitting this nature would be put on the official forums to allow GSIV staff to weigh in (officially).
Again, this wasn't meant as an insult, or anything personal against the player, but when a player's grammar is lacking to THAT extent, something should be done. What can be done is beyond me, and likely, nothing will be done. I just simply felt entirely disillusioned with the roleplay environment at the time of this interaction due to the players' lack of half-decent grammar. (I mean, for Christ's sake! Even the player-to-player OOC communication...)
Anyway, just reply with any opinions, and I accept complete responsibility for any horrid grammar within my own mini-rant on bad grammar. :thanx:
Edit- Forgive me for leaving the impression that I may have just decided to call the player out. I was asking the player originally due to a misunderstanding involving a series of what appeared to be meaningless phrases being spammed in the public chat, in VC. Usually, this was followed by "ne spiret aman?" or "n spiret mana?" Anywho, I shush.

It seems like they either realize their grammar's in the toilet in both GS and RL and have compensated, or they're making fun of you. As you acted non aggressive in the log, the former seems more likely.
Anyway; at least they have a reasoning behind the action, even if it falls apart under closer questioning. There are bigger things to pick apart in gs IMHO.
As far as suggesting that they change, I suggest squealching them. It's an awesome function of the wizard.

I have never enjoyed non-standard grammer in GS.
To me, some people consider broken english the end all and be all of roleplaying, and make no effort to go beyond that.
Frankly, I find it irritating.

I am confused. Is your beef with roleplaying bad Common or with people that have shitty grammar skills?
If it's with that type of roleplay, I think you will just have to suck it up. Mauling English grammar (or technically Common grammar) isn't against policy.
If you're expecting GM staff to "do something", what do you think they can do, really? Make English 101 a mandatory requirement for playing GemStone?

Well, my issue is not with the roleplay. While some find it annoying, I personally don't mind in character babbling, be it a gnome's tinkertalk, or a halfling's stereotypical berry-infused mouth-foaming incoherant nonsense. At any rate, while I likely don't see the GMs doing anything about it, as I stated previously, I don't understand why people come to an English text-based game if they cannot type in decent English. It doesn't make sense to me. Ahwell!

I found half the names racing through that log intrusive on game play myself. Much more so then I would allow the way he speaks/types be intrusive to my game play.
To me it is obvious he does not have an elder paladin (short of it being bought) that is simply a GS e-peen thing.
While I find his gramme lacking, I would simply accept that he is a heathen that never learned to speak correctly or was unable to due to some speech impediment.

Personally I have used GS as a tool for my children to get better at typing. Their speed and spelling/grammar has improved ten fold. So perhaps you are dealing with someone that is young and learning to try and type fast. It really looked like it was more typo's then it was purposeful typing.

HAH! That and the "elder giant paladin" tells me exactly who this fricking numbskull is....I swear just being around this idiot on Teras is enough to make me put a finger in my mouth and pull the trigger some days. Squelch is your friend with this guy, trust me!

There's no doubt in my mind that GS has vastly improved my typing speed and quick reading comprehension. I also use to to do math with my son.

I don't see bad grammer as a problem.
I do have a problem with TTM and wizzie and puff and that junk. That seems more chatroom behavior that RP.
I can roll with some guy who RPs (and I use that loosely) a mumbling, bad common speaking dude, not some numbskull who puts "WTB 4xOHE TTM!!" on the net.
EDIT: I also can't stand this.. Future [General]: "Anyone got some boxes ages 40-60."

I used to play my characters with a lisp or childlike speech. I stopped because people hated it enough they'd blatantly bitch about it in an OOC fashion. RP or not, if it disturbs enough people, long enough, you give it up.

I am horrible about people's typing skills. Mine aren't bad...its my spelling that sucks. I don't tend to mind people talking with an accent, but it looks like this guy has a seriously hard time typing. My typing skills have gone through the ROOF since playing GS. My husband is dumbfounded how fast I can go.
The things that bug me personally are when people are too lazy to capitalize people's names, or the letter "i" when speaking of themselves.
Example: So and so says, "Can you give me some spells so i can hunt?"
MAKES ME INSANE.

what annoyed me most was people typing to slow. I would rather see mispellings or things not capitilized then slow ass typing. Is bad grammer really taking away from you having a good exeperience on gs? If so then that's kind of stupid imo.

In my opinion, bad grammar really DOES take away from the experience of Gemstone. Playing Gemstone is like an interactive book. I, for one, expect it to read like a book. When bad grammar occurs, it takes me out of the fantastical world.
Now that isn't to say that all bad grammar bugs me. It it's an accidental typo, fine, or if it's intentional as a part of an accent, go for it. But how long does it take to hit that shift key? Nanoseconds. Lower case "i"s or not using a question mark at the end of a question or other such things, don't save much, if any, time. It's just laziness.
I believe you make your own fun in Gemstone. If people bug the shit out of you, stay away from them or ignore them. Find people you like to play with and go from there.

I dislike when someone has to get their panties in a bunch over an one word typo. Seriously, if it is that obvious, which most are in GS, let it go.
Don't re-type it. Don't cough.
Most importantly, don't be that asshat that goes, "What's a falcion?" When you damn well know they meant to type FALCHION. Give em a break. It makes the interactions more comfortable and more fun.

Without reading the whole thread this thought occurs to me.
In Madagascar the movie the two Monkeys one conversed like a Civilized Educated person. Nice conjunction to the fact he was a monkey.
Also I would love to see the Intelligence score for some of these people who think that speaking with a heavy accent is good RP. After all if a Giant with a 100 for their Intelligence speaks with a lisp or with bad grammar they are definately not RPing their character.

Y'sure?
My Gor'Tog in DR spoke like a complete idiot in Common. He was highly eloquent when he spoke in Gor'Tog or used thief hand signs. The "Oh, that's a big dumb Gor'Tog" was a cover for him robbing people blind.
Grammar can be an issue to me though. A friend of mine (who has a Master's degree) made a fairly well thought out articulate post on a blog of hers recently. She normally gets a decent amount of responses to what she pots. She got none this time. She misspelled both label and uterus and I think that probably had something to do with it.

I'd also have to disagree with this. There are times where an accent would make sense for the character.
One character I play never learned Common very well because she didn't care to, since it is extremely rare to use it in her homeland. Now she's tossed into a place where she has to use it to communicate. She can speak her native language perfectly and her thoughts over the amunet are fine, but it's her Common that's abysmal.
In her case, though, I take care to make sure that while she does a lovely job of mangling the language, it's not past understanding. I have certain guidelines in my mind for how she'll phrase things, and will alter it slightly if I feel it's not clear enough to other people. Thus far, I haven't had a single person complain.

I'll chime in and say that at times I think it makes sense for a character to have an accent.
However, what drives me incredibly batty "accent" wise is when people type with Elizabethan english or just what they think is OLD ENGLISH. It's nitpicky and thus I don't harass these people about it but when I'm around them in game, you can bet that I'm sitting behind my screen praying that they shut the hell up soon.

There's a whole lot of difference between speaking with an accent or a lisp, than speaking like a complete moron.
People who play halfings like 5 year olds with boxies and bouncing around, throwing themselves in backpacks, or playing giants as though they're automatically created with Down syndrome make me insane.
I'll take accents and lisps over RPed stupidity any day.

how would that char know they have a "100" for INT?The player does, and it's the player that's at the helm. When I wanted to RP a waifish character, I didn't give her 100 Strength because (hello) then she wouldn't be waifish. She'd be Chyna.

Well the Lisp and accent were a bad choice.
Still the point is if you have a high intelligence then why speak like an idiot?
There is a difference between portraying someone who would say.
"I theenk I need a how you say Healer for my wounds"
and
"Cawn simun haal ma"
If both characters had a 100 INT the second should not happen. Though the second is sorta like a redneck.
As to how do you know as a character what your INT is. Pretty easily... you may not know the number BUT you know you are damn smart.
