View Full Version : How many hours do you "Work" A day?
Fallen

I've been bouncing this idea around in my head for a while, meaning to post, but just now getting around to doing it.
How many hours a day do you say you actually do work at your job? We all have downtime, or anyone with a job that has absolutely no downtime needs to get a new one. What I am asking is how many hours out of the day On Average you are actively working? If applicable, count the time you are preparing to do work, and cleaning up after the work you did.
For the sake of a somewhat even comparison, the super parents who work 8 hour days, then spend another 8 hours at home doing work will have to only count the former. However, house moms/dads can certainly count the amount of "Work" they do using average workday hours. Also, try to average out the days where you work 20 hours in a row with no breaks with the days where you may as well not have come in. Unless, of course, those days ARE your average..then by all means, post accordingly.
Ash's thread pretty much covered WHAT people do, but feel free to post that as well. I'm curious to see the results.

I'm at the law school about 8 hours a day, but probably only work for about half that, 6 hours on a Wed/Thursday (my heavy days).
And yes, I included going to class into my "work" hours.

As for myself, I gave it a good deal of thought and think I do about 4 to 4 1/2 hours of actual hours of work between 9 - 4:30 PM. My hours vary greatly due to working in a lab, but that is my average workday for the most part.
Some days I don't take a lunch, some days I take a long lunch. I am also not counting the time I spend getting into/out of the suites to GET to my work, nor showering and getting dressed/undressed.
I usually do 2 and a half hours in the morning and 2 in the afternoon, or visa versa. That is as accurate a figure as I can come up with.

I was thinking about people using school for work. People could say from start to finish during class hours is work, so it is kind of hard to work them into the equation I am looking to use. I suppose a more accurate way to measure school work is the amount of homework/assignment time you spend each day, or such activities as working in a lab. As opposed to sitting through a lecture, which may suck, but isn't necessarily ACTIVE working.

I'm may end up reciting Office Space. :D
I can't honestly say because I'm in customer support and it's dependant on how often they call and send in requests to have something fixed.
I tend to cover for the receptionist on her lunch hour so I'm logged out of answering my regular calls during that time, so I goof off then. I have a regular lunch hour where I sometimes do some work.
Even when I answer the phone, while going through the motions of walking the customer through something, I'm internet surfing. There are dead times inbetween calls. It's not easy to predict. Some days I'm busy all day. It varies.
I'm going to take a stab at a guess and say I average about 4-5 hours of actual work.
In the middle of the month I average 5-6 hours a day out of a 8 - 9 hour day.
A the end/beginning of the month I average 8 to 9 hours a day out of a 9 to 10 hour day. Thus the nature of real estate.

Inport: 2-4 hours per day depending on schedule. I'm about to go home right now in fact.
Underway: 18-21 hours per day depending on schedule. There was one week during this last deployment where I got 8 hours total over the course of the week.

I generally work "work" about 6-7 hours a day. I merely check shit liek this to clear my head. I then on average have 4-5 hours of class a day and spend about 1-2 hours doing homework. Then add in another 1.5-2 hours on pure travelling between the two. That's... 12.5 - 16 hours a day.
Then once every couple of weeks I throw in 12 hours a day on the weekend for the army Reserve.

Being a supervisor in customer support i can say that the people under me work 8 hours out of their 8 hour days.... at least should be o.O.
Myself? It actually depends on how many problems that get brought to my attention. Some days, I'm super busy, some days I'm bored as hell. Week to week, i would estimate that I work about 5- 6 hours a day during a 9 hour shift.

I average between 1-1.5 hours a day. It sometimes drops to as low as 30 mins, but usually doesn't top 2.5 hrs. That's out of an 8 hour day, but the 'working' time remains the same for even the 14-16 hour days.

Yer probably right. =)
As long as they all meet quota though, I don't care. I usually tell them all to at least "look" busy.
When i was at their position I'd front load my week and work my ass off, then when Thursday and Friday hit, I'd coast through the day having already met my quota for he week.

I was at work for 10 hours yesterday, took a half hour lunch. Figure I goofed/interneted for a good hour on top of that, so that's 8 1/2 hours.
Then I went home and worked another 5, but it's usually only 2 or so.
So, even rounding down I actually work at least 10 hours a day. M-Th, 6-7 on Friday (yay for a boss who lets me leave early), and usually another 10 (total) on the weekend.
I need a life.

About 18, if you're combining school and work.
Class is 16. Then I probably work two hours or so a day between researching/initiating/closing transactions. I really do enjoy learning and researching though, so I can't say it's all grueling WORK!!!! :)

I have to do solid work-- probably an hour at most of down time, and that's if I'm lucky.

Well, each week is severely different now that I went from full time to part time(forced, we're all getting laid off soon). But let me be clear, part time does not mean less than 36 hours, I just lost my benefits.
About 4 hours of each of my days I am with clients either giving print presentations, talking about upgrades on equipment or filling orders for plates, etc. About 2 hours of phone time acting like a telemarketer. So, I guess 2 hours of downtime a day between lunch and just fucking around. Some days I only work a half a day, in that case everything is halved.
I also go to college full time, I have 20 hours of just class time and then how ever many hours I do homework. I will not being going to college next semester and working. I thought I could handle the workload on top of still staying employed, but I can't do it. I'll fucking die. Either I quit work or I quit school.

Apparently I'm slacking. ;)
Anyways, Fallen, professional schools should definitely count class work. Being in one of my classes requires me to be more on top of my game than any other time in my day.
When I was a social worker, it was strange - my actual work time varied anywhere from about 3 hours, to 18 hours. Once, a client of mine had a doctor's appointment - in Syracuse. I had to drive him there and back and meet with his doctor and sort out his meds and all sorts of crazy shit.

In my old job I did about 1-2 hours of work a day for the last year I was there. With this new job I put in a solid 6-8 hours. I like this new job much better because of how much more busy I am. I assume it will slack off once I get the hang of things though.

I can't tell you how much I work yet. I'm trying to finish coursework for my court reporting program. This semester I only had two classes, but one is two hours long. Then, because machine shorthand is an elusive skill, two hours a night Monday through Friday are spent on practice.
Court reporters have a rather odd work schedule. The ones working in courtrooms may have a typical nine-to-five job, but there are others who contract to work depositions and may only actually sit and report (or "write," as we call it) for three or four hours in a day. The catch is that editing and preparing the transcripts eats up time after the deposition is done. Your workload could be a breeze one month and hellish the next.
This what I know about it, anyway. Reporting students sort of live in a vacuum until they graduate because we're essentially professionally useless until that time.

Out of the 40 hours a week I work as an Institutional Research Analyst - I work probably 36 of them.
About every other weekend I work 16 hours for a Plumbing Contractor - the whole 16.
My senior thesis was on cyberslacking in office environments . . . way cool stuff.
EDIT: None of this involves commute, shower, dressing, and the like which gets intensive if I have a board meeting.

As a receptionist at a stock transfer company I probably work 3-4 hours on average out of a 6 hour day. Most of my work is "logging" in received stock certificates that we get from FedEx, UPS, USPS and DHL. It doesn't take too long to log every thing, it just depends on how many packages we get.
Other than that, I spend the rest of the time answering the phone. I get HELLA bored the last 2 hours of my work day, so I spend it secretly surfing the web because I'm not "allowed" to do anything else.

When I worked in the hotel industry.. 80 hour work weeks during season were more the norm. We balanced them with the 'only' 60 hour work weeks out of season though.
12-14 hours and sometimes I'll work a couple hours on the weekends. A lot of that time is spent in meetings where I struggle to stay awake.

I do about 6 active hours a day at work, 2 is down time(8 hour work day), and then 5 hours a day for my class. You just have to do what you have to do.
I tend to only sleep 2-6 hours a night.

Oh yeah, usually I'm up and at em at 7 or 7:30 am and I end my shift at 11pm EST. Or I work overnights, from 5pm to 7am, and I spend time with my kids. Lately it's more of 10 hours ( 1pm - 11pm ), but on any given day if its needed, I work the marathon.
How? Well, it's rough for a single guy to get, but I'd shovel shit if it was the deciding factor to take care of my family. I sacrifice myself in order to keep the mother home to take care of kids/house/me.. I'm usually pretty worthless when I get home after a day like that, but I still usually assist around the house. Days off get used for projects ( like the f'in bathroom sink ), and recooperation, but most of it's spending time with kids who grow up too fast.
Actively I'm either dealing with idiots/assholes or doing physical labor. Retail management ftl.

Yea, I wouldn't actively discount class. It's abotu as engaging as goign to a meeting, but you don't get a bad grade if you fail the course.
As for me, Par for course is to get home around 11pm, after leaving at 7:30 am and promptly knocking the fuck out. A few nights a week I may go tot he bar, have like 2 drinks then go home and knock the fuck out.
On the weekends when I'm not working. I'm usually pretty shitty.

I'm in the office about 11 hours a day.
I do technical work (i.e. underwriting, regression, modeling) for 4-5 hours.
Lunch is an hour.
Actual meetings for one to two hours.
Useless meetings for two or three hours.
I work during lunch if it's busy, otherwise I take an hour or two for it.

Good thread.
I'd say I work MAYBE 3 out of the 8 hours I'm at work. That's Monday-Friday with maybe one Saturday a month. I'll average it and say 4 since somedays we get busy. So 20 hours? I'm kindof like the sales/AP/AR person so when I'm not helping customers I'm printing invoices or applying checks. Most of which gets done first thing in the morning and then I spend most of my afternoons fucking around in the shop doing my own projects (yay for taking advantage of the plasma cutter and still getting paid by the hour!)
When I first started working there I'd freak out when I was able to just sit around and read the newspaper. I asked my boss to find me work and he's like, "This is just how it is sometimes....can you pass me the sports section?"

Well..each day is a little different.
Wake up at around 4:30-5:00am to shower, make food for the kids, etc etc..
Get the kids to school at around 6:30-7:00 depending on how lazy I feel
Get into my office no later than 7:30
Work there till around 5 on a day without a job to send out otherwise I'll be at work till about 3 in the morning if we do have a job..which is most of the time right now.
Pick the kids up at 5:30
Get home at around 5:45-6:00 and start dinner
Get the kids cleaned up at 6:30 to be in bed at 7:00
I start cleaning up the house, etc etc...Usually get done with that around 9:00
Get my shower/bath/cleaned up at 9:00 or so
Sit down to check on the news at around 10
Do some additional work at home till roughly 12:00-1:00
Fuck around on the internet for a half our or so... 1:00-1:45
Thats an "average" day. Some are much worse, some are far better as far as the actual hours go. I've had a few times where I haven't gone home for two or three days from being at a job. Some times I just don't go in for more than about 6 hours a week...

The first 5 business days of the month I clock 9-12 hour days because we prepare our financials monthly. I take a lunch hour and even though I usually work through part of it for the sake of ease I'll count that as downtime. So 8-11 hours during Close. I'd guess that sanity breaks, bathroom and coffee accounts for 2 hours a day of downtime. So 6-9 hours/day during Close.
The other 3 weeks of the month are more relaxed and I probably work about 4-5 hours in an 8 hour workday.
There are times when I get tapped by senior management to prepare a special report or analysis which generally requires me to work as long as it takes to complete (for some reason executives never like to wait), but those situations are completely unpredictable.

I usually work about a full 7 or seven and a half hours at work, that's excluding breaks. I'm a baker I usually work either from:
2 to 6 or 7 ( I have to get home to get my son ready for school) then back to work 9-3
4-6 then 9-3 (when I have to go to get my son from school)
on days when my significant other can get my son ready for school I work a full 4 am to 12:30pm
two days out of my work week a do a full six hours (excluding break) from 8:30 am on but, usually blow my break off or stay at work during my break to help out.
It's not like I get to stand around or anything it's one thing after another, it's a good thing I like my job I guess, I mean I have fun doing it. :)

Negative three:
Even if I have 8:00AM labs scheduled twice a week and/or a "work" schedule, that doesn't count as me having a job, let alone a career -- I'm going to be doing extensive research during the weekend, until I am fully employed with coverage, benefits and the whole nine yards, no matter how hard I bust my ass now, even for the occasional paycheck, != working.
I expect to begin to do actual work when I have set income in relation to what will probably begin as an internship in two and a half years. I tell people I'm unemployed, even if they disagree with me. "Oh, that counts for something." No. No it does not. Stupid plastic smile bitch. Er.
