View Full Version : Best and Worst of GS

I was having a discussion with someone the other day about the best and worst things that have been introduced into GS over the years and thought it would be interesting to hear others opinions.

I'll start the ball rolling with what I consider to be two awesome introductions, one huge and one very minor but both of which have made a huge difference to my gameplay.

Playershops
Hair altering gadgets

Best - Much improved usage of verbs.
Worst - WARN command.

Best - Bounty system
Worst - Empath combat spells

Best - Bounty system
Worst - Empath combat spells

Have to agree on the Best

Worst for me? ----> CMAN Cooldowns, not necessarily a bad concept, but the most annoying to me.

Worst - Level cap / GS4
2nd Worst - Pay events

Worst: MA armies and/or script-o-zombies

My opinion only of course.

Worst: Any and All instrument messaging

Sthrockmorton

BEST - Sleep Sprawl

Suppa Hobbit Mage
10-30-2007, 10:59 AM
Best - Adventure Guild, lumnis, halflings get stronger in gs4, last EG auction, teras temple, krolvin war storyline, I could go on and on -- I think there are TONS of improvements, all the time. Even something as simple as using the hammer to select people for flares is cool
Worst - Recharge nerf, removal of droppage upon death/decay

That's the kind of thing I was getting at when I mentioned the neat hair alter items. Little things like that can make a huge difference to some people.

Celephais

Yeah I was just joking about "worst" being empath combat. Things like recharge being useless now, instruments, warn, are all much worse.

Suprised no one has mentioned paladins as best or worst yet...

Savageheart

Best: Player run shops, CMAN, MOC, new flares(anyone remember when your choices were Ice,Fire, or Vibration?)

Worst: RELEASE TIMETABLES, Phasing of strong merchant 'off the shelf' items (c'mon I'm tired of wishing for the good ole days, and more tired of seeing the samn damn people getting on lists every fracking time), profanity filter (soap... it burns! The goggles do nothing... got used to saying shite somewhere else and its becomming a hard habbit to break when I get surpised... within reason I can understand but if something isn't COMPLETELY tasteless meh)

Since IV:

Best: CMAN list (pre and post review), playershops, level cap
Worst: Paladins before savants or monks, cancelling LCS, making Sympathy a criminal act

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Khaladon getting fired.

LCS?

10-30-2007, 01:25 PM
Best:
1) Redux
2) removal of heavy hide armor
3) changes to armor crit thresholds to remove the 5/rank for all armor
4) Addition of Castle Claidesbrim as a Landing Hunting Zone (still the best hunting zone around in terms of depth of the zone when I left)
5) Creation of Voln/COL
6) Getting rid of droppage, for which the timer would no longer make any sense ANYWAY, considering how long it takes to get to some places.
7) Getting rid of the old breakage system
8) The 95 blue/green tent auction
9) Enegue?s Sword
10) Creation of the Rift
11) The First Illyan Cloud
12) Destroying House Jakarta

Worst:
1) Teras Isle
2) Foehn?s Promise 75 dollar for an item event
3) Changes to the enchanting system
4) GS4 mechanics changes
5) Hiring Warden
6) Hiring Ophion
7) Hiring Banthis
8) Hiring Fawn
9) Giving Nighhawk and Silkie the only enchanting workshop on Teras for an under the table cash payment.
10) Allowing for the creation of House Jakarta
11) Tin Cans with Claids
12) Letting Blades change from a warrior to a rogue at equal level, giving him a free re-allocation and class change.

Heh, someone had issues with House Jakarta.

I really hate the "travel" you have to endure to get to the Elven Nations. I'd rather it work on the travel and boat premise of buy a ticket, sit in a room and wait to end up there by some vehicle, not walking, climbing and riding ridiculous carts.

The carts and the ferry crossing kill me... the worst part about the ferry crossing is that the ferryman can take a break! WTF is the point of making me sit there for 15 minutes just so I can move one room over? Can't I just tell my familiar to cross the river and gate to it? Obnoxious. (the 10 silvers is annoying too... I wish I could buy a lifetime pass from him for 50k so I never have to worry about it again).

100k is a tad steep. Difficult travel distances are only good in games...you know...with heavy populations. They still have a game meant to hold 1500-2000+ people a night, and 350 people loged in.

CrystalTears

Yeah. I don't play a game to have to script for 20 minutes and have to do encumberance checks and wait around for someone to stop having their break in order to get somewhere. I play to have fun, not to help people have this illusion of realism in a game. It's not necessary, not to this magnitude.

Having an airship work in the exact way as the Teras ship is all I ask.

Teavangelical
10-30-2007, 03:24 PM
I too could do without the travel to the Nations, but I put up with it thanks to a script that does nearly all of it for me. The biggest annoyance is the time. And, I guess the money, though once you have a few million silvers floating around it's not terribly noticeable.

Though if you time it right, it takes almost half an hour just to get across. Longer if you miss the damn blindman ferry. While we're at it, let's fire that ferry captain to Vaalor and build a huge bridge made out of halflings. I hear they're durable.

I read on the officials they are planning to do something vaguely similar with the Solhaven trip. God, please spare us. Solhaven is the one trip anywhere that ISN'T some kind of pain in the ass.

We can has monks instead?

I always thought it would be cool to have maybe three ways to get to and from each city. A long, relatively safe "merchant caravan" which might take twice as long as normal but with no chance of death. The normal route, of course as the second. And a super fast, super dangerous, swim-the-lake-of-Ta'vaalor type of route for the older or time pressed people.

And they wonder why hardly anyone plays anymore. You'd think with the state GS is in, they'd be more focused on making things more fun and less tedious.

Not to mention Solhaven doesn't really have anything to offer, whereas EN and Teras have stuff you can't find anywhere else. Every hunting area in Solhaven has a like level equivalent in the Landing.

The River's Rest trip nerf was pretty gay too, for the same reasons.

CrystalTears
10-30-2007, 03:49 PM
I have no idea why some people of Solhaven want to isolate that town even more by making it harder to get there. On one hand they've been asking for years that it be another newbie drop off point, then on the other hand want it harder to get to. Some of those citizens don't have all their peas in their pod.

I agree completely. But reading about it, it was mostly an idea by some powers that be and not anything approaching implementation. Pray to God it stays that way...

I remember coming back from hiatus and ignorantly heading to the boot with my two amulets. Really, what good DID nerfing that to for anyone?

The world really does need to become smaller, not more isolated, and maybe it will be a little more fun.

I think a lot of that problem originated from ideas generating during the AOL era. When AOL happened, the landing and RR and its exterior hunting areas were not big enough. The glacier was a clusterfuck, and not enough people knew how to maneuver around Claidesbrim. So they created icemule, and made silverback orcs rich to promote people to move there. Then came Teras. Then came Pinefar. Still wasn?t enough for the post web transition, so they created a massive project for EN, which would not only service what was there at the time, but a whole lot more people.

But those people never came. Now everything is too far spread out. With the loss of players and people, it became even worse. The landing itself can support the entire population now, but they are forced to move around elsewhere to hunt. Thus, the problem becomes worse and worse and worse.

Worst:

1. Stun Cloud and Death Cloud being made player friendly (GSIII)
2. 10k experience penalties upon decay (GSIII)
3. Terate and his "let's automatically implode everyone in the lands above 20" events (GSIII)
4. Virilneus (GSIII and IV) -- although admittedly he does have a good alchemy website
5. Several GM's decision not to ban Virilneus for acting like a tool: ie., casting implosion at Helden Hall's first official event, calling groups of people to Luukos's shrine and then casting open implosion, excessive and unwarrented PvP, defaulting to open implosion whenever confronted by someone of a higher level, stealing people's weapons (GSIII primarily)

Best:

1. Skill reallocations when substantial changes to a profession are introduced (only then) (GSIV)
2. Silvean Rashere (GSIII) and Lylia Ravenbane-Rashere (GSIII)
3. Df Redux (GSIII and GSIV)
4. Mini-quests/Rp events (GSIII and GSIV)
5. Front ends (GSIII and GSIV)

Ha ha. I remember one of Nodyre's alts got huffy with me for doing a foraging task in a ... dangerous area. Where else do you forage? Duh.

Apparently the critter gen I caused by being there three minutes or so got his character killed. So has nearly everything else in Icemule at one time or another, come to think of it. He just could not hack that place for any amount of whining. There was a stretch he was dying about once a day if not more.

Oh, my god, I still have the log! Here are some gems:

Dayzed deeply says, "I'm off to be killed on the sleeping lady mountains again."

Speaking deeply to you, Dayzed says, "You know, foraging there is very frustrating for folks trying to do hunting bounties..."

Speaking deeply to you, Dayzed says, "You cause swarms that you don't have to face, but I definitely run into."

Dayzed shrugs.

Speaking to Dayzed, you ask, "In other words, I should drop my tasks so you can do yers?"

You say, "Mm...not so much excited about it."

Speaking deeply to you, Dayzed says, "No, I suggest that you not do foraging tasks in such dangerous areas."

Speaking deeply to you, Dayzed says, "Just a thought."

Uh... when they tell you "go find me a blossom that can only be found on the forest road" there is really no where else to go. I hate people like that.

While I did sort of see his point about the swarms, there really wasn't anything I could do about those. Foraging in snow crones wasn't really my idea of fun, but when you get the foraging tasks, you obviously have to go where they tell you. EDITED: And as a ranger who enjoys the easy 800 exp, what kind of fool would I have to be to turn the task in? D:

Also, I was foraging in the area before he even showed up anyway. I'm not a complete asshole, but I'm also not about to walk on eggshells all the time for other people either.

He was also generally annoyed at the ease with which rangers could do other things like scale the local rolaren gate and not die in Pinefar, so I suspect he had ranger jealousy for a while there.

Can't say as I blame him. We are made of awesome, after all.

Best for me, and the things that would make me come back if certain conditions were met:
Race specific documentation and history.
GS Barbie.
Character-based drama.
The extreme customizability of characters.
The possibility of savants and monks.
CMANs.
Coraesine weapons.
World docs like metals, woods, gems, et cetera.
Gift of Lumnis.
Adventurer's Guild.
Nalea gowns.
Hair-styling jewelry.
Amulet holders.
Premium reward system.
Enhancive items.

Worst:
Some of the more recent bard and ranger spells, and the way the GMs heading the projects refused to listen to input.
Half-elf ages.
Andraste's senseless, autocratic veto on cholis.
The fact that Voraviel didn't get to design black ora weapons.
Player-based drama.
The possibility (I don't know if it came true after I left or not) of someone who hates the way elves are currently structured and cultured being put in charge of them.
The lack of customer service policies. Or if they have them, lack of customer service policy enforcement for GMs that should not be talking to customers.
Paladins coming before monks and savants.
Voraviel leaving.
Sorcerer illusion reps.
Musical instrument scripts.
