J.K. Rowling Outs Hogwarts Character
HILLEL ITALIE | October 20, 2007 07:40 AM EST | Associated Press
NEW YORK — Harry Potter fans, the rumors are true: Albus Dumbledore, master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay. J.K. Rowling, author of the mega-selling fantasy series that ended last summer, outed the beloved character Friday night while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall.
After reading briefly from the final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," she took questions from audience members.
She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds "true love."
"Dumbledore is gay," the author responded to gasps and applause.
She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. "Falling in love can blind us to an extent," Rowling said of Dumbledore's feelings, adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down."
Dumbledore's love, she observed, was his "great tragedy."
"Oh, my god," Rowling concluded with a laugh, "the fan fiction."
Potter readers on fan sites and elsewhere on the Internet have speculated on the sexuality of Dumbledore, noting that he has no close relationship with women and a mysterious, troubled past. And explicit scenes with Dumbledore already have appeared in fan fiction.
Rowling told the audience that while working on the planned sixth Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," she spotted a reference in the script to a girl who once was of interest to Dumbledore. A note was duly passed to director David Yates, revealing the truth about her character.
Rowling, finishing a brief "Open Book Tour" of the United States, her first tour here since 2000, also said that she regarded her Potter books as a "prolonged argument for tolerance" and urged her fans to "question authority."
Not everyone likes her work, Rowling said, likely referring to Christian groups that have alleged the books promote witchcraft. Her news about Dumbledore, she said, will give them one more reason.
I always thought he walked kind of funny...
How long till evangelicals start burning Harry Potter books?

C'mon man: We all know she was reaching out to the cultural upbringings of Christianity's earlier phases of Saturnalia.
All those closet case Republicans are probably wanking over this for at least two reasons, now.

I thought the evangelicals were already against the Harry Potter books, due to wizardry and magic? The will always defend their right to that type of monopoly.

She created all of these characters as though they were real people when she was writing the books. It makes the characters more in depth. That's why they're so detailed and fun to read.
I'm glad she waited until everyone bought the books and things had died down to come out with it. Otherwise it would have been way more sensationalized than it will be now.

I don't see the point in releasing this info now... except to get more publicity. It's going to scare off some parents who will now prevent their kid(s) from reading/watching the series. It will also give the wacko groups more 'justification' for their crusades.

For some reason, I really want to see Peter Boyle as Jack McDermott jump up amidst the Jesus campers and start doing a sermon perhaps somewhat reminiscent of his Messiah complex in "The Dream Team" when he enters the black Baptist church.
That would be holy.

I wonder how many more books have sold now, with people hunting for all the little clues that should have made them say "AH HA!! I KNEW IT!!!" through the other books, which they didn't buy the first time around.
She's such a good marketer/sensationalist/call it what you will.

I'm inclined to say it's because she doesn't give a fuck (which innately transforms anyone of celebrity status into that much more of an icon.)
Over my corpse would I place the progression of her characters alongside Tolkien, but I think she was just fielding a question being her usual unusual self. Maybe.

Speaking of Tolkien, i find it amusing that the Christians are against the Harry Potter books because of 'magic', but many of them revere the Tolkien books, something along the lines of them telling the story of Jesus.
Excellent marketing ploy.
And yes, the Christian right has already sacrificed the Potter books over the fire for delving in witchcraft and sorcerery.
I like the monopoly quote btw... QFT.

It might just be me, but it seems that it's becoming more and more common to turn a character gay as a 'surprise' plot feature. Is being gay the new black or something?
No wonder they kept calling him headmaster!!!

It's because Tolkien was a Christian and a contemporary and friend of C.S. Lewis. These associations make reading them okay. ;)

I dunno, he's no more or less gay than the other professors. The adults that aren't in obvious relationships are portrayed asexually.

That would be true in an ordinary work of fiction. Obviously not in Rowling's world.

I think she did it for some of the same reasons Raymond Feist lade made/mentioned one of his more prominent characters in his first book gay. To prove the point that while he didn't seek to make any characters out to be gay, the author doesn't take sexual orientation into that great of account, and a central character could be made into a homosexual and it has no real baring on the book whatsoever.
