I would agree, the Ravens arent that great anymore. They have struggled to produce on offense this season mainly because of poor QB play. They have had a fairly solid running game though and their D is still one of the best in the game. Buffalo.... has a lot of room for improvement. Ravens win it.

Titans/texans I totally meant to titanic.. that's what I get for using OP format for the first time. WHO KNOWS IT MAY be destined... texans with a mighty comeback to save my pick! I hope not... since I have money on the titanics and don't give a flying fuck about this pool.

I wasn't aware anything after a season came to an end made a bit of difference in the current season.

Last year means dick, quit living in the past.

When you take a test, you are graded on your ratio of correct and incorrect answers. Not answering a question is considered incorrect. This is true with most things in life.

If you don't pick ... your pick (that you didn't make) is incorrect, thus a loss.

Going into this week he was at .539, I can't help it that he only had 3 picks out of an entire week down.

TheEschaton
10-21-2007, 08:37 PM
The point of the matter is, "late" picks aren't late at all. Your pick for a game is frozen the moment a game starts, as soon as the 1 pm game started without Drew's picks, it's like he didn't pick at all.

And not answering is not always considered incorrect. In fact, on most standardized tests, not answering is not held against you, while incorrect answers are.

If you sit down to take your SATs and don't answer half of them and get everything you answered correct ... you still only answered 50% correctly.

If you pick 3 games out of a possible 13 and win those 3 games ... you're 3 for 13 that week.

Tsa`ah

Actually they do in the realm of the season's pick percentage ... as Lat demonstrated. If it didn't count for shit, his percentage wouldn't increase by 7 points.

Bobmuhthol
10-21-2007, 08:43 PM
<<If you sit down to take your SATs and don't answer half of them and get everything you answered correct ... you still only answered 50% correctly.>>

You're right, but percentages have to add up to 100%. Here the percentages are right and wrong, where as the SAT has right, wrong, and no answer. You answered 50% correctly which results in a score of 50%. If you answered 50% correctly and 50% incorrectly you'd end up with a score of 38.5%.

Tsa`ah

Bobmuhthol
10-21-2007, 08:51 PM
A regular test, yeah, you're fucked if you don't make an attempt at every question.

But not everyone here (ie., me) sits around and waits for the next pick thread to show up to jump at the chance. Of the times that I did pick, I've gone maybe like .400, but overall I should get .300 for not picking the other times? That doesn't make any sense at all. Does your batting average drop when you don't play in one game?

Also note that for virtually every title ever that involves highest %, there's a minimum sample size, so your example of just picking Colts and Patriots to get highest percentage wouldn't work.

TheEschaton
10-21-2007, 09:05 PM
And I think Latrin laid down a rule last year where you have to pick an average of at least 10 games a week averaged over the season, to be in the "running" for best picks.

Latrinsorm
10-21-2007, 09:18 PM
If you sit down to take your SATs and don't answer half of them and get everything you answered correct ... you still only answered 50% correctly. If you sit down to take your GREs and answer 50 right you are going to have an astronomically higher score than someone who gets 50 right and 50 wrong.
I wasn't aware anything after a season came to an end made a bit of difference in the current season. My point is that Sean2 is clearly a better picker than I am, but by this "if you didn't pick it counts as a 0" method I'm a significantly better picker. That's absurd.

Daniel
10-21-2007, 10:14 PM

My point is that Sean2 is clearly a better picker than I am, but by this "if you didn't pick it counts as a 0" method I'm a significantly better picker. That's absurd.

If you don't show up to play against an opponent it's considered a forfeit ... thus a loss.

If you're not picking you are choosing to forfeit. It's not like the games are posted 10 minutes before kickoff ... nor is it as if people aren't making 1-3 posts in the week's thread before actually posting their picks.

Not picking gives a null value, thus pads a season's overall percentage.

Bobmuhthol
10-21-2007, 10:52 PM
<<Not picking gives a null value, thus pads a season's overall percentage.>>

Again, that's why there's a minimum requirement to be considered for the title. Not picking doesn't mean you picked wrong. From a statistics standpoint, your arguments and/or analogous comparisons are horribly, horribly flawed.

If you play in only one NFL game and record 1 touchdown but are on the roster for 10 seasons, you average 1 touchdown per game, not 1 touchdown per 160 games.

Tsa`ah
10-21-2007, 10:56 PM

Actually not Bob.

The only thing keeping someone from posting their picks each week before kickoff is them (baring disaster).

If you play in only one NFL game and record 1 touchdown but are on the roster for 10 seasons, you average 1 touchdown per game, not 1 touchdown per 160 games.

You keep trying to draw a line between sports statistics that are influenced by one's ability to play, or another's ability to keep you from playing and an weekly pick ... "your arguments and/or analogous comparisons are horribly, horribly flawed".

Bobmuhthol
10-21-2007, 11:08 PM
<<The only thing keeping someone from posting their picks each week before kickoff is them (baring disaster).>>

This has absolutely nothing to do with anything you're responding to.

<<You keep trying to draw a line between sports statistics that are influenced by one's ability to play, or another's ability to keep you from playing and an weekly pick>>

You're giving examples that suck to prove your case; I'm giving similar counterexamples to show it.

It's not like I was trying to game the system anyway, I just got up late, I didn't even look at the scores, if you look at the picks I made they probably weren't great.

You're really internet-lawyering yourself up here dude, I don't think my whole season should be messed up because I forgot to post up some games one week. Last year I was out of town for a week and a half, should I have lost because of that too?

No one suggested you did.

You're really internet-lawyering yourself up here dude, I don't think my whole season should be messed up because I forgot to post up some games one week.

You would infer that ... no surprise.

On the same note, you should be in contention with everyone else that made picks? They should be penalized because you, or anyone else, couldn't post their picks despite the fact of posting in the thread 3 days before?

Last year I was out of town for a week and a half, should I have lost because of that too?

Everywhere else in the world you would have. It's not like you couldn't have posted your picks at any time before you left is it? I mean ... it's not like the schedules for the entire season aren't as accessible as this board.

Not picking gives a null value, thus pads a season's overall percentage.Your suggestion leads to absurd results. How do you not see that? For historical reference, last year we only had four people (of 29) get picks in every week, the year before only one (of 31).

To me it's still a competition. That's all I'm saying.

That being said where is our MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL EXTRAVAGANZA update?!?

Completely unprompted, here is a MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL EXTRAVAGANZA update!!!!

10-3: Solkern (48), Bob (34)
9-4: Eschaton, Anebriated, Ardwen, Celephais, Brat, Drew, chillmonster (41)
8-5: Gallows Thief, Atlanteax, Sergey and Sean2 (rofl @ the rams), Bisco, Drinin
7-6: Alfster, Latrinsorm, Snapp, Tsa`ah, RichardCranium, Apathy, Augie
6-7: Silvanostar

Nobody with 9 picked the Jags except chillmonster, so it's just him, Solkern, and Bob unless (as usual) someone goes Sean2.

Wtf I didn't pick the rams.

That's the last time I use the OP shit. Bottom line is it's my fault but second to the bottom line is BULLLLLLSHIT! lol. 2 picks down the drain.

Eat penis.

When pulling a Sean2, should I edit my original post or post a new one (as in you've already got my original picks "timestamped" so messing with it now doesn't matter).

Your suggestion leads to absurd results. How do you not see that?

Umm ... absurd results I'm not seeing? LOL ... ok, missing 10-11 picks in a week bumping a percentage up 7 points isn't an absurd result?

Holy lack of statistical comprehension Batman.

I did the same thing, I picked the Ravens accidentally when I meant to select the Bills.

:medieval:Definitely make a new post because I usually don't bother to read through the whole thread again to see if someone changed their picks.
Umm ... absurd results I'm not seeing? LOL ... ok, missing 10-11 picks in a week bumping a percentage up 7 points isn't an absurd result?Drew's percentage only increases compared to the penalized percentage. The absurd result you're still not seeing is that your system makes me (below average % but heavy volume) a better picker than Sean2 (top 2 career %).
Holy lack of statistical comprehension Batman. The odd thing about this statement is I figured out what you were doing before you said it: "His late picks don't count as wrong picks, lol, they just count as no picks." Good try though! :)

You're certainly welcome to keep track of the "real" percentages if you so desire. My posts will continue to reflect a paradigm that doesn't result in ridiculousnessosity (which is the only word ridiculous enough to adequately reflect your proposed system).

Breaking news from Miami:

Miami, Fl (AP) -A seven-year old boy was at the center of Miami-Dade County courtroom drama today when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulation requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest degree possible. The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her.

When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried and said that they also beat him.

After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him. After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Miami Dolphins, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

I actually got the same EMail from my mother, with the Buffalo Bills in the EMail. She's a hater, because getting my father or I to do anything during Bills game day is impossible.

I think a good solution is that if you pick in a week then your total wins gets counted against the total number of games that week.

I.e. I don't just pick the Colts and Pat's every week to win.

Apathy

Colts and the Pats will be undefeated until they play each other; barring some huge mass-mental error which, if you've watched either team for like 2 minutes this year, probably isn't going to happen.

And yeah, GO PACK GO
