Eat a potato, raw, as a snack?

I am in the library (fucking weird as a 3L to be in the library, I know) and the guy across the table from me is eating a white idaho potato as if it were an apple. It's loud as fuck and, quite frankly, disgusting.

Anyone ever heard of (done?) this?

Bare ass nekkid = yeah.

But even a sprinkle of salt or modest boil = good to go, non-weirdly.

I don't eat them at the library I just lick them on them a little.

Yeah that's fucking weird.

How do you know he didn't bake it for dinner, had extra, and is eating it now?

It's weird, but I would do it if I had leftovers and were poor (not much of a stretch).

Uhhh, it crunches like he were chewing hard candy. I'm actually going to grab dinner now in hopes that he'll be gone when I get back.

Eating raw potatoes is okay if it's skinned. But with the skin on and eyes in - gross. Who knows where that shit's been.

Yeah I guess a baked potato wouldn't crunch like that even if put in a fridge for eating the next day. Ask him how it tastes.

Eating raw veggies can definately be odd but not totally uncommon. However I know folks who eat raw broccoli and the like. You gotta be a die-hard veggie lover for that though.

a lot of farmers eat raw potatoes, and I eat them occasionally in the kitchen.

Not too strange for me.

I've seen it more often in the south. A few people at work eat raw veggies. This one lady that worked with me ate tomatoes like that, sprinkled a little salt and had at.

Sure it's a potato and not like jicama?

We're only allowed to eat on the first floor of our law library...but we're even allowed to drink down there.

I used to eat corn off the stalk if that counts.

Most veggies are nice when they are raw. Broccoli is nice and swede is better raw than cooked, but Potato just tastes like dirt raw. Ugh.

I love broccoli and carrots and all that raw, but a potato? How long does it really take to stick it in the microwave?

I am totally shocked that people are saying eating veggies raw is weird. I do it all the time. Peppers, mushrooms, carrots, asparagus, tomatoes, string beans, squash, zucchini. Granted, I also make those things cooked at times, but plenty of times I snack on them raw.

However, I'm not a fan of raw potatoes.

I eat veggies raw when I am preparing them to cook.

I'm never hungry by the time I finished cooking :(

I like the way raw vegetables taste but they give me the worst indigestion.

Glad I'm not the only one! As for potatoes, I was told they were poisonous raw!?

Raw potatoes contain a toxin that makes them bitter and causes stomach pain and diarhea if you eat enough. Store bought potatoes contain less, but it's still enough to give you a stomach ache. I guess if you've been eating them long enough it doesn't affect you.

No, not poisionous. I've been eating them raw since i was a kid, sprinkle a little salt on them and they're good to go. I think the only other veggie i eat raw is carrots. I never could get into broccoli or tomatos. And i can't stand mushrooms cooked or raw.

OMG how can you not like tomatoes? I buy packets of cherry tomatoes and just eat them like that.

It's the texture, not the taste. same with mushrooms.

Raw mushrooms are yummy, especially the little itty bitty button ones! And garlic mushroom pizza is just to die for.

Look up glycoalkaloids.

Chill-lash is correct, potatoes contain small amounts of a glycoalkaloid. So do tomatoes and peppers. Generally these veggies don't contain enough to cause a risk, and commercially grown potatoes are screened to ensure it. DO NOT EAT POTATOES THAT APPEAR GREEN ON THE SKIN AND/OR FLESH. My mother used to warn me about this, explaining that potatoes are in the deadly nightshade family and the green is an indication that they've "turned poisonous".

The specific alkaloid you're looking for is solanine and here's the wiki-reference.

Potatoes that have turned green were just close to the surface of the soil and/or exposed to sunlight and generated chlorophyll on those spots, I thought.

Oh wait, I just read the link, and I was only half-right.

See, I was kind of right! Which also reminds me of something else I heard more recently, that you shouldn't eat broccoli once it starts turning yellow because that contains arsenic. Soon they'll be telling us that fruits and vegetables are bad for us.

I think I'll stick to chocolate

Is this where I shouldn't mention that most chocolate manufacturers are allowed a certain amount of rat feces in their process... by the FDA?
