I think in a society that has grown up by channel flipping and 7 second sound bits, the opening scenes are very important and a generally good indication for the rest of the movie.
My votes for favorite movie intros:
Belly
X-Men 2
Saving Private Ryan
I'll think of some more later...

It's not excactly an open scene, but the chase scene in the beginning of the newest Bond flick was pretty good.

Last bond opening was good. Too bad the entire movie was an action sequence.. was looking for more.
Saving Private Ryan scene great.
I'll have to search for Belly.. not sure wtf that is.

It's got DMX, Nas, Method Man among many others. Hype Williams made it.
For what it was, I liked it.
I liked the first 15 minutes of Equilibrium. (I liked the rest of the movie too). Gun fights = awesome.
The opening of Boondock Saints was pretty great, too.

The opening scene of State Property is pretty awesome, vis-a-vis the rest of the movie.

All the Star Wars movies
Kill Bill
Braveheart
All the Star Wars movies
This is a bit into it, but when Luke is on tationee (sp?) and is standing on the rock looking at the twin suns setting and french horn plays then the score swells, that's an enduring scene that really helped set the tone for the movie.
Youtube of it for the unwashed who don't know what I'm talking about:

28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later both had very memorable opening scenes to me.

Certainly not the best considering the caliber already mentioned, but Swordfish had an awesome opening scene... Gone in 60 seconds...
But yeah, Boondocks, New Bond, and and Saving Private Ryan have awesome opening scenes.
Just watched Heat recently this week... fuck all if that's not the best bank robbery scene in a movie... Dog day afternoon can't top that.

The original Star Wars, first time you see that and the size of that Star Destroyer just blows you away.
The Transporter, fantastic car chase first scene, and you get to learn the strictly business attitude of the transporter.

Whole reason I made the thread...am looking for some good movies to watch. Thinking about heading to the movie rental store and then making a thread on comic books.

For the win: Star Wars.
For the best: Bond.
For the cult:
We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like, "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive..." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about 100 miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?"
For the Throne: Gladiator.
For the slightly-longer-than-an-opening-but-still-beginning-ish-,-c'mon-now: 21 Grams.

:wtf: I can see plenty of dong without adding in horrifying biological zombies.. I actually liked how freaky the first one was with not knowing quite what was going to happen. The second one I enjoyed mostly in contrast to the first.. the intensity was there but it unfolded so differently.

Maybe because most women won't openly admit to purposefully seeing pen0r, or maybe it's because that made me sound like a whore.
OR, maybe it's both.

First two to pop in my head were X-Men 2 and the first Kill Bill. For the funny, I thought Not Another Teen Movie's first scene was hilarious.

Renaissance (from 2006) definitely had one of the best opening scenes I've ever seen. Then again, the whole movie was jaw-droppingly good.
Other movies... Pan's Labyrinth was awesome for setting the mood, same for 300, Transformers and Untold Scandal. 12 Angry Men, though that whole movie was flawless.
Definitely agree with Raiders of the Lost Ark. It doesn't get any better than that.

2001 and Jaws only because the music just hooks you right at the beginning.
Lord of war has a cool opening scene with the bullet
Dawn of the dead.. the zombie daughter
The cook, the Thief, His Wife and her Lover - freaky.
Memento is pretty neat at the beginning cause you are befuzzled as to wondering why it is going backwards.
Desperado - Buscemi telling the story just makes you chuckle.
Raiders of the lost Ark - no need to say more
8 1/2 buzzes you out right from the start.
Interview with a Vampire had a nice intro into the story
Running scared was decent as the first scene you see is a boy being carried is all bloody and Walker shouting Fuck fuck so you wonder what did happen.
last but not least, one my most favorite openings is A clockwork Orange.
Imagine how long all our lists would be if this thread was the best scenes ever than just openings. Damn, I watch too many movies!
